Kane Lucas - Where do we play him

I'm hoping we play our BOTTOM 22 in the pre season, which for now should include our most recent draftees. It'll give all the others a good chance to get some game time and our stars an extra few weeks in the pre season.

The man is quality - nobody say nay
Let him aclimatise to the pace of the game up fwd then let him float between the fwd line, mid and back line. He has all the attributes of a bloke who can do this role perfectly
He maybe the godsend we require

Where should we play him?
He says he preffers midfield but dont no if he will fit straight in there. I think we will start him at foward flank or on the wing.

Your thought ?
You bloody D#^*khead, where else will we play him other than the "Ants" in positions of where he needs to be trained.
He may play a game or two in the seniors but that will be enough for 2010.;)

compared to most rookies he has been hardened up I should say
lots of work still to do but I think he maybe able to fast track his readiness to play for the Blues. But we shall see. Certainly will make the Ants a competitive lot this year with so many peopletrying to stand out for selection.

Who do we drop for Lucas in the middle then? I'll assume Gibbs, Murph, Judd, McLean and Joseph are safe. Simpson? Carrots? Robinson? Houli? Scotland? Hadley? Lucas might be as skillfull as some of our guys, maybe even a shade more, but they have experience and the better bodies on their sides. Expect to see him chilling in the ants except for the percentage boosters.

Be hard up forward. I reckon the forward line will look like this, remembering usually forward lines aren't 6 man much anymore with loose men back. Waite said on Ch 10 last week he was mainly playing forward this year.

HF Waite/ maybe Walker (possibly rotating in mid) O'Halpain
F Yarran Henderson Betts

That's not accounting for Garlett, Houlihan, and maybe Robbo. There's always rotations though with others.

Hard getting the in the midfield too....Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, McLean, Simpson, Carrazzo, Grigg, Scotland, Walker, Joesph when the latter 2 are there. Maybe even Russell and Waite too.

Now Lucas, Kerr and Davies.

Bullants will have plenty of run this year looking at that list. Pity teams are only 22.

At least we have lots of time to develop them.

Given that depth could've got a KP player I suppose as that was an area of need but I suppose from that now I should move on from that now given I've bleated about it since the draft. We got some good kids.

everybody in our season review said we did not rotate the midfield enough - the more the merrier

We would be playing more than 5 mids/ centres/ followers/ HFF.

IMO, Idealy you only need @ 6 KPP/ talls on the park and one on the bench (likely to be Waite, O'hailpin, Jamison, Bower, Henderson, Thornton and Kruezer). Additionally you need 1 Ruck on the ground, and 1 on the bench. (Lets assume Hampson/ Warnock).

That's 9 'Talls' (with 7 on the park at any one time) - probably already a little top heavy... and you certainly wouldn't want to go any taller.

By my count that leaves 13 'mids/ smalls' (at a minimum) in your starting 22.

Say: 2 followers, 3 centers, 3 small/ medium defenders, 3 small/medium forwards, plus at least 2 on the bench for rotations.

For mine id have:

Foll: Judd, Murphy
Centers: Mclean, Gibbs, Simpson
Defenders: Army, Joseph, Russell
Forwards: Lucas, Yarran, Betts
Bench: Carrazo and one of (Robinson, Hadley, Hoops or Scotland)

Would have to play wing, or HF flank initially. Looks to be a highly talented, skillful, and creative playmaker. Doesn't have the strength yet to take on fulltime midfield duties. The guy's incredibly driven, and I wouldn't be surprised if he does the impossible and forces his way into the side for the round 1 Bleakmond game. As mentioned, could play a Simmo type role.

Playing off a HFF (with Yarran) is where id have him starting.

Not a bad idea. Both talented, creative playmakers, both very quick and good overhead. Prefer Yarran a kick and a bit out from goal where he can use his creativity. Eddie is the close-to-goal crumbing specialist, and Garlett's kinda in between. Also going to be interested in seeing how Kerr progresses over the preseason - looks to be a natural medium forward. So many small, medium and tall forwardline options. For years everything was built around Fev, and not getting in his way. Now all of a sudden there's opportunity for the other forward line talent. Just hope we manage to settle the structure early on.

Not sure you would play Betts, Yarran, Garlett and Lucas together on the forward line just yet. Too many light bodies for mine. I think when Lucas gets the nod Ratts will probably start him on a wing - giving his tendency to run and bring others into the game it would be a great place to set up scoring opps.

He was drafted to be rotated through the mid field ?

You are all mostly talking KP ??

I reckon Judd being awol for the first games gives this
young bloke a chance. But at 78 kg ? Crikey, they gotta
get some KFC into the dude....

Not KP, Forward, there is a difference.

Not all forwards are 190cm plus and mark and kick goals.

KFC would probably bloat the kid and severly reduce his fitness.

I realise that was a joke but come on, you could of just as easily said "get the kid in the gym and don't let him out till March" same weight gain effect, less likely to puke all over teammates

Probably right
extra hot Nando's should have him hopping instead

I know we would play more than 5 and keep up our rotations, I'm not stupid.

But to put Lucas in, SOMEBODY has to come out of the team and it doesn't make sense to remove our KPs for a midfielder. If you check it again, I said I'll assume those 5 midfielders/flanks are safe because they are integral parts of our team, then I listed about 6 players who are part of the midfield rotation that might come out of the team. Then you've got Betts/Garlett/Yarran who I don't include because they spend the vast majority of their time up forward.

There is nothing wrong with having 9 talls when 4 or 5 of them move like midfielders. We need to use players like Irish, Waite, Hampson and Kruezer in positions that utilise their skills to create defensive mismatches.

Don't suppose you saw much of him during the year at East Freo did ya Guns? Either on TV or live?
I can now say officially wablues will sponsor Kane Lucas for 2010 and beyond. We look forward to a close relationship with him and our current youngman David Ellard.
I did not see him much to be honest but have spoken to people who have an interest esp in East Freo. They certainly talk him up.
I have high hopes he will do well.

I saw Lucas play for East Freo in the WAFL this year, without being biased as an East Freo fan, the kid took a while to adjust to the tempo of WAFL footy. Yet Yarren killed in the WAFL in 2008, but struggled to have an impact in the AFL this year....so who knows what will happen next year with Lucas, but I reckon he will be more than serviceable and surprise a few folk with a few 25 plus possession games!...though he didn't kick too many goals at East Freo.

Lucas will definitely play more AFL than VFL in 2010, the kid oozes class, being in the midfield that Carlton has will only fast track his progress.....thus he might slot in on a HFF, wing or even HBF with odd bursts through the midfield from time to time may be go. I wish you guys all the best with Lucas, the kid is a diamond and hopefully will provide the Carlton footy club and fans with 150 plus games of quality service.
