Agreed HBF but a tagger has to get 15-20 possies himself in the midfield these days a la Ling or Rawlings to a lesser extent hurting them both ways. AJ pretty much just negated ( Very well mind you on arguably the best player in the league ) I like him in the back pocket more - This young fella looks to be our tagging future.

I think you are being a bit harsh on AJ. In his second game he managed 16 disposals, whilst totally tagging Hooper out of the game & twice managed 19 disposals in games. He also had a 16 & 15 disposal game & 3 x 14 disposal games. Even when playing on Gary Ablett he had 12 disposals & kicked a goal (Ablett didn't match that goal).

Those numbers are pretty handy in a player's first season, particularly when playing purely as a tagger. The fact AJ claimed some big name scalps whilst still accumulating some good numbers, hopefully points to him being able to really hurt the opposition going the other way once he gets more experience under his belt.

Again like I said in the forward strucutre thread, no need to be too prescriptive and pigeon hole blokes in positions or roles,....horses for courses :thumbsu:, importnat point is we have options to negate opposition strengths, whether it be the pace and agility chasing of AJ or the bigger bodied physicality of Cach.

I believe Joseph is an excellent tagger on small forwards or midfielders (Milne, Williams, Abblett, Le Cras are the type), but to some degree is restricted by his size from being able to take on taller mids (Dal Santo, Corey, Goodes, Judd, Cooney in this case). This doesn't mean he cannot compete, merely he may be outmuscled and outmarked.

To this end Cachia seems a solution, he is 4cm taller and seems more than capable of putting on more muscle. Much like Davies who seems ready-made, these type of payers should be used as a crash and bash type (Ling) that hold opponents accountable with physicality as opposed to the quicker and more persistent Joseph, who restricts opponents through constant attention.

Of course both could progress into the midfield as fully-fledged on-ballers, Joseph seems to have quite the eye for the play and could be a very good off hands receiver. Cachia in the clips I have seen has played on-ball

Not if he's on Hawkins...

:D

AJ took some hangers or a hanger against Adelaide to show he's more than just a tagger.

I like our rookie picks, but I'll go he if Cachia gets a game ahead of Joseph, Browne and Grigg next year. Davies has to earn a spot to get a game ahead of Anderson who is still on the list. Yet they've already secured a spot in our best 22 if you read training reports and BF.

After just one month and one training session at Carlton.

Yarran played just six games in his first season...

Not saying Joseph has a weakness in marking, but if he was competing agianst say Jimmy Bartel he would more often than not be outmarked and out-sized. This is due to his slighter frame and height, not due to lack of ability. Having said that would love to see more hangers

Not saying Cachia should walk into the side next year either, he should compete for a place like all players and is probably coming from further back anyway. You'd think Grigg and Joseph would be looking to stitch up places this year and Browne would be in strong competition with Army and AJ (If he is played out of the midfield) for a back pocket

Pretty sure that's what I said.....or was getting at

I agree totally - I'm a big wrap for AJ - I simply think he's better suited on small forwards and is needed there by us more at the moment also.

It's great they we are talking seriously about another option though because we did need two AJ's at times last year in different parts of the ground.

Having followed the majority of Jaryd’s career and knowing him personally I can answer a few questions and end a few rumors running round here. When referring to Jaryd’s attitude problems, it’s not attitude but more his temper, whilst this caused him trouble in School football you must understand that the quality of umpiring was terrible and Jaryd was often victimized for his size and strength over his opposition. Hopefully being around professionals this temper will be a thing of the past. It has also being mentioned that he travelled to the UK on exchange in 2008, this was for a period of 3 months in the last term of school. He then missed a number of TAC games due to school commitments but when he did play TAC he was in the best almost every week, he averaged 25 touches and was ranked in the top 10 for clearances and contested possessions even though he missed 6 games. Not quite sure what someone was referring to earlier when they said he could have gone off the rails? Has always being very level headed and whilst he is certainly a larrikin he doesn't drink alcohol except for the very odd occasion. In terms of position he has always played midfield and rested up forward as he has a powerful mark and giant leap, this was until Pagen got him running off the HBF for Northern knights and this seemed to be a winning move as he dominated games streaming off the HBF with his booming long kick. From speaking to Jaryd there was no shortage of interest from other clubs and personally I still can't believe he wasn’t taken in the ND and think he will be one of the biggest steals of the draft. Good luck to him and Carlton next year

Sorry to disappoint you Uncle/Jaryd but the umpiring probably won't seem much more intelligible at AFL level.;) The trick is to keep one's cool and not to let a few bad decisions result in a dummy spit - something even senior players struggle with on occasion.

efa.

Do you think it would be possible to play Cachia, McLean and Hadley all in the same side?

Probably not C4.
The few times I have seen Cachia play for the Knights, he mainly played on the ball, so i'm not sure if he could play as a high HFF, with some real toughness and hardness at the ball.

What would be great on our HF line is Robbo on one flank, and Cachia on the other. Would add some real hardness there.

This is not me having a shot at you HBF, but I'm a little bemused at how a lot of Carlton supporters seem to have Mitch pencilled into our best 22.

Yes his hardness was first-rate last year (and I loved seeing it as much as any Blues man), but his disposal and decision-making were often ordinary, and I reckon if Jaryd turns up with the hardness that he's renowned for along with good decision-making and disposal he could quite possibly overtake Mitch in the pecking order.

Just my thoughts.

Didnt Mark Bairstow have his direct opponents win Norm Smith Medals in the 92 GF (Matera) and 94 Gf (Kemp)????

May be so but he was captain from 92 - 94, 4 time all Australian, played 7 state games and won a Sandover medal prior to joining Geelong
I think getting someone off the rookie list that could have similar achievments wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Entitled to your opinion JUB, but I reckon if you went through our mids disposal efficiency, you'd see that they consistently ran around the 70%-80% rate. I must say that I didn't notice Robbo's lack of efficiency, but anyone who will run into a pack head first has my vote.
