Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

Don't know why this thread is still going.

Clearly not going to win us a premiership. Just doesn't have that intangible quality that all great coaches have.

He's soft (not that there's anything wrong with it either). Just never seen a head coach be soft and win a premiership. In basically any sport, ever.

Soon as we get rid of him, the better.
Chris Fagan is softer than JL, and his team just won a premiership.

Haven’t read thread, like to keep it simple.

Longmuir contract negotiation

Bottom 12 = Sack bring in Longmire
Top 6 = 2 year extension
Top 4 = 3 year extension
Grand finalist = 4 year extension
Flag = 5 year extension

I don’t think he’ll get any more than three years nor do I think he’ll still be unsigned by finals. If he is unsigned by finals he’s probably been sacked. Therefore top six/top four/Grand Final won’t come into it.

Ken Hinkley was re-signed late last year but generally speaking a coach that isn’t re-signed by early August is in a lot of trouble.

He’ll get two years if we look like making finals in August and three years if we’re looking like a top four side.

I can only see us going longer than three years if it’s end of 2026 and we’ve just won the flag. There’s a gap there obviously.

Sydney losing the grand final had nothing to do with them losing to Richmond.

Fremantle losing to West coast had nothing to do with us missing finals.

I haven't made any excuses. Sometimes shit happens and I've accepted it.

I feel that we are very well placed to make a serious charge into top 4 contention and perhaps a premiership.
I can explain to you why I feel that way but if you don't see it then you don't see it.

But don't call it blind faith. I've been critical in the past and call it how I see it. I'm genuinely still hurting over missing finals last year. Hell, I'm still hurting a bit over 2013 but I'm ready to be hurt again.

Bring on 2025! Freo don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more.

Is that a sly Haddaway reference...?!?!?! If so.......respekk :tearsofjoy:

I'm not in the keep/lose one way or the other phase; J-Lo and his results will determine the outcome one way or another, I'm actually not worried about it....but Hinkley, who is far from 'soft'; quasi-nasty and outspoken, is no Premiership coach either.....in fact, how's his persona working out for him?! Multiple top end finishes, finals appearances....AND..?!! No flags! He's a hell of a lot older than J-Lo that's for sure, at least Justin has time to evolve if he so chooses. Ken, beyond what he is NOW has got nuttin'...

Fagan doesn't come across as someone who breathes fire. To me he seems very involved with his players, like JLo. Not hard at all.
Coaching is moving away from the inspirational, big speech, fire up type coaches. It's all about process.
Cricket has done this with Australia and the Hurricanes as two examples.
Coaches that fire up at their players and get them fighting each other in preseason will be a thing of the distant past.
JLo is also an introvert, which can give off strong 'not confident' vibes. But behind closed doors, I understand him to be an excellent communicator.

If only AFL games were played behind closed doors.

I agree. In a theoretical interview situation Hinkley would have to absolutely nail the problems he sees with the club and outline a brilliant solution before I'd give him the gig over Longmuir.

Sack. Have updated
It will be interesting to see what happens if a 7th-8th finish eventuates.

I personally can’t see the club sacking him if so (good chance he would be extended mid year if we are entrenched in the top 8). It would suck to be in the situation of having a top 4 list but a not-quite-good-enough coach.

This is all probably moot anyway. Barring a bad run with injuries, I think we have a strong chance to finish top 6, hopefully even a bit better.

Cant recall ever seeing fagan or Mcrae

If only AFL games were played behind closed doors.
Besides the two hours of game time it is.
Closed doors before games, half time and after the game when the players are being addressed/instructed.
Plus all pre season where tactics and concepts are being discussed/developed/refined. Do you think that a coach sends the players out to train without any explanation of what they're training and why?
Does anyone, apart from those on the inner sanctum of clubs, truly know what the tactics are of any club? No. That's why there's a whole media circus built around analysing what they could be.
Most coaching is done behind closed doors.
Just because JLo doesn't have veins sticking out of his head while he screams at his players at 1/4 time, doesn't mean he's not a good coach, nor does it mean he can't get his message across.
And just because he doesn't front up to interviews with great one liners like Ross, that doesn't make him a bad coach either.
Last year, the players lost their heads in crucial moments. The last minute of the Carlon and Essendon games as examples. And failed to execute key skills at crucial times, the Amiss/Voss misses on goal against the Hawks is an example where we had all of the momentum but couldn't put them away.
Rectifying these things comes with experience. But also the coaching group and players acknowledging the errors and training to understand the process required so that it doesn't happen again.
Screaming into the phone on matchday is a result of poor execution of process by the player/team. But it's not going to change the outcome.

Yeah. A 200 metre sprint, fastest time wins. Also, if you can't present a good cuppa and hob-knob presentation....forget about it :tearsofjoy: :laughv1:
Would you settle for a 20 metre light jog, blend 45 coffee and a pack of Tim Tam's?

We can specualte all we like about JLo. I like him. I think he's achieved a lot.
Whatever happens in 2025 I think the time for giving him 'the benefit of the doubt' is past. If we don't finish Top 6 minimum let's hope there is a better option.
That last phrase is the issue I think.

Unless you are in a basket case situation with a coach, there rarely is a better option, only a different option.

Lyon was imo the only time we found a better option. The rest, including Longmuir, were the change we had to have.

Google Claudio Ranieri.

He spearheaded one of the greatest achievements in the history of sport and his catchphrase during Leicester's title year was "dilly ding dilly dong". He rewarded good performances with pizza parties.

I'm iffy on Longmuir but the idea you need to be visibly 'tough' to succeed is pretty outdated.

The old pizza party

I thought only my amateur coach did that
