To me the media and WAFC pushing Sumich has got my back up

Should be purely a Fremantle Decision

I hope the panel is Independant

IF..... he is the best and most Qualified for the position so be it but ....
Your last sentence is the key, but he is similar age to Lyon and been out of senior AFL for a few years. I think the game has changed in that time, and would much prefer someone who is currently in the system. His under 18 stuff would be ok, but is pretty minor in terms of what the job entails.

Like others, I would be distancing myself emotionally from the club if he was appointed and would take significant convincing.

I wonder how many of these guys Bell has called. Has anyone heard of Matthew Nicks?
My enduring memory of Matthew Nicks was when he played for Sydney & a camera in the changerooms caught him picking his nose & (I think) eating it. There was a joke for a bit calling him Matthew Picks

Same, I was trying to appear impartial but I too would have to distance myself from anything with a smell of media West Coast influence

I haven't read through all 67 pages in this thread so it may have been answered but in regards to Sumich, why has he not been giving the head coaching role at another club previously? Believe its 4 or 5 he's gone for? I keep hearing how good a coach he is but what is it that the other clubs have found that they wont give him a shot? Something just isn't right there, i mean his own club in West Coast went with Adam Simpson over him (proven to be correct choice).

I'd be very surprised if Longmuir wasnt our coach next year

No doubt they will regret it.

I never thought we should sack Lyon BUT if we did, we should have had someone else available and in mind. Not this cluster fu** now where we had noone in mind, it was just "dur the media and WCE supporters didn't like Lyon"

We are literally back to square one on the coach.

Sacking Ross wasn't a risk - it was a gamble pure and simple. We could select a complete dud and we've then ruined Fyfe's peak and we'll be at the bottom half of the table for the foreseeable future until we "get lucky" and unearth another superstar.

This my fear too, I hope it’s unfounded

I don’t disagree at all. One I am interested in is Jade Rawlings. I caught an interview with him on SEN earlier in the year and thought he came across really well. He has done the level 4 coaching course and I’m sure coached at VFL level as well. Hoping he has been shortlisted by the panel.
My biggest issue is that we sacked a recognised coach and have taken a leap into the unknown with no stand out prospect in sight. Give me a half decent prospect as the reason, and I could accept it, but the club has made it really clear that there is no plan.

**** there are some sooks around. Thought I’d stumbled onto a WC supporters board for a minute.

But I’m glad they’re revealing themselves tbh.

But unfortunately we’re stuck with these fickle supporters among our midst, because if they actually stop and think for a minute (admittedly a very hard concept for some of them to grasp) Sumich has absolutely no chance of being the head coach of Fremantle ever!

The guy can coach and is very intelligent in a football sense so he’ll be spoken to and so should he be but he won’t get the gig.

The sky isn’t falling 🤣🤣🤣

Yeah, nah.
Appointing Sumich after we sack Ross would be an idiotic move. Where’s the fresh start? Where’s the boldness?
A stubborn man.. to a disgruntled stubborn man. Heh. Inspiring.
Sumich should’ve applied elsewhere, hasn’t coached at all at the top level since he left Freo. Again, U/18 football isn’t really a strength. Individuals playing for their AFL career. That’s all.

Yeah there's definitely more too it than completing a course but it'll be interesting to judge the next lot of blokes who are coaching after the course compared to those who haven't (ie Rhyce Shaw)

As for what I could find regarding a list of level 4 coaches I found

Adam Kingsley
Matthew Nicks
John Barker
Brendan Bolton
Stuart Dew
Brett Montgomery
Peter Sumich
Robert Harvey
Simon Lloyd
Justin longmuir
Leigh Tudor
Steven King
Brendon Lade
Dean Solomon
Jade Rawlings
Scott Burns
Brett Kirk
Craig Jennings
David Teague
Blake Caracella (Didn't finish)
Simon Goodwin

From that group Bolton would be a bust but was the first ever graduate, Dew would be an interesting one considering he's a good coach with a crap team, Teague and Goodwin would probably be deemed successes in the short term
Have you got a link for that, or if behind a paywall copy the appropriate information? I looked as well and only non paywall I could find was this and I'm not sure if Sumich finished the course did he?

afl.com.au/news/2017-06-22/coachings-generation-next-get-their-stripes

THE AFL'S next wave of senior coaches have received formal recognition, with a graduation ceremony held for the inaugural group of Level Four coaches on Wednesday evening.

The seven-man group, which included Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin, were recognised with the highest accreditation for potential AFL coaches after an extensive two-year course.

The other graduates were John Barker (Carlton), Stuart Dew (Sydney), Robert Harvey (Collingwood), Adam Kingsley (St Kilda), Simon Lloyd (Geelong) and Matthew Nicks (Port Adelaide).

The first Level Four group was selected in March 2015 after a lengthy interview process that included input from club CEOs and presidents, former AFL coaches and international coaches.

There have since been two further intakes, in 2016 and earlier this year 2017, with a total of 10 coaches remaining active in the course.

Last year's intake included Justin Longmuir (West Coast) and Jade Rawlings (Melbourne), as well as Peter Sumich and Brett Montgomery, who have since left the AFL system but are completing the course.

The 2017 group is made up of Scott Burns (Collingwood), Brett Kirk (Sydney), Brendon Lade (Port Adelaide), Leigh Tudor (North Melbourne), Dean Solomon (Gold Coast) and Steven King (Western Bulldogs).

Hasn't left the state either to pursue coaching, so all he knows comes from 2 WA clubs.

I'd rather someone who has done a broader apprenticeship and can bring that knowledge to us.
