Traded Josh Battle - Joins Hawthorn as UFA

A Saints true ITK has reported that Hawthorns offer is front loaded.

Band 1 compensation is based on the first 5 years, so with Battle be 6 year deal, that would make Band 1 more likely now.

Another good source also believes it is Band 1.

We will know Friday.
Battles manager wouldn’t tell the saints how the Hawks contract is made up, that’s not how player managers work. The saints may have an idea based on what they offered him and potentially also what he requested from them, but won’t know what the hawks actually put up.

Bring unrestricted you get the compensation straight away? Or still have to wait it out?

On Pixel 7 using BigFooty.com mobile app

Usually once the paperwork is filed the compensation comes through pretty quickly, the Bombers filed McKay on the same morning we got the compo at about 10.30am. However, this was on the Tuesday after the free agency window opened, they just took their time logging it.

Their calculation takes the contract average over the period. And it's not based on the first 5 years only - the new rule they brought in around 5 years relates to limiting the benefit you get for longer term contracts. 5 years is viewed the same as 10 years in determining compo.

It'll only take into consideration the five years. It'll cap out at the fifth year of that contract, that'll be the maximum contribution. Again, the key determination will be the average guaranteed earnings of that deal."

I think what the Saints guys are thinking is if the Hawks front load Battle then if he was being paid over 6 years, the last year would likely be where he gets paid the least so the first five years would have a higher average wage. It's an interesting theory but I'm sure the AFL will look at the total dollars being paid. Otherwise if this was flipped and the Hawks were massively back-ending the deal than the Saints would suffer with a worse band of compo.

But that doesn't work, because they average the life of the contract, not just the first 5 years.

Band 1 can be end of first round

Can be for whoever the afl deems it be

They will say band 1 compo and give them end of 1

From the North board (I believe afl.com)

CLUBS GET CLARITY ON COMPO

ST KILDA and Greater Western Sydney are among the clubs breathing a sigh of relief, after the AFL informed teams that 'Band 2' compensation picks will fall before North Melbourne's pair of end-of-first round selections.

Herald Sun (Jon Ralph and Jay Clark) running with the below on Battles contract.

The AFL’s free agency period kicks off on Friday, with compensation for St Kilda over Josh Battle’s departure the most intriguing question mark given a six-year Hawks offer of just under $900,000 a season.

Sounds like band 2 based on the president chucking a hissy fit about draft compo and equalisation. Weird timing to pot the league that’s about to give you a leg up with a top 10 pick if that weren’t the case.
😂

Has nothing to do with Battle.

You get access to Kako. We got no access to Cmac who went pick 7.

The lions who win the flag get the best kid in the draft.

It’s an endless list.

It’s also not a new thing. He has been going after the league for 18 months on this topic.

But nice try.

You’re being conditioned Stavros. Put down the cool-aid

Finished 3rd in the B&F but had his invitation revoked and then no video of his season highlights like the others on the podium?

Lots of salt there.

Sounds awfully like he was made to feel like he wasn’t welcome.
