Melbourne Football Club Media Statement – Joel Smith

The Melbourne Football Club has been advised by the AFL that further Anti-Doping Rule Violations have been asserted against Joel Smith by Sport Integrity Australia.

The Melbourne Football Club is not authorised to make public comment while this is an ongoing matter that is being investigated by Sport Integrity Australia.

It should be noted since the article has been published on the Herald Sun website, Joel’s management has contacted the Club on his behalf to advise that the comments made by the source within the article are not reflective of Joel’s views and the source is not speaking on any authority from Joel.

Joel has made it very clear that he has no issues or concerns with anyone at the Melbourne Football Club.

As the Club has previously stated, we will wait for the investigation to be completed before we update our supporters further.

AFL STATEMENT – JOEL SMITH

The AFL confirms that further Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) have been asserted against Joel Smith of the Melbourne Football Club under the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code.

Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) has notified Smith that three ADRVs for “Trafficking or Attempted Trafficking” of Cocaine to third parties are asserted against him.

Under the Code, Trafficking in an anti-doping context is relevantly defined to be “Selling, giving, transporting, sending, delivering or distributing a Prohibited Substance, by an Athlete … to any third party [but] shall not include actions involving Prohibited Substances which are not prohibited in Out-of-Competition Testing unless the circumstances as a whole demonstrate such Prohibited Substances are not intended for genuine and legal therapeutic purposes or are intended to enhance sport performance” (Article 1 of the Code).

Further, SIA has notified Smith that an ADRV for Possession of a Prohibited Substance (Cocaine) on 9 September 2022 is asserted against him.

These ADRVs are in addition to that previously asserted against him (in connection with a sample provided by him after the match between Melbourne and Hawthorn on 20 August 2023 which tested positive to Cocaine and its metabolite, Benzoylecgonine).

Smith will continue to be provisionally suspended pending the finalisation of all of these matters, meaning he is not permitted to be part of Melbourne’s football program, including Melbourne’s pre-season training that is currently underway.

Under the Code, the new asserted ADRVs will be further investigated by SIA and these matters may ultimately be heard by an AFL Anti-Doping Tribunal in the coming months.

Due to the ongoing nature of the anti-doping process, the AFL and SIA are unable to make any further comment at this time.

Alright serious question here, but does this sort of bring into focus again the rumours around Simon Goodwin and his 'habits'?

I don't usually pay these thing too much attention, but with all the issues with Oliver this season, then May and Melksham last season, May being regularly pissed and seeming like a hot head, and now Smith testing positive for cocaine and Petty seeing if he can get out when they need him most - are these issues symptomatic of issues within the club?

I just have to ask the question, because since the 2021 flag where the Dees looked unstoppable, there's been speedhump after speedhump that's prevented them from getting back to where they should be - right at the very top.

They're a very good side at their best, but this stuff alongside even their reaction to the Maynard bump where publicly they said it had 'rattled them', just seems like a side that's all over the shop the last 2 seasons.

Hopefully all isolated incidents, but doesn't seem like a happy hunting ground at the Dees right now...

Its rots from the head unfortunately.

I wonder if your coach was in charge would any of these events have occured?

Tested positive after a game during the home and away season.

‘if its under the AFL policy they don’t name , under ASADA they name once test are positive , and after the game that’s between 2 and 4 years

If Smith tested positive during the season which is what I read, then it's a bit stupid and possibly a bit unlucky.
Plenty of AFL players doing drugs.

Club defo needs to pull the reins in a bit.

Unless he has some evidence it wasn’t deliberately used as a PED. But I don’t see how he escapes a multi year ban from what’s been made public so far. But you never know…..

Unfortunately for him Cocaine is considered a PED on match days

Reckon he will get it reduced to 3 months but probably take 12 months to get to that decision.
He’s dealing with WADA not the AFL mate otherwise it would have gone under the carpet

I legitimately do not know. I really can't tell if this is something culture wise, or just a bit of a bad luck in the last couple of seasons. My best guess at this stage is that Goodwin isn't exactly the most approachable 'relationship building' person, and that leaders of the club like Oliver, Viney, Lever and May seem a bit loose, so standards in general may have slipped.

Gawn and Petracca seem like very level-headed and easy-going people, but the aforementioned along with Goodwin, I dunno, it just seems like there's not as much standards being set as there were after the drop off in 2018 right up until your Premiership breakthrough in 2021.

It's all a bit odd.

Some of You Melbourne supporters need to take a good hard look at yourselves. Clearly content with 1 flag in over 60 years. Embarrassing

Until a few weeks ago Melb and Coll each had 2 flags in the last 60 years...

Am aware. From memory sam murray had the same "up to 4 years" but got to reduced to 12 or 18 months by proving it wasn't performance enhancing. Very similar circumstances with the match day test. Seems like 3 months is the new reduced penalty.

He missed both games, which they lost by a combined 9 points, kicking some of their lowest scores of the season. Collingwood and Carlton both fell over the line due to Melbourne having no decent tall forwards playing. So yes, likely cost Melbourne a premiership.
You’re just as delusional as your club, made for each other.

Yeah but wasn’t his backdated or something so 9f he was done immediately would have done the 2 years?

It may be counted as a PED, but as a performance enhancer in footy, it'd be pretty rubbish - hopefully gets a reduced ban

If I were a Melbourne fan, I'd be simultaneously pissed that a player was being so unprofessional late in the season when they're preparing for finals... and relieved that it's happened to a fringe player and not someone irreplaceable

This is god-tier Melbourne.
