My take - Longmires time as Swans coach was done. He saw the road ahead - a lot to loose and not much to gain except a GF win. and he knew it wasn't his voice that would get the.Swans there.
He will spend a year on the sides and than go again - in Melbourne as 1st preference and maybe even the demons.

A vwy good H & A coach but after 24 compounded 22 the club had no choice but to make a move and ever gracefully they did.

It does seem like there are players who end up "on the outer" with Horse. And there are others that seem to be able to endure long patches of questionable form without getting dropped.

I think there's probably enough smoke not to dismiss there having been fires.

ROK, Newman, Aliir, Gray, Parker, even Hewett to some extent though that may not have been Horse-driven.

I don't necessarily have an issue with some of these being seen as surplus to requirements (some I do), but it does sound like Horse then gives them the cold shoulder.
Hewett was definitely Horse driven. He wanted him out. They had fallen out apparently over his use of Hewett as a tagger. Hewett believed he was far better than that. He was right & Horse was wrong. Horse refused to play him because they were at odds. Then he played him as a pure mid & he accumulated over 30. Then he dropped him

I definitely think Horse did not use Hewett correctly, but this version of events does not seem accurate.

Horse never refused to play Hewett and he never dropped him. Hewett was selected by Horse literally every week that he was fit & available from the time he debuted in 2016 & to his very last game for the club in 2021. It got to a point where Horse was trying to fit Hewett into roles he was average at best in (such as half back flank) just to keep him in the team.

It seemed to me like Hewett was a favourite of Horse's because he was dependable, disciplined and relatively versatile. He just did not seem to rate Hewett as a ball-winning clearance mid. Or if he did, he rated him as a tagger too much to entertain the alternative. As I said, either way I don't agree with how Horse used him.

I just don't think there was this beef between coach & player that you seem to be alluding to.

Yep this is pretty much how I saw it too. The club HAD to be shown to do something, but Longmire was far too good a coach and too well respected (and also simply didn't deserve) to be sacked, so this was by far the best way to take positive action without smearing his magnificent record.

I believe he'll coach again, but I'm with the journo in the article, surely it's Tassie. I couldn't think of a better man to lead the Devils through their formative years.

See I'm the opposite, I just can't see Horse putting himself through Tassie when there are other coaches under huge question marks. I look at Voss from Carlton, if they don't really contend and I mean really contend, do they make the harsh call? Could they bring in Horse to actually get them to a GF? Essendon possibly though I'd have that as unlikely would just be going to another rebuild side.

Just what if he doesn't want to , a friend told me he likes the admin bit and that also allows him more freedom to say spend more time on the Murray with his new home and houseboat.

You couldn't blame him he's had a fantastic career as a player and now as a coach. People forget it's not just the years as a coach, add the playing time and it's near on 35 years in the game. He might just be done and wants to step back do some admin stuff and spend more time with his kids and family and no one could say that's wrong.

I see what your saying and that wouldn't surprise me, but the pressure on going to a huge club like Carlton would be enormous, maybe not so much with clubs like the Dee's or Dogs, but he'd still be in the thick of media speculation and there would be the immediate GF pressure back on him and imagine the meltdowns if he took over ANY other team and they failed miserably in the GF? That would destroy his legacy forever.
There would be no such expectations of him in Tassie, they just need a good, nurturing coach to lead them through the first hard years and keep them motivated - something I think Longmire would be incredible at.
Timing would be great too, he may have had enough of the easy life by the time he'd be needed in Tassie.

My view is he's more than likely to either not do anything, which he might and it's probably the favourite, a cushy admin job in sydney with more family time would be very attractable.

Alternatively he looks for a second flag at a big club in Melbourne and Carlton jumps out like nothing before. If they don't make the top 4, watch them come knocking it makes too much sense.

I also see Fagan going to Tassie to be honest with a caretaker taking the first year or so like GWS did.

Well time will tell I guess.
We are probably both wrong and he goes to Perth or something and coaches WC 🤣

I think they would absolutely cream their jeans if they can get a Tasmanian to be the first coach .

I’m in the belief that Horse might not coach again, as he really has nothing to prove, it’s over and he can’t change the results of the grand finals . Was never his greatest fan , but then he went out with dignity.

I wouldn't be surprised if we look after him in the future almost to try and prevent him from going back into coaching and bringing some other club success.

It is one thing to think he is not the right guy to coach our team but I know for damn sure I want as few coaches of Horse's caliber in the competition as possible LOL.

Nah. Let him go and hope we meet his mob in the GF
