Not sure on that. Bell is getting off lightly imo, should be the first one sacked.
I would possibly think so too....

Remember when for many seasons we had constant injuries and had bad medical, stength and conditioning staff?

Webber was there for 8-10 seasons. He gets sacked, gets a similar job at Perth Glory. We get Phil Merriman and we have had bugger all injuries in the last 2 seasons.

I’m willing to give JL a chance for now.
But the remainder of this year is a part of his performance management plan. He needs to show some improvement in the next 5 weeks. He doesn’t get a free pass to write the next 5 games off no matter how much worse we get in them.
That would be the mentality of a loser club.
If we lose all 5 remaining games he will do very well to survive that.

I think it’s more to do with skill levels than anything else

Until all those kids play 2-3 seasons together under all sorts of pressure we can’t expect to see the same consistency as a Collingwood , Richmond or Geelong who just play instinctively knowing their team mates strengths and weaknesses

Lack of leadership in the midfield is killing us as well .

Watch the replay of Saturdays game
Just before the first bounce there is a shot of our midfield group together talking shop
They are absolutely just Kids .
Omeara was there and said a bit but otherwise it was just a group of 21, 22 year olds taking the weight of a whole club on their shoulders
Damn I miss Fyfe
If we ever needed him it’s right bloody now ( and to have kicked a bit straighter in 2013 😁)
We have been in that mode since 2017. Just pump games into the kids!

It. Doesn't. Work.

Gold Coast and GWS have been pumping games into kids for a collective 25 seasons for zero (0) flags.

Does making finals really mean much if you’re not in the running for a flag

Short term thinking has got us into this mess

I’ll happily sacrifice finals next year if we take a step back and get the pieces we need into the club for a true crack at it

Are you happy about freos current situation?

Bottom 4 finish and no pick 5, thats going to the demons.

This is just not true.

Lyon had a team with 10 All Australians including a midfield of Sandilands, Pavlich, Fyfe, Neale and Mundy. 16 AAs and 3 Brownlows.

I can see we're done here.

Really? Ross Lyons side had 10 All Australian players. Pav got 6 but they were all between 2002-08.

Sandilands got 4... 2008-10 and 2014.

Fyfe got in 2014-5 and 2019.

A few dockers only got in the AA team just once. Ballantyne (2014), Mundy (2015) , McPharlin (2012) , Johnson (2014)

Michael Barlow never got in once. Could make a case for 2012-4 seasons stats wise.

When do we sack this hack?

How come Voss can change things up to get Carlton back on track? Why does our Coach look frightened in the box?

We lose to Eagles he may as well clear out his desk that night as membership will go down if we keep him on. Do not want to hear how young we are!! Most our players were high draft picks.

This is the line in the sand like 2011. Do we continue with mediocrity or do we get someone who can do something with this list.

Go read this thread the supporters were saying the same thing about Voss about 6 weeks ago. Longmuir got a very young team into 5th last year & we ran out of steam. This year was always going to be difficult albeit now disappointing.

Next year is the year, if we’re struggling by the bye he will be gone but he deserves another preseason to iron out the faults & implement a more rounded game style.

How come Voss can turn it around? Ask the players because coaching wise there nothings changed massively in 6 weeks.

Voss is in his 2nd year at Carlton. Jlo has had 4.

I want to see a change in his coaching in the last 5 games and he really needs to work on the 1st qtrs. Can he rev them up ffs!!

If Dimma is interested or someone else highly rated we need to put the big boy pants on and become serious again.

what I’d like to see in the last 5 games from a coaching perspective -

  • Win at least 3 of the first quarters and be within 15 points in the other 2 games at QT, as an absolute minimum.
  • some kind of different approach to kick ins
  • some run and carry from half back instead of chipping aimlessly around
  • a different approach at centre bounces to just passing the ball around via handballs under immense opposition pressure
  • just some general improvement in our ball movement which has been pretty terrible for most of the season

- if JL loses all 5 remaining game i think He will be untenable in that position. West coast are the worst team in AFL history and losing to them is quite frankly unthinkable. There will be no coming back from that for JL. He is basically coaching for his job in that game IMO.

So we beat the Eagles by a point and he keeps the gig?

There has to be a review. Win or lose derby we must review this season.

for some strange reason, barring a few seasons, we alway had a weak team psychologially or mentally.

Last season we constantly trailed at half time. Ok by a point or 2 or even a goal or 2 down. But we came into the 3rd and attacked, we lead at 3 quater time. in the 4th quarter, we either held on or we thrashed sides.

Point is, Talent wise this squad is good. yet the pieces are not together

It’s pretty young, pretty good however pretty inconsistent.
Young teams shouldn’t be pushed to make top 4.
Erasmus, Henry, MJ, Amiss, Jackson new players to the team this season.
Replacing Mundy, Fyfe, Tabs, Lobb, Acres. That’s pretty significant change in game plans and understanding
didnt we draft a lot of kids in the 2016-19 drafts?

