Jordon Sweet’s VFL stats from round 5 till the second week of finals. Huge amount of consistency, last 6 weeks of the year really stand out. Round 18 being the big one. Unfortunately he’s not the marking type of ruck but more of that Nank type inside tackling, disposals, consistency by hitting the score board so can easily rest forward and rotate with Finnlayson so flexibility too.

I was really hesitant on this as a trade until I saw these numbers, really optimistic that it’s a significant improvement on our current situation and realistically he helps the way we play a contested game. The pure number of contests he’s able to get to proves he’s got the tank the take a 80-90% ruck time which is exactly what we need imo

Flynn, O'Brien, Briggs, Sam Jacobs, Nankervis, Darcy Cameron - there's examples of rucks who spent the first several years in the system with little to no exposure to AFL football who were able to break into a side and perform to a solid level.

The latter three in particular are guys who struggled for opportunity at their first club only to become more than solid when given opportunity at another club.
I saw RO’B at Alberton a few years ago playing for the crow’s 2’s and thought WTF. This guy is good, so what’s he doing in the 2’s as he was displaying everything a top grade ruckman was suppose to show. No argument, GET SWEET
edit, perhaps ROB had Jacobs in front of him!

Was listening to 3AW pre-match and a Bulldogs supporter rang in saying Sweet is now an elite ruckman and likened him to Patty Dangerfield in his ability to run and bounce and fend players off! We have to get something good for him!

Leigh Matthews said a 4th round pick. Matthew Lloyd said you've picked him for 11 games, you'd be lucky to get a third rounder.

It would be nice if ruckmen could still mark.

Lol yeah right?

I came up watching football when the league was absolutely stuffed with 2m tall blokes who could ruck, and I mean when rucking was two blokes really running and jumping into each other … then take marks around the ground.

The “they need to be mids brigade” ****ing killed the position.

95% of rucks you do not want getting possession of the ball around stoppages anyway. It just stops your actual good ball users from getting the ball.

The afl just started to work out recently that clearances are about quality, not quantity (butters and rozee are great examples of this, far lower clr numbers than players for us in the past but far higher quality)

Give me a ruck who can tap the ball to good mids and then mark around the ground over an extra mid every day of the week.

I grew up watching Russell Johnston go against Mick Redden and Peter Carey in the 80s. I remember them all dropping back behind the ball to take good pack marks.

Russell was the first elite ruckman we had since I can remember , we had Kieth Spencer , Kevin ? Salmon , Leon Milde , Paul Marret , John Spry was adequate for a few years , Robert Dolan rucked in a premiership year Chris Natt , David Hynes who was more of a second ruck but Johnston was the real deal

Correct, exactly what I said yesterday Tim English is one of the best ruckman in the league but I didn’t see many clubs chasing Jordan Sweet in the last 5 years. Hope I am completely wrong

Most ruckman don’t show much at all in their first 3-4 years in the league.

They wouldn’t have been chasing him until mid this year if ever anyway. He finally broke out at 25 and improved significantly this year.

Whether that will translate to the AFL is an unknown but given the evidence of late blossoming rucks over the past 30 years, it would be much more likely he’ll be a decent player now at 25 than he would’ve been at 22.

It’s a good situation for us. We are cashing in at what looks like the beginning of his peak, while he has no trade value and is stuck behind the best ruck in the comp.

It’s a low risk, high reward move for us.

Yeah old Sambo Salmon and Spencer was mid 60’s old style ruckman.
Leon Milde would be the worst kick of a football I’ve ever seen, could easily miss a goal from 10 metres out.

Lloyd Zucker was (very) handy.

Brought back some memories there. Russell Johnston being a Collingwood cast off.
