I think you need at least a week

A slap on the fine doesn't really cut it for me for something that shouldn't be an issue and is just stupid and ignorant that it still is today.

Lots of younger people will copycat this at local level if it's only a fine imo

And they won't if he gets games???

Has the usage of c*****r risen exponentially because Clarkson only got a fine and a suspended 2 game sentence?

Its optimistic to think that AFL sanctions are going to have more than a slight influence on younger, local people.

You can have a harder sentence the second time something happens though as a sign that the first penalty wasn't a deterrent to the community though

Its already painful enough watching players getting different sentences due to rule changes. Now you want to change sentences based in the impact a previous sentence has had on the community???

Fascinating to see how many people just don't get it. In contrast to racial abuse where I think some real progress has been made (although obviously not solved as a societal issue).

Speaks to the fact that we have a long, long way to go with this problem, especially in sport, and it will be a long time before we have any openly gay players.

I'd give Jez the benefit of the doubt as being someone who would suffer from Tourettes once he crossed the line and that's not a joke his body language is that of someone completely stressed.

He's done everything right post incident a fine that equals match payment and a suspended sentence move on.

A instant suspension? It's not on the level of calling an indigenous player a black campaigner. I'll accept it's in the ball park but just not on that level.

Lol. Big footy is one of the most toxic places on the internet. Yet all the self righteous SJWs who have said appalling things multiple times now are the experts on all things acceptable. Given me a break you hypocritical campaigners

It’s pretty straight forward, though.

You can call someone pretty much anything on the field as long as it’s not racist or homophobic.

If Finlayson had said “you’re a dumb c**t who sucks off donkeys” he’s not facing a fine/ban, is he?

It's a very interesting point. What would you rather be called. Someone who is gay or someone that enjoys a bit of beastiality

This ismt a high bump

It's bigoted and possibly even targeted slander (for all we know)

Don't try and pretend they're the same thing

The thing is, homophobic slurs are common swear words. What's next players cannot swear at each other? Should they hug instead of tackling? You cannot police people swearing

I would rightly get into trouble if, in anger, I called a work colleague a "stupid f***ing c**t".

The AFL has recently taken a stronger stance against abusive language directed by players to umpires. If they one day decide that abusive language directed by players to opponents no longer constitutes acceptable workplace conduct (and the football field is a workplace for players), we will survive.

Technically speaking, you aren't supposed to religiously vilify either.

Actually, I forgot about the Shaun Hart stuff in my previous post. The stuff said about him on this board would absolutely have you hauled before the AFL Integrity Unit if said on the field. On BigFooty, totally acceptable.

Just illustrates that different groups of people in different settings have different standards for what can and can't be said.

Exactly. How many people would be willing to change their profile to their real name for a while. I sure as hell wouldn't. The mutha F persona is a complete arseh*le I use to get out all the horrible suppressed side of my personality that comes from the frustration of being a 2024 supporter, or maybe a cheap laugh, or just to be a bit of a troll. Stuff I would never say in real life. Complete sociopath. He needs to go.

Yet all the self righteous SJWs
Sigh. Nobody on here is saying Jez is a bad person or needs cancelling or whatever else is going through your fox/sky news brain..
It's 2024. He used a word that denigrates a specific group. If it's based on race, sexuality, self identity or religion it's bad.
What part of that do you disagree with?

He'll get some sort of rap on the knuckles, the AFL sends a message that the game is for everyone and we all move on.

The fact is if some fkwit said something derogatory about his dying wife there'd be no public apology and headline.

What nonsense. Brett Montgomery was fined for sledging Adam Ramanauskas about his cancer in 2004. None of this has been acceptable for a very long time.

I genuinely don't remember, did the player who made the horrible comments about Kane Cornes' son back in the day get suspended?

I honestly think with the way the AFL leans into court of public opinion if a person had said something like this they probably would be penalised under "bringing the game into disrepute" but I'm not sure.

Doesn't make Jezza's use of a slur right either way though

Edit: I may be confusing the Cornes situation with the one above

Well I don't think this has happened because people know better than that, they know how repulsive and hurtful such a comment would be.

Hopefully one day we arrive at the same point with racism and homophobia.

Andrew Dillon was asked about it on The Footy Show, was quick to point out that Finlayson apologised immediately and was contrite. Said they would make a call during the week once the Integrity Unit has spoken to all involved.

I’m surprised the sticks slur was in Jeremy’s lexicon tbh. Like the p double o f slur it feels like something from 20 years ago.

Either way not appropriate. We should be well past using homophobic slurs to put someone down or challenge their masculinity. But he’s done the right thing afterwards and apologised so not much left to do but pay the fine and move on.

Hart boasted of actively proselytising in the workplace wherever he goes.

“I call it ‘throwing seeds’”

Whether someone said anything particularly bigoted regarding that is poor form, but it wasn’t a case of unsolicited mockery.

Its only been the last 10 years that people have got serious about policing this stuff at all.

Words like f*g and re**rd were being published in gaming magazines and sold to kids in the early 2000s.