Neither were Carlton for half the year & they have a way more balanced list.
Things change quickly & the cream is rising. Bombers, Saints probably cooked & they’ve had decent seasons to now.
North & Hawks starting to click at times & look good. Really when you look at our age demographics without Fyfe, Mundy, Acres, Lobb we’ve got far more in common with the Hawks or North which is about where we’re punching weight wise.

We didn’t have to lose so many mature bodies, Acres should of been offered a
reasonable contract.
Losing Mundy, Lobb, Tucker was always on the cards, Acres and Logue was on
us. Being too clever or arrogant or just poor list management.
Self inflicted.

We played it cool with Acres and Logue and it has cost us. Other teams came in when word of low ball offers got out and it was done. Acres kicking was annoying at times, but he took ground, won one on one contests and got back to help for the defenders. Logue would have allowed Pearce to rest earlier.

I don't think we can play the age card when we made those mistakes. They were not forced on us.

Lobb has been more than offset by Jackson and Jackson will only improve.

Bell and co got cute and we are paying for it in a couple of key areas of the ground. We may have found one last week but neither Henry or Noddy this season are coming close to what Acres gave us last season.

Acres didn’t even get offered a lowball contract, it was lower then that.
Watch us pay Henry 300k the same amount Acres wanted, for not even 30% of the workrate which Acres has.

Arrogant and entitled list management. 2022 really made coaches, Bell overrate themselves.
There was nothing fun that came about the shitty negotiations. Lobb was always going. Meek and Tucker better opportunities.

Yeah it hurts losing so many Mature Bodies. Losing Neale was bad, but we made the best out of a bad situation. Only problem is we squandered those compo picks for neale.

Yet... Brad Hill wanted out and went to the saints. Brad Hill was a good solid player at the dockers. Peter Bell demanded a couple of 1st round picks, including their pick 6. But Saints still paid way overs for Brad Hill both in wages and trading.

Ed Langdon was traded for unders but he was out of contract.

Brad Hill is good, But in no way would you throw $900,000 a year at him.

Also It was Brad Hill and 2020 future 3rd for Picks 10, 58, 2020 2nd , 2020 4th and Blake Acres. Pick 10 was traded down to get caleb serong. 2020 2nd and 2020 4th was traded to collingwood for 2020 3rd rounder and James Aish.

Yet we sort of shot our own on the foot in 2000-2006. Trading heavily every 2nd year for players.

Peter Bell in 2000, Des Headland in 2002 and Josh Carr were examples. All 3 cost a minimum 1st and 2nd round pick. All 3 were premiership players at their previous clubs before joining Freo.

Point is if you are contending for finals, sure every 2 seasons you can trade a 1st and 2nd for a player to improve your best 22. On average, teams use 4 or 5 picks in the national draft each year. So trading a 1st and 2nd rounder for a player means you use 3rd and 4th picks or late picks or PSD picks for kids.

Well in a way, the dockers have a balanced list....

Backline has Got Alex Pearce and Brennan cox as the tall defenders with Joel Hamling as back up. Heath chapman has a future. in 2019-2021, we had Tobe Watson and Taylin Duman as back up talls at 190-192 cm.

Hughes, Walker, Clark, Luke Ryan and Hayden young can fill the back flanks or pockets.

In the middle, Fyfe, Broadie, Brayshaw, Serong are solid inside mids. Clarke, Aish, Henry can play as wingers. Karl Worner is back up, So is Travis Coyler. Frederick and Walters can rotate on a forward flank and on a wing too.

Darcy is a good ruckman. but we really need to find that Jono Griffin type back up ruck that is solid.

Forward line isnt great but at least its not limited and theres some quantity and variety.

Luke Jackson is only 22 years old but can play Full forward and ruck. Amiss is promising. can play Full forward but can settle as a CHF. Traecy can play as a CHF or 3rd tall too, Same with Sam Sturt.

Walters is at the end of his career. Switkowski, Schulz and Frederick can play as small forwards.

Sure. I guess I mean more balanced in terms of age & experience in the sweet spot. We’re much more like north or hawks in age profiles.

The other issue is competing with WC for WA players now too.
At least the players who will want in will be doing so not just for money.
I think that there is enough talent to put more effort into the draft.
Sure if a Brockman, DGB, Sharp, seek us out you look at the proposal.
Freo being too clever has put this club into a never ending cycle.
The clubs in the window are using Free Agency to get an edge on the competition.
We have just laid the pad, and have already blown the budget on trimmings.

The footy intelligence is extremely low in this thread, how can you hate JL when you can see how he's got us playing with a young team down in Geelong against the reigning Premiers. They've got much more class, experience and talent and we're beating them. He knows exactly how we need to play to be successful.

He will always struggle to win favour on this board because he’s not alpha enough apparently
