I think it takes people with first hand indigenous experience like Ripper and a few of the other posters who know how they live their lives to explain to those of us who lack it (me especially) what Josh is going thru and how his mind ticks and how its not just needing a kick up the arse or HTFU.

Sharp and fair.

Didnt mince words and also made it sound abit more than just missing his flight.

I suspect this is going to be a play out over the longer term and the Worst and Slime are going to make hay of this.

Whilst we hear and see the obligatory St NicNat tripe and pictures of him feeding the 5000. Dare say we'll learn that hes walked on water.

Wow, Had some of the children up over Easter and have not been online. It all happens when you are not here.

Josh will be right in the end, As someone who has lived interacted and actually employed blackfella's I can say that every now and again they will just do your head in for no apparent reason (to me at least). One particular person I had employed as a TA for a few years was very good. Honest , hardworking and trustworthy , but every now and again He would disappear for a week or two. You would come to work on the following Monday and He would be sweeping up the mess (I am a messy person and He had a key to the place) and it was if he was there all the time.

"Where were you ?" I would ask him and would have turned out there was funeral somewhere of some family trouble some where. He actually got out of it in the end and eventually had the courage to call me and let me know what was going on as he realised that He didn't lose face with me.

He and I are good friends still and anytime He wants a reference I am happy to provide one.

What to take out of this story? Bushie is right , if you have not experienced thing you cannot judge thing by your own standards.

Josh Simpson is exactly what Matt rendell tried to warn the afl about and got sacked for his troubles. I'm no bleeding heart when it comes to some of the indigenous but there is a vast difference between the lives these boys come from and what I perceive the life of an AFL footballer to be. The further from the city they come from the bigger the gap

They come from an unstructured lifestyle where just attending school regularly can be a challenge for some to a heavily regimented system where eating is monitored along with fitness work with a substantial amount of work going towards understanding complex game plans. (Watch a game of predominantly indigenous players and they quite simply just want to get the ball and run -its pure but its also completely unstructured and defense is a foreign language )

The challenge for all AFL clubs is to find a balance between understanding the inherent cultural issues that come with drafting an indigenous boy and the requirements he must meet as part of the team first ethos and the vast difference in lifestyles.

I hope that the club and Simpson find that compromise because the more josh Simpsons that fail the less likely it becomes that clubs will take the risk and our competition needs the creative flair that these boys bring.

The AFL need to understand this and talk about it rather than ostracise those like rendell who were brave enough to raise the issue

There is a vast difference in just which family they come from Keyser Soze . Some familie's children go to school regularly and punctually, others have to be dragged kicking and screaming.

Having one white parent or not would not have been on my list.

Agree that the one white parent bit was poor and its also true that many make the adjustment. I don't pretend to have an answer other than acknowledging that the adjustment for a shy boy from a remote community is a lot bigger than a middle class private school boy. Compare for example frank Amos and Cyril rioli

Worthwhile quoting again.

it is little bit embarrassing when an eagle supporter has more sympathy for a player on our list than some of our supporters

Yea it is. Theres alot of narrow minded, naive posters here who shoot first without thinking. I dont know whether its out and out racism or not coz I think society kinda induces a profile that doesnt allow understanding.

Yea I've been none to fly off the handle on the odd occasion or two.

One of my favorite eagles players to watch was Ashley Sampi but he was lost to us because he had trouble adjusting and the club was unable to find a solution. I'd love to see him still playing for us not least because he's exactly the type of player we could do with right now

It's a bloody pity that people focussed on the "one white parent" comment from Rendell, because it was off the cuff and he regretted it immensly. Besides being shafted by Jason Mifsud.

Overall his message was spot on and I really felt for the guy at the time.

Cyril Rioli went to a private boarding school in Melbourne and excelled.

Josh Simpson went to a private boarding school in Adelaide and struggled.

I'll just leave that there for consumption.

Lots of country boys come from troubled backgrounds.

Its the implied racism thats the problem, the ingrained stereotyping with some of the posts on here that got my back up
We had a young indigenous country girl ,a brilliant athlete who had won a sports scholarship to our daughters school and the school asked if we would take her in for the three years she was in the city as they both played in the same netball team
This young girl moved in and became a fantastic member of the family, she has gone on to become one of Austs best female AFL players
The crux of this story is the snide, sneaky way she was treated by some members of our so called non racist society
An example is while out shopping with us she would wander of to look at something on the shelves and there would be whispering and nudging from the staff and a staff member would be sent down to stand next to her to I guess make sure she didnt steal.
My children had never suffered any like that and I was really shocked by it.As a city person I had never been involved with indigenous people and could not believe the way she was treated including snide remarks from so called friends
I was angry about her treatment but she just accepted it and shrugged her shoulders and said I'm used to it that's just the way it is.
Implied racism, the unthinking remark or post as Adam Goodes stated is as bad as the all out attack

My son is a licensed tradesman with his own business and my daughter is studying to be a Registered Nurse. Neither have had problems with the police, not even a traffic infringement. Both finished school, both play high levels of sport and contribute to their community on a voluntary basis regularly. They are well respected young people in their town and I am damn proud of them.

But what you saw happening to that girl happens to them every day of the week and it makes my blood f***ing boil. It is the snide nastiness and the "I'm not a racist but" attitude that makes me want to rip peoples throats out.

Sadly I doubt your story is an isolated case not least because I've been guilty of that type of attitude in the past on occasion and still get wary at times when i see a group of young aboriginal boys together

Until she moved in with us I had no idea how ingrained the nastiness was.

If you live somewhere like Kalgoorlie unfortunately it's just a natural reaction when they contribute to such a large % of the crime.
