News Jeff Kennett criticises Paul Little, AFL and Eddie McGuire

Kennett directly attacked McGuire too, accusing him of being a member of the AFL "boys' club", a claim which McGuire refuted.

"It is a boys club, and people protect each other ... so many of them are connected not only in the commercial world but also their social world, and it is very much a club, and I sit on a number of commercial boards, and the rules that apply to commercial boards in terms of governance should apply to the AFL, and they don't.

"Unfortunately as we've seen the conditions become more choppy over the last three years, we've seen two incidents at the Adelaide Football Club, we've seen the incident at Melbourne over tanking, we've seen this more serious issue at Essendon and unfortunately the way this issue has been handled has led to this situation now where you've got claims being made now - he said she said, self-protection, self-interest - the thing that hasn't got top priority has been the interest of the game."

He just has to make a idiot of himself.

Because no one liked him in the AFL he has to have a Shot at everyone in the AFL.

Remember he stuffed up Victoria as Premier

I also wish Jeff was out of our lives, but I don't think he was completely off the mark with this one. There is definitely a boys club mentality in AFL circles, clubs or otherwise.

Dave, maybe change the thread title in case it upsets someone.

Meh he's allowed to voice his opinion just because it doesn't align with yours doesn't mean it's worthy of a roast.

You also have to bear in mind that as a former president he is privy to information that none of us will ever come across in our lifetime. Therefore if he's making those opinions public there's a fair chance they're accurate...

Well I do agree there is a Boy's Club in the AFL and AFL Media but just to have a Pot Shot like that was Weak as Water

I also couldn't disagree more strongly.

From reading the article he made the comments on McGuire's own radio show and to his face. There's nothing weak about throwing it in Eddie's face and getting it out there for public consumption.

Weak would be to run a smear campaign against those in the boys club behind their backs.

I thought it was a good article TD, and he is right to raise some of these issues.

The main thrust of the article was how poorly the AFL has behaved, and has been run, and I don't think anyone disagrees with him about that.

so says the self-proclaimed king of deregulation who paid private corporations to supply the public needs of Victorians and saw those companies skim off the profits. I dont know what universe Jeff has been living in, but all I see from companies run by commercial boards are companies chasing the buck. How many bankers took responsibility for the global financial crisis? He must be going through a stage in life. I dont want to personally criticise someone who has a history of mental illness. This guy is no longer an administrator in the AFL and the sooner newspapers stop going to him to get cheap headlines, the better.

I can't believe anyone still listens to anything Jeff has to say. Boys club? He'd know all about that selling off community assets like schools and hospitals
Just finishing what Kerner & Cain did.
They sold the banks then shut the tech schools. Oh that's right Labor revisionist history has Jeffery doing that. I guess it's true other than being completely false.

That's weird I was at a tech school during the Labor years...didn't get closed down until Jeff got into power. Just one more of his casualties.

Very weird, I went to High school during "the Guilty Gangs" reign of power & the Tech school shut down & joined us.

The state was broke, 32 billion in debt. Remember the State Bank of Victoria and Tricontinental and VEDC? - all had gone bust.

He just has to make a idiot of himself.

I agree with him.

Because no one liked him in the AFL he has to have a Shot at everyone in the AFL.

His club won a Premiership under him, which is more than most club presidents can say.

Remember he stuffed up Victoria as Premier

I'm a swinging voter and IMHO he's the best state premier this country has had. Victoria was a basket case under Cain / Kirner - hopelessly in debt. Kennett totally turned it around and made Victoria vibrant again.

So the Scotch College kid from the leafy inner east is accusing the CBC kid from Broadmeadows of being in a boys club? Eddie Maguire. one of the most unpopular figures in football, is in a boys club?

Am I reading this right?
Ed's only unpopular with the masses, he's quite tight with most of the club presidents, and if there is a "boys club" he would be a big part of it.

But this boys club shit is just that, utter shit. Men play the game, so of course the majority of people who officiate, administer and coach will be men as well, but that doesn't mean women in the industry are treated unfairly.

So you attack the most vulnerable in order to pay for it? Countless workers lost their jobs under kennett. It's ironic he became the boss of Beyond Blue...considering the amount of depression he caused during his reign. Maybe he's trying to make up for it now.

Don't forget the impact of Crown Casino.

What is the alternative?

Appreciate some people felt it was bad form to attack the vulnerable (closing down schools and hospitals) and spending money on extravagant items (Grand Prix).

But those extravagant items brought revenue and business to the state and paid for themselves many times over.

Nobody likes to see their school closed down, but the situation with some schools before was ridiculous. I can only reflect on the schools in my area - but they clearly hadn't kept track if demographic changes in the community.

Also remember Kennett built stuff too (despite the state being greatly in debt). He built Knox hospital. Next time you're driving along the south eastern freeway try to imagine having traffic lights at Toorak Rd, Tooronga Rd, and Bourke Rd - Kennett fixed that. Imagine what Melbourne would be like today without citylink? Or Southbank precinct? Or Docklands precinct? (Yeah, we might despise Etihad, but imagine the Victorian footy landscape without it)

Countless workers lost their jobs under kennett.

Are you suggesting the State should have continued to employ excessive levels of public servants it couldn't afford then and spiral further into debt? See Greece for a picture of what that looks like.

Sure, many lost their jobs. But the unemployment rate went down significantly under Kennett.

It's ironic he became the boss of Beyond Blue...considering the amount of depression he caused during his reign.

The mess was created by Cain / Kirner. Kennett was the one who was left to fix it.
