Player Watch Kayle Kirby (Delisted 2018)

You can teach a kid how to eat well, how to run and lift weights. You can't teach a kid to kick under a smother and run a goal through in heavy traffic. This lad has "goal kicker" imprinted somewhere in his psyche. A natural born goalkicker is something we've missed since Didak and it will be great to have that finisher on our list again. Cold blooded goalkickers are hard to find.

You can't teach a lack of work ethic.

Hopefully Kirby's terrible fitness is more a result of ignorance rather than laziness and we can turn him into the exciting small forward we need.

I disagree with your first point but I digress...

It may be lucky for us that he is carrying some weight, had he been super fit we may not have had the pick to get him. Well worth the risk at the pick we used.

Congrats on picking up Kirby.

Was hoping he would last to our rookie pick but with Bolton and Rioli we have his position covered.

His issue has always been application. The talent is there but the challenge will be whether he can knuckle down in a professional system.

I'm surprised we've taken a gamble pick under Buckley. Probably one of a few with Abbott but this time straight on to the playing list. Culture issues can be handled under a good coach who can control it. Let's hope Buckley has turned the corner and will now draft players based on talent rather than staying away from the rat pack mentality.
Get him in the right place Bucks and he will be a star with the sounds of it.

You can change men to think differently and motivate. So I disagree there.

Roves the packs beautifully and has a decent leap for his size, I like this selection.
First time since ages that I have seen you saying something positive. And that is a very big compliment for the young man.

Not a fan of the pick. I not sure why we decided to pick this guy when we previously committed to both Brown and Daicos as smalls.

As for xfactor we have Elliott, Fasolo, WHE, Daicos. I think we were fine in this area once it was agreed to pick up Daicos. I dont think Kirby fills a need.

Could turn into a hard small back. Worth the punt , we lose nothing with this pick

We haven't gone for vanilla players for a change.

The rat pack mentality is alright for a bunch of established players but as a spine for a developing playing list and beacon of inspiration for the younger kids absolutely toxic and destructive . And that is partially their responsibility, not the coaches. Perhaps something for the Bucks thread if you want to discuss that further.
As for KK : with Wells in, Varcoe more established and Caff in his new role, I am more positive that we can make something out of players like him then in the previous years.

Elliott who has injury question marks and WHE and Daicos who are unproven.

TBH I'm more excited about this guy then Daicos. Daicos from what I've seen and heard seems like a one paced outside mid who lacks a hard edge and is poor defensively. Has some composure ball in hand and creative with a good side step. Does anyone have access to his goal kicking stats? Watching him he looks allot like Sam Dwyer IMO.

Kirby whilst he looks more like a marking forward who likes to fly at everything he does the most important thing a forward should do, kick goals. And even had some crumbs in his highlights. Looks strong over the ball as well. Something WHE doesn't do enough of and I'm not sure on Brown and Daicos.

I'd argue Brown and Daicos project to be midfielders or mid/fwds as well.

There was a poster earlier from his home town who said he needed to commute 2 hours to get to training and this held him back from having a real crack it. That rings true for me so lets hope a professional environment will iron that out.

We have not had anything like a genuine crumbing, goal kicking forward since the candy man left, (Krakour) so here's hoping Kirby can offer an option in that area.

Blair is more a defensive/tackling/lock-in forward and does not kick anywhere near enough goals, Elliot is more a marking forward and Fas a lead up forward than genuine silky crumbers, neither are that quick.

Kayle is a different type to Krakour but he looks like he reads it off the packs well, gets in good positions, has some toe, hits it hard and has a lethal snap.

Don't know about these guys who come down from the bush and are in poor shape, it is usually a big ask this late to get them to step up and change their ways, I see his as a long shot in this respect. Obviously has talent, so it will come down to how much he wants it.

Cale Hooker, Cale Morton...

They start with C yeah? Think I need to go back and edit my original post.

For the third time the spelling; not how it sounds! Pretty sure he would be the first player whose name is Cale with a K and a Y.

Kirby has already dominated a VFL game so he's one up on Gault.

That's a start.
In Tiger colours , so that takes the gloss of it a bit. Not to mention we have to undo the obvious influence of having Yarran as roll model while he was there.

Hey guys, im originally from the same town as Kayle so spoke to some mates from up that way. Apparently hes only been playing footy for 3 years, truckloads of talent. People do need to realise the travel factor to train with pioneers for the kids from that area does have an impact. As previously mentioned he apparently does enjoy a good time, in saying that the word is he has knuckled down and been training pretty hard recently. Really good kid too apparently. Looking forward to see what he can do in an elite environment

Sometimes it's not so much work ethic as application.

For example, I put in very little effort with most things, except for the things I think are important.

Something like a new job can be a great motivator.

Speaking with Leon Harris on Kirby.
He stayed with him while down for the combine.

Put on 6kg after testing, easily stacks on weight but once he got word of us potentially taking him he has really knuckled down.

Good kid with personality but does love a good time.

Packets of talent and footy is all he has got in life. Ran the 3rd fastest 20m at the combine.

Said if he puts in the hard work and adapts to the AFL training regime he will be a quality player at senior level.

Makes it more impressive imo considering how shite Richmond VFL were this year. The kid nearly single handedly won the game for them vs a finals contender in Sandringham as a tubby junior footballer playing against men.
