Alright he is playing well in the SANFL not racking up the goals but competing and showing good signs, but i would like to see him at AFL level to see how he competes with the big boys because honestly i think he would vastly improve with better delivery :thumbsu:

But when is he going to get his first AFL gig all of the other top 10 picks from that draft have had there debut by Butcher hasn't so when will/should Matt give him a gig?

After the bye against North at AAMI is the right game to debut him.

Butch is the only KPP in the 2009 top 10. KPP's take longer to develop than smaller players.

Man I haven't heard or seen anything I just hope all the stuff written on here by posters about just ain't blown smoke

He seems to have all the right attributes to make it as an AFL key forward:

- 195cm tall.
- about 90kg.
- takes marks in a contest at U18 and SANFL level.
- very quick for a tall player (think Riewoldt or Franklin).
- good at tackling and applying defensive forward pressure.
- seems a good bloke... attitude wise.

CONS (like with many young players)
- who knows how the above will hold out at AFL level.
- who knows how his body will hold up to AFL.
- goal kicking needs work (similar to a young Tredders).

IMO he has 2 key X-factors that can make him stand out:

- speed: opposition defenders wont beat him on the lead.
- contested marking: the ability to take pack marks along with the above gives him a good combo.

Danger for him IMO is putting on too much bulk to the point it effects his speed and ground coverage.

What I don’t quite get
Is how tall is Salter again? And people were saying he is too short
And Oshea- who we refer to as a utility, is 193cm
Butcher is 195cm?
Is that meant to be a man-mountain?
Not . quite. Certain. What to make of this

Bloody Salter is the samn god damn size as Fevola, the 'fact' he is too short is a friggan myth!

Butcher is 197.

Salter is 190.

That's a significant difference without allowing for any arm span differences.

Height perhaps. Salter would need to eat Cam Hitchcock to be the same size as Fev.

Now there's an idea...

I have no idea what just happened.

But yes, Butcher is 197cm. He's got a decent frame to build on, not gigantic tank bruiser ala Tredrea, but he's athletic and strong. Very fast, very good in the air and when the ball hits the deck.

It's mainly positioning and little things like that where the work will be. Will be a dominant player for us in the future. Excellent hands.

Nick 'Perfect' Cellter
(i'll get my coat)

If Butcher comes in before or instead of Salter would that spell the end of the Salt man at Port? In the forward line at least?

Can't help but think Primus likes his Hoff and Schulz plan.

1st thanks for confirming Butcher's height (I was going off my dodgy memory).

IMO Salter would still have a role to play, but someone on BF has mentioned Crows want him.

Even with Butcher I could see Port using Schulz as a lead up CHF type, Salter from FF and Butcher in FP (with license to roam). Westhoff is then freed from too much KPP expectation and can play as a ruck rover.

damn if salts wasnt injured i think he wouldve played bulk games this year.

i think going forward there is definately a place for salts in the team. one of shultz or butch close to goals the other lead up. ild like to see a 3rd tall of moore/ salter. hoff will start at hff but just run where-ever up into the midfield anyway. no motlop in the f50 next year. both of moore and salter can go forward or back ( mid for moore maybe?). that leaves us with 2 smalls, gray and one of phillips/ irons/ hitchcock. either of moore and salts whichever is up there will give us that 3rd marking target but also run and chase. then the onus is on danny stewert to push someone out with his form or to step up when someone is out with an injury/ suspension.

at 197cms butcher is a big kid. has very sticky hands as well. from what ive heard seems to have long breaks without much happening then can make alot happen quickly out of not much opportunity. thats very very common of forwards because of the midfield supply but players like riewoldt and franklin get over it with a massive workrate.. so that would be one area he could probably improve in. considering he has only had one pre-season the should be alot of room to improve still to come.. exciting.

salter at 190cms but has a big big body. nice leap and a big kick too. is more of a lead run and jump than stand under it player from what ive seen. honestly im all for next season motlop and ebert out and this guy in. is only 23ish i think??

I thought the coaching staff made it pretty clear last year that salter isnt a key forward and wouldnt be played as one.Not gonna happen

we can only hope and pray that one of the afl conditions is that we get rid of some of the dills we've been forced to keep there at the club- ie Rodhe etc

Yeah, I think the club has made it pretty clear that they won't consider Salts for selection as a fwd.
Still, Schulz is good, and while not a gun forward, if Butch steps up to be a superstar, Schulz could be one of the best 2nd tall options going around. Add to this Gray and Phillips scrapping and the push fwd of Westy from a wing, and we've got a dangerous fwd line developing IMO.

We need to play Salter forward.

What everyone is forgetting is that Schulz ain't too handy unless he's the first option up forward. That's what happened at Richmond - he was terrible playing in Richo's shadow. When Tredrea was in the team, he wasn't going amazingly and he even got dropped. He had people calling for him to be dropped on this board. When Tredrea went down, Schulz stepped up.

Basically, Salter can play as a second leading forward. He'll fit with Butcher a whole lot better and our club are a pack of idiots if they can't see this.

^^ good points about Schulz... needs to prove he can deliver alongside others.

No mention of Butch in the Power's SANFL report. From what I've read earlier he didn't have a real impact on ground or on the scoreboard, are Port trying to only give out positive news on this guy? I'd like to hear all things related to his development considering he seems to be shaping up as a key to our structure in the future.
