Ok know this is a bump but,

Butcher should be getting a debut sooner rather than later

Shown that he can make a contest at SANFL level and does it well
Will learn off quality backman that he plays on if he is are 2/3 target up forward (like Hartlett, O'Shea, Pittard have been doing)

All of the other Modern "Young Gun Forwards" had debuted by this stage in there Career.

Jack Riewoldt Picked 13 in 2006 draft debut May 2007

Micheal Hurley picked 5 2008 draft debut April 2009

Lance Franklin pick 5 2004 debut round one 2005

(Not a gun but a highly rated youngster) Scott Gumbleton pick 2 early 2007

I mean c'mon Matt, what do we have to lose giving him 5+ games giving him confidence going into season 2012 where he should play 15+ games for us

Id liek to see this.
itd be gd to give Butcher a taste of whats required at AFL level, things to develop in the preseason.
he is a long term great forward hope

Not ideal conditions for it up in the wet conditions for a marking forward, but if he's got some run and workrate about him could cause as much havoc as an on song Daniel Motlop. Just the surprise/unknown factor would have more impact than Daniel Stewart on current form.

6 more weeks of the season left!
Will johnny butcher be able to crack into the power side?
I really doubt it at this stage

We should wait until after our bye and debut him in the showdown against Adelaide.

Then he has 3 AAMI games, 1 MCG and 1 Ethiad.

Too logical. We won't pick him this year cos we'll play Ebert and Motlop ahead of him, then when he wants out to a Melbourne club in the off season, we'll say 'we only want players who want to play for us' and we'll trade him for a second round draft pick.

You know it'll happen.

Would love to see him debut against Collingwood, even more so if that turns out to be the unofficial Brogan & Chad 'farewell concert'. Its not throwing him to the wolves. For a young player with so so much expectation on him, to make a start when champs you watched as a kid are retiring may give him some sense that his future is here with our new group.

You're absolutely correct. He is not ready for the big league yet.
It would be far better for him and the club to let him play at the Maggies and then get a complete pre-season into him.
He will make it if we are patient.

If he wants to stay.

Do you honestly believe that?? Load of crap. Easy for the media to kick a team when its down. Ill be surprised if we loose anyone.
Earning potential would be higher at port than anywhere else. We have a list of ordinary footballers so if you're just slightly better than average you'll get a good contract at port, their managers will know that.
Also good luck to any melbourne kids wanting to go home this year with the bottom half of the ladder stacked with non vic teams and GWS coming in.

Need to play butcher as soon as possible and see if he is any good. if not get rid of him, we cant hang on too long if he is no good. From what ive seen in the SANFL he isnt up to it, not sure hif he has ever racked up more than 10 possies in any game.

No offence, but lolle.

He's a 19yo key forward. He was never going to come in and dominate immediately and it's frankly ridiculous to think he would. He played some solid games at SANFL level pre injury and he's back in the league side now.

He'll get there and at the very least will be a solid, servicable AFL forward. Absolutely no doubt about it.

he's from Melbourne
like trengove
trade bypasses being picked up in draft by the non victorian/gws teams
and how is earning potential higher? we already paying the minimum TPP

yes we can
we dont hv a long line of forwards to develop'
and he's coming back from an injury that helped, in part, drop his draft stock.
so we do need to put time in him
and hope he stays and develops

/\ what he said - I was shaking my head at 'play him or get rid of him'! If all clubs work like that no-one would have any youth to bring in!

More money for average footballers because we don't have the stars that command high salaries.
Im sure we wouldn't trade him and You can't go into a draft say you will only play for a Vic club. GWS would vet him with one of their 1000 draft picks. He ain't going no where.

would warren tredrea have been better off spending more time in the sanfl or getting right into it?
why did we bring oshea pittard jacobs moore and irons in but not banner or butcher?
now lobbe is in do we think he is better for the games he's had or would he have developed better in the sanfl over the last three weeks?

summary: play him, and play him now.

Just had the yips... It's his second game back from injury. Great positioning, great marking, great pack crashing, some slick handballs and excellent second efforts. His goalkicking was definitely a low point, but look at Travis Cloke. He'll get there.

Bernie every time I see him play he has the yips. If he can't iron out his kicking issues he's not going to deliver what we need and want. Cloke sprays them but I would still say he has a very attractive kicking style and a penetrating long kick, unlike Butch who is as awkward as a cow on skates when lining up for goals.

His kicking style kind of makes me think he's putting pressure on himself thinking "I have to get this goal" and not "I want to get this goal" so he's hilariously over kicking the ball and spraying it at right angles.
