Coach John Longmire - Part IV has resigned

Sometimes what a club needs and what a player wants are not aligned.
Parker is one of the greatest Swans ever.
The Club, is the greatest club ever(IMO), needs to build a list for this year and for the future.

Sometimes coaches have to make tough decisions. I speak to Jesse White's dad occasionally and his opinion is that Horse has to make tough decisions. He has his favourites like all coaches. You can have a players opinion or you can have a clubs opinion, and your opinion may change with a players selection or non selection etc. He is fairly philosophical.

I reckon if a coach has been around as long as Horse and has been relatively successful, then your comment "It seems like Horse is a real shocking bloke" is a bit reactionary rather than based upon fact.
Apparently Josh Kennedy got treated badly too. Kieran Jack may well have, as well, but I'm not 100% sure about him.
Anyway, it's going to make it harder to sign the likes of Chad Warner to a long term deal when he sees the way that Luke Parker and Josh Kennedy were treated in their thirties. Kieran Jack works for West Coast so he'll be trying to get him back to WA.
Unfortunately, Parker and Longmire live in the same street and so they'll be running into each other when LP returns to Sydney.

I call bullshit on Longmire ignoring Parker, there's footage and photos for a start, you think if Longmire actually ignored club greats at the end it wouldn't have come out on some podcast etc by now .

Kennedy on that backchat podcast or whatever spoke about horse talking him through his last year and helping him to try and get back for a start.

People just looking for something other than Parker left because he cracked the sads the second he wasn't an instant pick in the side and couldn't leave quick enough. This club mistreated him line is crap he was paid highly for years to stay, his last contract was always too long and he showed in the finals he is basically done .

Worry about all the shit that's been going on at your club , rats like Lethlean and the way he treated people , absolute basket case of a club

I know somebody who is a close family member (of Luke Parker) and your summation is 100% correct. It seems like Horse is a real shocking bloke. It's very poor show to treat a player like him like that. He had always wanted to be a one club player too.
I think those issues are going to happen regardless of who is head coach. There are always going to be players upset they are not getting games or players who will be delisted or traded out. And they are still going to be upset about it even if there is good internal communication over decisions.

As fans we have always have opinions of how we would have done things differently with team selection and squad management. I would have probably tried to rotate the squad a bit more. But I am not under that pressure of being a head coach needing to win each game.

I like to observe body language and the only player I can recall Horse having real negative body language towards was Tom Mitchell. You could cut the air with a knife. Still selected him though. There are a few he has been a bit awkward with, Dyl Stephens was one. Horse wouldn't touch him. He would be hugging around, get to Dyl and back off. Looked to me as if Dyl may have reacted negatively at some point. You can see that he is closer to some players than others but I couldn't see any friction except Parker. Nothing fierce but Parker was cold and emanating FO vibes and Horse appeared to be doing as requested.

I've heard from people close to players over the years that Longmire can have a pretty negative/critical streak against certain players if he's not a fan or if they aren't serving him that well.

I don't think that equates to being a "shocking bloke" - he's been around for too long for people to feel that way, they would have turfed him way before then if that were actually true. And I suspect Longmire is probably about as critical as other head coaches have been over the years. Based on what I've been told for some time, the club had to counsel Longmire to be more positive or less critical of certain players and to his credit he went away and did it and the club had sustained success in his tenure.

You can't make everyone love you. Especially when you manage others there will be people who just don't like you.

SAF was super critical all the time, but also well loved. Great Evra quote I saw recently, said the players performed because they were scared of SAF more than the result and when Moyes came in he couldn't instill the same fear in them.

Horse was there to win, he clearly got a lot out of his players. I'm not going to read into the ones who complain when they stopped performing they didn't get praised anymore. It's like when Grey came out and said he never got the love, he never performed either.

I was thinking about Sam Gray. He was brought to the club because we expected to be in a longer rebuild. But our young players were emerging quicker than expected and then giving them games was going to be the priority.

So whatever he worked on in the reserves and however well he played, it was obvious he did not have much of a future. So from his perspective, he is trying to get feedback on what he needs to do to get a senior opportunity. But he just wasn't in the club's plans.

I feel Parker was probably going to be in that situation. Where we would prioritise Mills, Heeney, Warner, Rowbottom and maybe Sheldrick in midfield. And then look to bring in some quicker players in our forward line.

Parker was a great warrior for us but there was no way we were giving him a 3 year extension. With his last 4 year deal with us, we rewarded his great service. Happy for him to get another 3 years elsewhere. He hasn't bagged us and he's a level headed guy. Not a big drama.

I've heard similar things. I think he is not without flaws and maybe not the outstanding people-manager that his reputation suggests he is. (Which is not to say he's not still good at it - clearly many players like him and like playing for him, which is more than most coaches can say for themselves.)

FWIW it was told to me that the quarantine hub during the COVID year of 2020 was a turning point for Horse. He got to know his players better than he'd ever got to and saw the young & energetic but big personalities that were on his list and would be part of the team going forward. He pivoted hard towards trying to embrace them and let them be themselves to try and get the best out of them, and that is good coaching. But he might've pivoted too hard; those players - and I don't need to name names, it's not hard to figure out who they are - became his favourites, but also his focus. He was described as trying to be the "cool dad" to that particular cohort but being "detached" and "unavailable" to many outside it.

If true - which I believe it is; I trust my sources, but others don't have to - it sounds like a coach simply trying to evolve for the good of the team, but maybe moving away from some of the fundamentals that made him loved in the process. Not that he is just a "real shocking bloke."

I'm sorry for trying to give you the inside word. You go with when Luke Parker finishes his lease in Brighton (Melbourne) and completes the two property development in Bali and returns to Sydney (he lives in the same street as Horse) that they will be best mates. Because you would know 😂😂😂!!!

I know you've been missing for years and no wonder

I happened to catch up with a Swans insider last night and disappointingly I can confirm that in his words "Horse treated Parker abysmally in the latter part of the season".

He gave one example of Luke's sister, her husband and their toddler daughter flying up to watch the Prelim Final at the SCG.
They were attending the training the day before the match and Horse noticed them on the boundary.
He apparently went over to them, grabbed the toddler's ice cream cone, took a lick of it, then threw it down and stamped it into the ground.
He then bent down to face the little girl who was bawling her eyes out, yelled loser at her and walked away giving the finger to the parents.

Shocking, shocking person.

Is it any wonder that the players deliberately tank Grand Finals just to get rid of him?

Bradman used to pull that kind of crap all the time as well. Two peas in a pod those two.

The only time i have heard a player speak negative of Longmire was Sam Gray and Lewis Taylor.

Both players on the outer edge of our best 22 at the time they both expressed lack of feedback and direction from the coaches.
