Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

I have hope Raz.

I hope that 2025 is the year that the dockade of dominance begins. That 2025 is the year that the Dockers win the first of many premierships over a 10 year period, finally announcing ourselves as a true powerhouse.
yes would be good. but i see nothing in team changes that will bring that about.

Will await some games into season to see if we are devloping but an Injured Darcy at season start is not good.

We need to realsie that Jackosn is not a number one ruckman . we have others in the squad. but hey such is DOCKERISM we only folow the team we know not where they go

Most posters on this board blindly praise anything supporting the club and attack anyone with a different opinion.

King Huski and Mattis are like little cheerleaders. They think giving you a thumbs down on the internet means something.
Going to jump in and defend them here.

Huskii especially regularly watches and reports on training, obviously speaks to a few ITK, and tends to steer clear of hyperbole. Given that, I would weigh his opinion more highly than most on here. We live in a world where we all believe our thoughts are as valuable as the next guy - sometimes that's true, but often it isn't. It's tiring when someone presents a factual argument based on nothing but 'the vibe', positively or negatively. As for the post that kicked this off, it made little, if any sense, and Raz got ribbed for it. Fair bump, play on.

You see nothing in team changes?

Young squad with natural improvement to come. We traded in Bolton to help fill an absolute need. We've got 2 of the best young key talls, and Jackson who could be absolutely anything. Sturt has improved out of sight as well.

Our midfield is stacked with talent. Darcy looks amazing, Young will be in his second year, Brayshaw is fully fit after suffering half the year with a knee injury. Another year into Sharp and Drizzy will see us finally have 2 good wings again.

Our backline is set and forget. Pearce, Cox and Ryan are 3 of the best defenders going round then Walker that took a few scalps last year on the best smalls in the comp. Clark and Wagner driving the ball off halfback.. Draper as well...

If we dont play finals I'm all for getting rid of JLO. In my mind there simply isn't any excuses at all.

I'm just a passionate Freo supporter who does look for the positives during pre season. I'm definitely not any more knowledgeable than others on here even though I do have a few ITK contacts.

I support the club and think JLO is a very switched on coach but that doesn't mean he's the best AFL coach.

I do appreciate the kind words. Thank you

Not sure what to say if you see nothing in team changes.....

Longmuir is at the moment an unsuccessful appointment, and he will be until he isn't. It's almost a truism for rookie coaches because success is measured by doing well in finals, and ultimately a premiership.

I am impressed by the list building and the long term commitment of a passionate group of exciting players. They are the most important part of the equation.

Wigarus (noun, informal, derogatory)

1. A person exhibiting behaviour that is excessively irritating, foolish, or self-centred; synonymous with being a “knob” or a “bellend.”
Example: “Don’t be such a wigarus, mate—just admit you were wrong.”
2. An individual who complicates simple matters for their own amusement or to display perceived superiority.
Example: “He’s acting like a total wigarus.”

Wigarus you make it sound like we're JL sycophants, which isn't true at all. I suppose everyone else looks optimistic when your own views are 100% certainty in failure of the current coach. I reiterate what I said recently, it's last chance saloon.

We're all repeating ourselves because you have some chip on your shoulder about this topic. The season needs to get underway so we can see if the good off season indicators do result in the expected improvements.

I attack weak opinions. Simple as that. If you're going to run with an outlier opinion, expect to have it challenged. It's weak to blind side attack and try to generate tribal support.

This is a forum where you will get replied to if you state an opinion. Hence why it isn't for everyone. Many cannot handle their opinion being challenged. These types go to echo chambers in the Facebook comments section.

E.g. Comments such as i can't see how our changes this off season will improve us.

Well bloody hell you must not be paying much attention.

I said i see NOTHING that will Bring a premiership this year and the next 10yrs of dominance .

put posts together when reading not just respond to the one line.. That jsut like the Cults who split from one church to form another church arguing over one line in their holy books :)

So if you see some off season changes that will lead to a ten year dominace for freo. good for you. i dont see it. We still young and developing.

Didnt see any ribbing.

Cant get ribbed for expressing an opinion .

If it was facts is stated then sure ribb me and post the true facts. but opinions are only a persons perceptions of hte world and our Perceptions are our realities therefore they are the truth to us.

turned personal all of a sudden

I guess that is the way.

I dont agree with all he said . but the truth is that somepeople think being given a THUMBS down is the end of the world and some people think Givign a thumbs down will cause devistation .

social media is powerful. but luckily we can just walk away and so disagreement is fine. WE dont need approval of others on line. But we also should not try to push people away even if we dont agree with them.

ahh not all on this board knows the joke.

perhaps it a little clique of informed people

But that is the way of social media...

Cool story bro

Most actually do.

You're very hard to understand today. Your literacy skills have taken a dive.

I reiterate what I said recently, it's last chance saloon.
2023 was last chance saloon. Then we extended to 2024 after missing finals. Then 2024 was last chance saloon. Then we extended and missed finals again.

