um not to sure if your aware, but a possesion is different to a disposal, therefore the possesion count of 12 is how many times he disposed of the ball, possesions are getting you hands onto the ball and having it in posession, therefore diving at the bottom of a pack and grabbing the ball is a contested possesion, not a contested disposal.

not sure i agree with u on that one mate i think possesions and disposals are said with the meaning behind them being how many times u have disposed of the ball

sooo..after the game tonight, i decided to look up some of the stats of each of the players...then i came across Mister Judd.

Please explain?

Gotta love Champion Data

Unless I have missed something he had 12 not 13 possessions. They do not break them down on the AFL site as contested possessions...read that tomorrow in the Hun. Also a possession is a hard ball get, loose ball get, gather, contested mark and uncontested mark. A "contested possession" is a hard ball get, loose ball get and contested mark. Their possessions on the AFL site are actually disposals.

Hope this helps out.

I suppose a player that took a mark in the defensive 50 as the siren sounded to end a quarter & just handed the ball to the umpire would be credited with a possession & not with a disposal.
This wouldn't however explain the stat in the link.

No he's right, contested/uncontested possessions are when you get the ball, you don't have to get a legal disposal.
And you're half-to-mostly right.;)

You're only credited with a hard ball get, loose ball get, handball receive or gather if you correctly dispose of the ball. Obviously you may be awarded a free kick or mark and for whatever reason don't dispose of it (siren sounds, injury, dispossessed or whatever), but those stand regardless.

Often there will be a difference between possessions/disposals for players because, for example, a ground kick is classified as a kick but doesn't get recorded in any of the 'possession' categories. Or when a player kicks in to himself or kicks in from an opposition OOF , they're only credited with however they dispose of the ball.

I'll assume the 13th "contested possession" was when he ran into the open goal, was well tackled, then dropped the ball and the umpire (surprise, surprise) called play-on. Fortunately it was then rushed for a behind before Le Cras could swoop.

The stats are pretty surprising if true, how could Judd's 2nd goal be considered a contested possession? The ball bounced over the pack to him and he took it and kicked a goal with minimal pressure. Unless, there was obviously another of those curly ones, where he took possession without disposing of it correctly or at all.

Champion Data's interpretation of "contested" and "uncontested" possessions is pretty dodgy and confusing. To me getting a loose ball that is not really a contested possession as far as I'm concerned.
