KDFL 2014

As a person trying to get Thirds up and running at Murchison in 2015, I am keen to know what the benefits are of the KDFL continuing with Under 18s? In my opinion, dropping the age to Under 17s has quite a few advantages that I feel need to be considered.

*An Under 17 competition means that all players can't legally drink - better chance of influencing a positive culture amongst the group.
*It offers many players coming out of local Under 16 competitions a chance of taking a 'gap' year in the KDFL and then if they feel up to it returning to GVFL as a top age 3rds player.
*Players can feel comfortable competing straight out of Under 14s.
*As Under 18s the only thing we offer different to the GVFL is a much weaker competition.
*Allows younger players to participate - more parents would be keen knowing 18 year olds would not be involved.
* Aligns us with neighbouring district leagues for junior carnivals and interleague games.

I feel the whole Under 18s arrangement is counter-productive. Good 18 year olds will be playing Seniors, while the others can learn the craft in the Reserves which I must say has cleaned up heaps in the last 5 years.
The cut-off date could be flexible, a possible suggestion of being Under 18 on August 31 or KDFL Grand Final day, ensuring that the players remain under-age for the entirety of the season. We could look to manage the over-age permit system if need be to accommodate for players currently in the system.

I like where you're going here KAT but the thing is there are pros and cons for both. A lot of clubs wouldn't have a thirds side if it was u17 and with it being u18 a lot of clubs are still struggling to field a side every week. It really comes down to the fact that there aren't as many kids in our towns anymore and the ones that are there aren't always interested in sport.

It is made even harder as many GVFL clubs now have not one, but TWO Under 16s teams. Perhaps some co-ordination between clubs and leagues where arrangements/alignments are made for the second side to experience club culture through the KDFL.

I have suggested previously that the GVFL run an U16 and U14 comp parallel to their senior fixture. The second side could align with their minor league affiliate and participate as U17s.

Alignments could be arranged between Tatura & Merrigum, Mooroopna & Ardmona, Shepp United & Tallygaroopna - matching jumpers and localities. Others may require a bit more thought. Kyabram & Lancaster, Seymour/St Mary's to Avenel/Nagambie, Shepp Swans? Shepp Bears?

Heck, for what it is worth they could participate in our 3rds comp under their GVFL name. Tat Bulldogs, Mooroopna Cats, Shepp United Demons..... Kyabram Wombats....

We as a Senior league have lots to offer these kids coming through the system, and through club alignment can ensure more of these kids become senior footballers. I can only imagine the number that will throw it in when the two sides try to fill one GVFL Under 18 team. We can provide a satisfying alternative.

It is time to stop working against one another and start working together!

Any really talented thirds getting around ?
Any talented thirds are already playing seniors, most likely doubling up and this is hardly ideal. I put forward a proposal for an U/16 competition a few years ago with an emphasis on getting kids into the senior competition If the KDFL would like to investigate a points system, it might be a way to get more young blokes in seniors and keep locals coming back by allocating minimum points to players for example 20 and under. In liking Jayco's post i'd like to emphasise that there are a lot of kids who don't have a go because they have lazy parents and, sadly, this isn't just limited to football/netball. Anyway, the previous State Government had a big and costly look at country football a few years back and found that everything (as viewed from the ivory tower) was hunky dory, just ask Justin Madden.

Even worse was the alignment between Notre Dame and Shepparton Bears. If I had a dollar for every country kid that has disappeared into the Notre Dame factory and off to a Shepparton Club I could afford to buy the wife new blades for the mower.

A few months ago I posted that the defibrillator from the Rushworth Football/Netball/Cricket/Tennis Recreation Reserve had been stolen. On Saturday night the replacement was unveiled at the drawing of the raffle that funded it. No thanks to the scum that stole it but the local community and visitors were very generous in raising over $3000 in six weeks in the hope that it will never be needed. Well done to Rochester people for their initial response and having an AED on hand.

Stanhope sitting top of the ladder yet only two players in that side and one of those well out of position....

Make sure Poole plays interleague next year then.. I think you guys should read the whole thread and stay on topic.

GrassKat, I really like your thinking. For mine getting rid of the 2nd division in the under 16 competition would solve the issue, as we didn't have a problem with the KDL thirds until the 2nd division diluted the numbers that originally went to the KDL. Unfortunately any solutions that are raised at higher levels are treated as whinging by the distict leagues. I hate school teams at U16 level, terrible as a pathway to club football. Unless your Shepparton Bears.

Mate that team was another poster picking a rough interleague squad from earlier in the year so don't stress about the lack of Stanhope players picked.... Maybe be concerned about the lack of players putting their hand up!! Out of that side of 25 players picked only 11 played.... But it's a non issue now so lets not continue to get to stressed over that topic.... :thumbsu:

How's that bet lookn smoothy :)

The Gum have out:
Josh Pell (oversea)
Brodie Vick (Darwin)
Dan Dryden (inj)
Bob Knowles (inj)
Luke Dowell (inj)

Shaun Stevenson and Josh Stammers just getting going after long term injuries.

Murchison have been without for at least the last three weeks;
Shane Kay
John Shiels
Ben Shiels
Ben Warnett
Lee Warnett
Rhys Monteath
Tim Ewart
Jake Ewart
Craig Thompson (ACL season)
Mitchell Reeves (ACL season)
James Peck (Career ending?)
James Polak
Tom Cullinan

Most of these would be walk up starts, a few would add serious depth to the Reserves. Has been good to put a few wins away whilst being down on personnel.

We've already used 32 players + Reeves, Peck and Thompson who were injured in preseason. Last year we used only 27, two of which only played one game. Last year was quite rare with the side being so settled, this year we had to call on a few reinforcements!
