Traded Josh Battle - Joins Hawthorn as UFA

Why would you give a shit if St Kilda get Band 1 or not. A weird flex or thing to concern yourself with

In the end they will get Band 1 whether you, me or Taylor Swift like it or not. Its just how this ones going to work out. Wont make it a bad deal for Hawthorn cos AFL gave them something more....
Pushes our pick back

Hence the giving a shit

If Josh Battle garners band 1 compensation, FA compensation should be scrapped.

If he is getting band 1 compensation then we really do have a problem

oh no just when things couldnt get worse yoda is back,my goodness,he must have spent the whole off season on the saints board last year, convincing us shiel was a great get for our compensation pick for gresham, then when it didnt happen he disappeared like a fart in the wind

You literally triggered band 1 for a key defender who struggled to handball on Friday night.

And you have an issue with Hawthorn paying Battle 😂

hand balling isn't his job my friend

stopping his opponent, occasionally taking a mark is his job. you listen to David King too much. Try listening to Luke Hodge some more

No. Hand balling is part of his job. Especially if it results in a turn over that leads to a goal

When it leads to opposition scores. It most definitely is his job.

I’m all for tribalism. But stupidity and whinging from oppo supporters who’s club literally did 12 months ago what the hawks want to do now is something else.

That's why McKay shouldn't have been band 1, he is no May and Essendon was stupid to offer him that much, hopefully the Hawks learn from them.

I would hazard a guess that Batle is no where near the top 10, if not 20 half backs in he competition yet will be paid as one if this went through.

As for Essendon, duly noted, we overpaid on a guy who was one of the very select few good to decent free agents available at the time in a niche position we needed filling. Check some of the AA threads on the main board and a few threads across BF, he was talked about as one of the recruits of the year until not just he, but the wider EFC shit the bed

I agree McKay should not have been band 1 but the interesting thing is that for the rest of his contract he wont be paid as a band 1 free agent.

And this year he is like the highest paid player in the AFL haha. YAY Salary cap space!

Congrats. What a huge accomplishment for your club.

I never denied that Saints get smaller crowds. Just highlighting that choosing to go to Hawthorn is choosing to play in front of smaller crowds given your games in Tassie.

The Hawks Tassie agreement ends next year FWIW. Hawthorn’s average at the MCG this season is 61,000 (with games against Carlton and Richmond to come), last year as a bottom 4 team the MCG average was 54,000 (from 9 games).

So as well as winning a lot more silverware (12 flags since the 3/4 time of the 1971 Grand Final) it is factually correct to say they play in a whole lot more big games even with Tasmania.

As Kane Cornes said on the Footy Show last week, the AFL have absolutely dudded Hawthorn with the draw but they are very much box office. Round 1 against Essendon, Easter Monday against the Cats and now a growing grudge match against the Pies (which Hawthorn always win)

The reality is the Saints are a tiny, objectively rubbish football club. I'm not sure that makes Battle a coward to be honest, it probably makes him a hero for wasting half his career there :drunk:

And if Battle was to be traded for he wouldn’t get a top 10 pick. Every stkilda fan knows that.

No one is arguing different. He is a good not great player in this league.

But like Essendon, Hawthorn have an abundance of cap space and a player who fits a need and improves the rest of their 22 on match day.

Whether he is worth 900k is irrelevant. Which is the entire point you are all missing.

It will take an offer that high to get the player to move. That’s not stkilda bias, that’s just a fact about free agency. Players get and take overs to move clubs.

He has an offer on the table that sits at 850/6 years from the saints. That’s what needs to be beaten to get him to exercise his unrestricted free agency status and move.

His age and contract length will more than cover any doubt about his guaranteed salary not generating band 1 status - but it will probably be close on its own.

There is talk Perryman will generate band 1 for the giants now. Similar boat. Not worth it.

But this is the game and when the shoe is on the other foot - Essendon landing McKay or Adelaide offering a fortune to anyone who will come, I can guarantee there wasn’t a peep from either of you.

Perryman is reportedly $850K for 6 years so that isn't band 1. We only offered a fortune to Gulden.

Agree, with the new CBA his contract wouldn't have been worth band 1 this year but at least he is a 202cm KPD unlike Battle.

I feel like getting a pretty good defender in via FA is worth losing one spot in the draft. It's not like you're desperately in need of high draft picks anyway, or at least that's what I'm led to believe by Hawthorn fans.

I’d say the assumption is that clubs will up their offer.

You know… like how they did for McKay last year.
Which is why I said at least McKay is a 202cm KPD so it's no surprise they get paid overs. Also, $850K this year isn't that much given the significant increase in CBA. This is equivalent to $750K next year so his contract isn't even at the top end of players, arguably Essendon didn't overpay for him.
