‘Til we meet again my superhero’: Rioli’s message to dad

West Coast’s Willie Rioli has led the tributes for his father, Willie Sr, after his sudden death on Tuesday. In a heartfelt Instagram post, the Eagles forward described his dad — a Northern Territory football legend and former South Fremantle player — as his “superhero” after he died, aged 50. “Go to your mum, dad and brothers and family my king,” he posted with a a heartbreak emoji and photo of the pair with the 2018 AFL premiership cup. “The last two years have been draining for all of us. “Now it’s your time to have a rest ‘til we meet again my superhero.” Willie Jr flew from Perth to the Tiwi Islands on Wednesday after being granted leave by the club to be with his family.
A 2018 West Coast premiership player, Willie Jr has featured in 10 games this season. The 27-year-old returned in round one after serving a two-year ban for tampering with urine samples. Willie Sr made a name for himself at the St Mary’s Football Club where he won four premierships and a Nichols Medal for the Northern Territory Football League’s best and fairest at just 16. He also played 48 games for South Fremantle between 1989 and 1994 and was drafted to Hawthorn in 1990. South Fremantle said in a statement they were “deeply saddened” by the tragic news. Willie Sr was one of 12 members of the Rioli family to play for the Bulldogs, including Richmond champion Maurice. and 2020 flag hero Ben.
“The South Fremantle Football Club is deeply saddened by the shock passing of former player and Tiwi Islands football legend Willie Rioli Sr,” the statement read. “Willie Sr was a quick and supremely skilled contributor to the team during a successful period,” the statement said. “Willie’s son, West Coast Eagles forward Willie Jr, represented South Fremantle at colts and reserves level and nephew Ben Rioli is a listed player currently. Our club offers its deepest sympathy to all members of the Rioli family.” West Coast said the Rioli family was an intrinsic part of the club.
“The coaches, players, staff and board are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Willie Sr,” the Eagles said, “Our club will do everything possible to support him. “We extend our love and condolences to Willie, his mother Georgina and the Rioli family.” In a statement on their Facebook page, St Mary’s Football Club said they sent their “deepest love, respect and condolences to the Rioli family on the passing of Willie Rioli Snr”.
“He was recognised as a big game player, winning the 1992 Australia Day Medal as the NTFL’s best player against Geelong and he was also named best on ground in the NT’s win over Essendon in 1990,” the statement read. “He had strong ties to NTFL clubs Waratah and the Tiwi Bombers, and of course the Imalu Tigers in the Tiwi Islands Football League through playing and coaching and we acknowledge the imprint he left on football in the Northern Territory. “An NTFL Player Life Member and NT Representative player, he was drafted by the Hawthorn Football Club in 1990 and also played with success for South Fremantle in the WAFL.
“To Georgina, Willie Jnr, Nikita, Kathleen, his grandchildren and all of the extended Rioli and Vigona family and friends we hold you in our thoughts during this sad time. Our hearts are breaking for you.” Tiwi Bombers Football Club, where Willie Snr coached for several years, described him as a great contributor to football in the Tiwi Islands. “The Tiwi Bombers FC is saddened by the loss of former player and coach Willie Rioli Snr,” the club posted on Facebook. “A great contributor for both the Tiwi Bombers and more recently the Tiwi Islands Football League.
“Our love goes out to the Rioli family and especially partner Georgina, children Nikita, Willie Jnr, Kathleen and grandchildren Martin and William Jnr.” Willie Sr’s former club Hawthorn also released a statement. “Hawthorn Football Club is saddened to learn the passing of Willie Rioli Sr,” the club posted. Rioli Sr joined Hawthorn with Pick 48 in the 1990 national draft. “Along with being a loving father and grandfather, Rioli Sr was also the uncle to four-time premiership Hawk Cyril Rioli,” the Hawks said. Older brother Maurice died of heart attack aged 53 in 2010.
