Lyon had personal financial issues that require an increase in salary. We offered that and he jumped with his out clause.
I have no issues with him coming for money.
That’s only part of it, there were 3 clubs in the running for his services because of the clause at St Kilda with the Saints being one of them. In fact the Saints offered the same contract. But there’s a bit more to it than the contract amount & length, the amount of the ‘sign on’ fee that was offered by us was a big factor in him coaching Freo.

I don’t give a toss if he came for money, the original discussion point was his name was thrown up as a named coach who wanted to come here, I don’t know if he wanted too, bottom line is he had too.

Remembering that the year they won the flag they finished 7th, had a lucky break (week off) then played great footy through to the GF. If not for the umpiring they would not and should not have won that GF, good luck to them they did but what has Beveridge achieved since with the list he has had at his disposal? Nothing much. Beveridge, no thanks.
A Grand Final which is as much as our entire club has mustered.

When people bash Ross Lyon, I think they're not remembering exactly what was going on at the club at that point. The club had a massive injury crisis, not dissimilar to what the filth down the road have had (we just didnt sook as hard). There was 1 game (i think against Geelong) where we literally didnt have any fit key position players - no spine at all. Ross also actually took a broom through (unlike the filth) to remove players who wouldnt benefit our future, some of which were important foot soldiers (De Boer a great example; RL publicly stated that one hurt him - he thought DB couldve been captain but he had to make hard calls, and did so, and those 2 guys are still friends today, says a lot).

I was really disappointed the club didn't support Ross through his last season where the youth he brought in was starting to build, and injuries were becoming less. He's such a good extractor of talent.

Some people on here also like to say Ross inherited a massively talented list (insinuating that he didnt develop people). In part he did, but he also inherited a great number of B-graders who he extracted every ounce of talent from. Guys like De Boar, Mzungu, Crowley, Spurr, Sutcliffe were just fantastic foot soldiers. There's others too - even Barlow and Ballantyne as mature age recruits. Ballas was a Sandover medalist but still came to the club overweight and unfit. I'm sure i dont need to tell the story of Walters either. He wasnt a ready made champion when Ross arrived.

I looked back at some of the Blokes that left at the end of 2016.

Pavlich was already 34 or 35 years old. No way he was gonna hang around the club for another 2 or 3 seasons when freo were gonna rebuild and in the bottom 6.

Tendai Mzungu was solid. But at 30 or 31 years old. Maybe it was time for him to go. He played 5 games for GWS in 2017.

I will Put Matt De Boer, Clancee Pearce and Nick Suban in the same basket. All 3 came from the 2008 draft as 18 or 19 year olds. All 3 were free agents in 2016. Remarkably none of those 3 were picked up. Clancee Pearce had a one year contract offered from the hawks, he turned that down.

The one that still shocked me to this Day was the Michael Barlow call. Yes he had a shoulder injury. But 7 years on our list, I think he should of been given another contract for 2017. Dockers would of won either way. Had he had a good 2017 season, give him an extension. Had he wanted out, he was in his 8th season and would think of free agency.

I've said this before and I'll say it again but when we delisted Barlow i nearly stopped supporting Fremantle. I barely watched games that year and just felt very grey about footy. I really felt he deserved so much better than he got.

I have a feeling he will be back in purple. He will be a good assistant coach.
Probably after his apprenticeship but one to keep your eye on.

Woah, this is news to me? I don't remember hearing about this at all

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Looking back, we would've done so much better had we hung onto Tendai, MDB and Barlow. Three terrific clubmen to set the standards for the youngins.

DeBoer delisting made no sense either. He was a decent player.

At the time I don't think anybody was melting too hard about it as he we was stuck in the WAFL, albeit dominating. GWS picking him up and playing him as a pressure forward in a grand finalist team made it look a bit silly in hindsight though. Loved MDB.

Looks like we extended JLo for one (1) year only.

The "at least" part is interesting. Trigger for further extension?

Don't mind that. Means the onus is on the team to perform this year as the club will clearly review it at the end of the year, but takes the distraction away

Wot

The onus is on the team to perform every year.

Review at the end of the year to what purpose?
Unless there’s definite performance targets in this extension it sucks arse

Just because he has signed a one year extension doesn't mean he can be fired and paid out if he hasn't improved things towards the end of the season.
I good call in my opinion, now everyone will shut up and the club can get on with it.

Or, hear me out here…he could’ve been extended when the performance warranted or sacked and not paid an extra year…

Yeah, pretty much this. I'm good with this so that at the very least some of the ABSURD noise around JLo quietens down. Seriously, we haven't even played a game yet and some of the noise was acting as if we were 0-3 and JLo was in the gun.
