The way our young Daicos is being described we are about to see the emergence of AA level talent.

Let’s see how he does before we go into over drive.

Im hoping for a good game.

Yes. Only played a dozen games, first senior outing for the season, expectations should be modest. Hopefully he does some good things and we get to see him at AFL a few more times this season.

What are you basing this on? You know he’s played midfield all year in the VFL right?

I’m leaning towards Kappa’s POV if I’m being honest.

Like Brown I just don’t see him forcing his way into our midfield in any significant capacity. For mine he’s like a Josh Smith without the tank, but with more daring ball use. The problem with that is as a mid he isn’t quick enough to be mostly outside, not physical enough to be inside and not defensive enough to be a run with type. He’s somewhat limited as a mid at senior level.

As a HHF though I think he has the smarts to give us 15 possessions and a goal a game. If he does that while applying decent pressure that’ll do me and at the very least it’ll give the match committee reason to pause when tossing up between him and JT! The only counter to the above is that some guys grow a leg once they feel settled and we’ve yet to really see Daicos get that run at it.

That’s my take.

But I was thinking maybe I missed the memo and he’s a super star.

I think better if we let him take his time.

FWIW I think he could play wing or HFF...but on what you wrote here, I think his ball use is a hell of a lot better than Josh Smith..not just daring but positively silky. I thought Smiths ball use really quite poor, he went sideways a lot cause whenever he tried to be attacking he stuffed it up...

Id have agreed with you on the not quick enough to be outside bit, till I saw Phillips who cant run out of sight on a wet night, but if ya check a week later, he is still running. Phillips has shown me that you can be an effective outside player even if you lack a yard, but Phillips compensates with an elite tank (and underestimated smarts, Maxy Lynch also has a great tank, but he doesn't get it 25 times a game). That for me is the key to Josh as a mid, has he developed his tank so he is a 20 possession player?

Josh Smith was laconical, Daics has those fast twitch muscles, different animal all together

Personally I haven’t seen his use at AFL as a point of difference. I’d have probably put it somewhere between Mayne and Steele. Basically you feel safe when he has it, but he’s not someone the opposition doesn’t want ball in hand, yet.

Therein lies my problem, Phillips. In a vacuum Daicos’ lack of pace isn’t an issue, but when you pair him with Phillips it becomes one, IMO. I also personally don’t think Daicos has the elite tank to overcome the lack of pace at senior level. Lastly he’s a fair bit smaller than Phillips (9cm to be exact). If we broke it down on how he beats his man in the midfield all he has is his footy brain which I don’t think is enough in 2019.

The beauty is that he’s still 20 so time is well and truly on his side! Another positive is he’d be getting games at most other clubs so the teams going alright.

Regarding his pace, you realise that we currently have Mayne, Phillips and Sidebottom on the wings, yeah? Sidey and Phillips can run all day but theyre no speedsters, and Mayne is... Mayne. For mine, the most important traits for a winger are ball use and the ability to find it on the outside, and given Daicos has been performing to a high level in the position in these two areas playing on a wing in the VFL i’d back him to play the same role in the AFL, while Mayne plays the Mr Fixit role in defence.

Refer above 👍

Edit: I could probably go into further detail around where the tipping point is in terms of pace and why stacking him up against the incumbents isn’t worth it, but I don’t really feel strongly enough about the topic to invest the time it’ll take...

I think Brown has shown he is the better midfielder of the two and even he can't get a gig in the guts. I don't think Daicos is good enough to force himself into an already stacked midfield right now. He obviously could rotate through there while someone is on the bench but I think he is best served playing half forward and using his disposal into the forward line.

Pretty much my take on Shaz and Sier, but there's this one poster...
Sometimes, just sometimes one poster is right.
I’d like to meet this poster, sounds very intelligent and astute.

ps don’t forget Wells :) any poster that loves Wells is also going to be smart

They’re both completely different types though. Brown plays inside mid and Daicos plays on a wing. Whilst our midfield is stacked, we’re a man down in defence this week, which means one of two things will happen. One of Mayne or Mihocek will go to defence to cover as the third tall. Given Bucks’ comments about not really being able to gauge the effectiveness of a 3 tall forward setup last week, it’s not unreasonable to assume the same setup will be used again this week as a test and Mayne will cover for Howe in defence like he did last week, which opens up a spot on the wing.
There’s merit to the opinion that he should play half forward, but given the circumstances and where he’s been playing in the VFL, the possibility of him playing on a wing shouldn’t be discounted.

Would give him games in front of Thomas.
I really don’t see his value.

I want to see Daicos get at least 3 consecutive games to find his feet before making a reasonable judgement.

Personally I think he has enough of a skill set to make it.

You need a small fast forward who puts on lots of pressure in any team, it's critical. Daicos can't really play that role.

Not solely responsible for that embarrassment of a game at all, thought he showed some poise at times. His fumble in the third just as we were looking to shift the momentum hurt though.

22 touches, 4 tackles and I thought he looked ok. Guaranteed to get a few games while we’re a rabble and everyone is in the rehab group, so hopefully he develops and we can get a skilled half-forward to eventually push Varcoe out.