I'm tired of repeated last chance saloons. I hope he's going to take us to Valhalla. But another season of missing finals will likely send me mad(der).

My literacy never changes . Just the amount of typos

Don't worry about it mate.
No one on the board has heard of the joke Well I p, because there's no such joke - it was Well a p
Huskii is just trying to pretend he's cool and making a goose of himself

This is definitely JLo’s last chance and I’m as critical of him as anyone can be. However, to say you don’t see this team capable of getting a premiership is madness. This is objectively the best team we’ve had in a long while.
Agree with this. It really is a huge year.
For me there’s so much uncertainty around this side at the moment.
On one hand you have people that think we are going to win 2 or 3 flags and dominate for 10 years. Realistically this is highly unlikely to happen.
In the other extreme you have the Freomaniac types that are happy if we play one finals campaign in the coming years.
For me, being as objective as possible here and in the context of an equalised 18 team comp where let’s be honest we dont get many leg ups from the AFL
- talent wise, we have collected a fine group of players. No complaints there - a job well done ✅

There is a bunch of teams that don’t have that box ticked. I think by default we are ahead of those teams in terms of readiness to win a flag. Teams like Essendon, Adelaide and St Kilda don’t have the same talent pools so even if they are better than us in every other area (coaching player development - which they probably aren’t either) they still probably won’t win a flag before us due to a lack of talent. These teams need to nail another couple of drafts.

The question marks begin when we look at other factors that contribute to a flag, besides talent.

  • Even his staunchest defenders accept that our coach is under pressure. If he doesn’t spend the entire season with his list in the top 6, he’s probably toast. Fair or unfair? After 6 years the excuses will have well and truly ran out by September in my view, whatever happens.
  • it’s been less discussed on here but our players despite all the talent are completely unproven in the main.
  • we have developed an unwanted reputation for mostly losing tight games. Extra Talent is not going to resolve this issue. We will still need to learn to win tight matches and cut out the dumb brainfades and general stress and fear that creeps in late in games.
  • we have minimal finals experience which was why I felt so frustrated at the end of last season. It was a wasted year. You pretty much cannot win the flag with a bunch of finals novices which we mostly have. Repeated examples of this in recent seasons.
  • our club has no culture of consistently winning big games. People might dismiss this factor but it is constantly popping up in so many sports. Put simply, it’s an extra mental block our team has to overcome that players from a club like Hawthorn or Geelong, simply do not have to worry about.
If we play Hawks in a grand final for example, every moment weights heavier on our players shoulders than theirs. The magnitude of what we are trying to achieve for the footy club is far greater for our players than theirs. It’s not fair, but this makes it harder for our players and is defo worth an extra few points to the opposition if they are an outfit with previous flag winning experience.

Getting across the line as a historically unsuccessful team is the hardest thing in pro sports. In recent weeks alone, the Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills, despite all their talent, found this out.

All this means we need players that are incredibly tough mentally. We have pretty much zero evidence of how many of our players will react to the immense pressure of a prelim or grand final when the weight of 30 years of failure hangs on every kick at goal. Do we have many big game players or clutch moment guys? I can’t answer that question because we haven’t seen our players in many big games or clutch moments yet 💁🏻‍♂️

Seeing is delivering for me anyway. Im a doubter until it happens.
The collection of talent we have compiled has given me hope. But that’s all at this stage.

So we have the players

But we don't have the head coach. Who should we have as head coach instead because the best ones are contracted? And it's not just head coach it's the line coaches also. Who do you suggest if JLO doesn't get the team deep into finals?

It's not just about sacking the head coach it's about developing a strong club and after speaking with Brierty at a conference I.was at the club is driven to succeed with the mindset of creating a powerful club that will be strong for years. I can see this happen

I don’t know if JL is the answer or not. I guess we’ll find out this year. By the end of year 6 freo should have sufficient evidence to know if he’s the right man or not.

If they decide he’s not, then who replaces him is a completely separate question. If they think he’s not the right man but decide to keep him in anyway because there isn’t an obvious replacement - well, I’d like to see evidence of a single similar decision on a head coach by a professional sports team that turned out to be successful.

Anyway my broader point was that while JL is in the most vital role at the footy club, the players need to take on increased responsibility this year for the results. Even if JL has flaws as a coach, the players don’t get a free pass in 2025. They aren’t kids anymore.

As for brierty - look I think we seem to be in a decent position off the field. They are saying all the right things, as one would expect. But they have proven nothing yet really, and ultimately it’s the results on the field that the club will be judged on.

On the line coaches I'm not sure we have the very group of best line coaches in the league but I do believe that we've had some very good names in there over the last 4-5 years when Longmuir has been in the seat.

It seems that Carr, Graham and Boyd are very highly rated in the AFL industry.

Of course you always look to improve but line coaches certainly can't be used as an excuse for Longmuir.
