I found the presser subdued and underwhelming, lacked vigour and excitement.
I have heard zilch from Fyfe and the players commenting on the appointment.
It's just been a dull exercise little enthusiasm from anyone really.

Sorry for quoting you twice as I really do respect your opinion but this was never a top coach poached recruitment. It was more a best suited candidate.

Yep that’s the line that got my attention.
- basically saying I can’t miss an opportunity to take a cheap shot at freo , even if it is a blatant lie

Gawd just fu** old man already will ya

People who think 6pr are going to give Longmuir a grace period are kidding themselves.

I hope Hack and Hardly get pimp slapped by Longmuir prior to next season's final series

People being less than enthused by a lack of excitement in Longmuir's appointment on BF hasn't gone unnoticed by Peter Bell (an avid BF reader). According to the cousin of my real estate agent who runs an events company, this year's Doig will rival the glamour of an Olympic Opening Ceremony.

** Spoiler Alert **

Prior to JLo's arrival the room will descend into silence, the sound of a helicopter can be heard approaching the venue and landing outside as a world class laser light show builds suspense. The room goes completely dark for a couple seconds before flames shoot up all over the stage and 10 cubic metres of glitter descend into the ballroom as "Let's Get Loud" booms over the dozen or so 2000 watt speakers. The double doors open as a white stallion carrying Freo's saviour gallops through, rearing up like a scene from an old Western classic and doing a full 360 as if in slow motion. Jlo climbs up to a standing position on the horse's back as it nears the stage and performs a perfect double forward flip to land centre stage and facing the audience. A slight pause and he then raises his hands into the air, the audience erupts with screams of delight, chants of "JLo" and the room glows into a perfect shade of purple as if under a spell by the new head coach.

Taylor !!

No need to let the facts get in the way of a good story ;)

The story I read was that both GWS and Richmond had utilised the same number of first round picks since the inception of the draft . That number being 33. Main difference being that for Richmond this was a 33 year exercise as opposed to 8 years for the giants

I see what your saying but I strongly don't agree with that

On Saturday GWS had exactly the same amount of first round draft picks on the ground as Richmond

People are so fixated on the early days of the giants. But those days are long gone. They have no more stars running around than at West coast.

The grand final had Lloyd, Sam Reid, Perryman, Brent Daniels, Sam Taylor, Shane mumford, Shaw. So many players that were no result of the concessions at all.

Players like Treloar and Adams ran for the limelight, and lots of the concessions players were poached by Melbourne clubs. Even Freo has 2 if you think about it. I think I saw a stat the other day that 18 ex listed giants players are running around at other clubs. That's a hell of a lot in 8 years. Imagine if that happened at Freo

Cogs, Whitfield, Kelly, Cameron and Greene all had much bigger offers to go to Melbourne clubs but stayed. And clubs like Richmond and hawthorn were among them, so they didn't stay at GWS for a flag did they. They stayed for the culture and to finish what they started with their mates.

In contrast Gold Coast players leave for a pay cut

If JL can create this environment, I believe it's the missing piece in the puzzle, and he has identified that

Not sure any of what you are putting there is any real evidence of what you contend. First it makes no sense to talk of "culture" an then dismiss something that happened less than a decade ago. Also having a riches of talent allows a club to feast off that with trading and more top draft picks and contiually feast off that year by year.

Building a competitive team requires a good balance of different types of players, but the core of players is what drives it. Having a mass of elite players allows a lot of leeway to bring in other grunt and role-playing footballers. the players that left GWS (often due to salary cap and/or opportunity limitations) allowed them to continue to bring in players, but if I was going to keep anyone Cognilio, Cameron, Kelly, Whitfield would be top of the list and it minimises the loss of Treloar, Shiel etc. Even Wilson had a Williams to buffer his loss.

Freo had minimal unwanted player movement from 2012-15, whereas once their W&L became more L all of a sudden players heads are turned more easily. Look you can't just have talent without the right planks in place off field and expect that to translate, but nothing invests players efforts than the prospect of winning.

I liked the presser yesterday and was trying to look up historical first pressers for comparison (clarko) with no luck. I must say it wasn't a touch on the first Ross presser at fremantle, that was 25 mins of high art

Lol. If you truly think my post was an attempt to ridicule you personally I think you need to go and check on your ego.

If you don't find my posts intellectual nor humorous please put me on ignore. Go check the posts prior - you are the only one doing name calling. Perhaps you should treat others as you expect others to treat you?

Ftr I agree with what you said (about it being far from a slick presser yesterday) but I also think (and empathise) that JLo was extremely nervous. Given he was nervous I think it was the right move to have tone it down a bit and make it more about the content of what he said. Bell will get him some media training and he'll be more polished in front of a camera in no time.

I think I was the only voice on here that criticised the presser so I had every right to think that you were referring to me. Humour like sarcasm is in the eye of the beholder and I didnt find your post funny.
If you agreed with me but with reservations why not post that instead of that sarcastic ramble.

I didn't mind the presser, looked clearly overwhelmed to be in that position. He also would have had a million things going through his mind and wanted to say a lot of things which is why ended slipping up a bit. It doesn't really bother me, I don't feel entitled to information in these AFL pressers, nor do I need to be persuaded by words.

Going by the boards vision and our aggression this trade period, we should be playing finals regardless next season :)

Hey I never left!

Wait a minute......

Hold on,

Oh,

Never mind.

With all sincerely due respect, Salim, I for one am excited.

I was there at Subi for his thriller of a match-winning goal and we jumped and yelled and cheered ourselves hoarse. Sure, it's just a moment - and it's got little or nothing to do with his future coaching. But's it's something I'll eternally treasure as a Freo member.

I was sadly disappointed when Justin Longmuir went to the Eagles. Now I can revel in the positive associations of his Freo history and look forward to our next chapter with enthusiasm.

Jobs for the boys.

I don't buy that Longmuir was the best choice. I think he was the best fit from a PR perspective and the board are more interested in being financially successful than successful on field. Ross was clear in his final presser that the board had told him he wouldn't be renewed even if he was successful. I don't believe they seriously canvassed the marketplace for the best guy. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't even talk to the other 4 coaches that got appointed.

I'm struggling to think of a coach that played for a club returning as a senior coach with success and I can't think of any good examples.

I would agree with Salim completely in saying that the media conference was underwhelming. I found it cringeworthy and turned it off.

I don't buy this at all. Yes his public speaking needs some work but jobs for the boys is ridiculous.

Allcock wants the club to increase membership and be commercially viable so they can become an AFL powerhouse. You don't axe a seasoned coach and apppoint someone who is one of the boys for this to succeed.

None of us know how applicants pressented so your opinions are based on assumptions not facts
