Do I really believe?

At the game today mid second quarter I thought to myself, ‘the annual Gold Coast choke fest is on again for the blues. My 12 year old son who has only seen us lose live in his lifetime was really angry which is rare for him to get that way (usually I am the one throwing the toys out of the cot). I embraced him and said ‘don’t worry mate, we are different now. We will either come back and make this a close one, maybe even win although unlikely or we will get the win next week and be in finals. I will fly down to MELB or get tickets to the Gabba for our prelim that we will win’. We both calmed down and I kid you not, within a couple of minutes we had front row seats to the Curnow show! After the game we both hugged each other teary eyed trying to sing the song with barely voices left. Finally he felt what I used to feel at his age. A reason to believe.

Amazing to think that 12 weeks ago I wasn't thinking about footy much at all, and if I did it was only to think about whether there was a way to turn a top 4 draft pick into whatever we needed to finally get ourselves out of the mire.

Skip forward to now and I'm now planning for the blues to be part of September action. To finally get to see Cripps play finals. To see how well our reborn system holds up against the best. To wonder just how far we can go.

It's been a great ride to be on - what a thrill to get here

The last 2 years have shown a direct correlation between a star player featuring in a cash converters add and winning the premiership.

2021 - Petracca (games console)
2022 - Cameron (drill and saw)

In 2023 Patty Cripps (surf board and golf clubs) makes an appearance.
Could this be a massive omen for Carlton?

To make it interesting Lauchie Neale also makes an appearance. (Didn't see what he bought but was probably crap).

If either Carlton or Brisbane win the GF this year then this omen is ****en legit!

Thought you guys should know.

Edit: Lauchie Neale got a shit radio.

Not yet but getting closer, for me, unless we win the flag, it's not about this year it's about how we react to the pressure next season and beyond.

We should be a realistic premiership chance for the next few years and it's that pressure that will define if I can believe.

This has been a memorable season so far. It's been a crazy one as well, but the years of hurt and pain are over.

This team is well set up to be up and about and competing for flags for a good five years and a bit imo.

The year after Argentinas National Football side La Albiceleste ('The White and Sky Blue') won their first World Cup in 1978, we were Premiers (1979).

The year after they won their second world cup in 1986, we again won the flag (1987).

Argentina won their third World Cup last year.

I dunno.

Belief's a weird thing. I believed we were better than the sum our parts were producing last year before round 14. That, I believed; ball kept bouncing the wrong way, players kept getting ****ing injured and zigging when their teammates thought they were going to zag. I knew we were going to turn it around.

This year's uncharted waters for me. I'm 35 with no real memories of '95, no real memories of a dominant Carlton side. Dominance is what I've seen other teams do; the most dominant Carlton side I saw before last year was ****ing 2011, we couldn't even win three in a row. Every time opposition sides get a few goals in a row, I get the shakes. Is this where things revert to how they are, when the illusion disappears? I can still keenly remember round 4 in 2018 when the suns kicked a goal in the dying ****ing minute to steal a game we'd led all ****ing day; rankling at the injustice whilst forcing myself to accept that we were just not good enough and it'd be a long, long time before we were.

So no, I don't think I believe yet. I don't have faith, because I've not seen us be this good before and I've genuinely most of my life not known sustained success.

What I am is thrilled to be here, and excited to see what happens next.

I'm old, been around for 8 flags, and through those years you get a clear picture of where a club/team sits

I was a lurker on bigfooty for many years and only decided to start posting when MLG had the strength to make a call on our first dedicated, strategic rebuild

I knew then, that it would not be a false dawn of past amateur attempts, the arrogance was diminishing

Of course there would be speed humps along the way and most times, the people that strip back an organisation are replaced through different phases

While we might not have the overall talent of past eras, this is now a collective that is driving team rather than individuals

Yep it’s certainly the best we are getting from a collective since 2000/2001, in terms of role players doing their jobs.

The Ratts era team felt flakier than that.

I’m not convinced we will win a flag, as they are bloody hard to win, but I’m very sure we will be in contention the next 5 or so years.

Even then, we could make it longer, with good drafting, trading and free agency. We are a big club near the pointy end of the ladder so will be an attractive destination.

I think the reactions of the Pies supporters on the main board, confirm that we are back as major players here.

If we can avoid travelling interstate in the finals then we have a serious chance of landing that flag.

I believe we can beat allcomers apart from the Swans on Grandfinal Day
Well I guess that's a step forward michael considering it wasn't that long ago that you tipped the sun's to beat us, told us that we were stagnating in the 6 - 12 bracket and that a heap of teams including the dogs and * were better than us.

Hopefully by the end of the year you'll be a true believer. ☺️
