Its worrying how many of my mates are having really bad feelings about this season and everywhere you read its the same thing...Eagles on the decline.

Keep the faith boys it will be a hard few years but history has shown we always come to the top and our professionalism has no peers in this country of all footy codes.

Stay the course and no negativity just bite ya lips and bare the fact we are not top 4 material at the moment.

We were obviousbly going to be in decline losing Judd and Cousins but i think the worry is that we had an unconvincing win at home over Brisbane who are probably going to be a bottom 8 team.

And then we got beaten off the park against Adelaide...

If we had a big win over Brisbane and just got beaten by Adelaide there would be a lot more confidence around the place, and that was probably more what we were expecting.

In reality though we shouldn't be too far from where we were last year.

We didn't have Cousins for most of the season so he's absence shouldn't be a huge loss from 07.

And Judd was useless for the second half of the season. Whilst you could argue we were ordinary in the second half of the season, we actually started to string some performance together in the last quarter of the season when Judd was still useless or not playing.

The period last year when we were terrible was the third quarter which was not only when Judd was absent, but a host of other players and the pinnacle of which was reached when we played Port Adelaide with only 26 fit players...

And when you consider that our younger players should be a season more experience and stronger we really shouldn't be too far from where we were last year i would've thought...

these first 6 games are crucial and we have to get back on track straight away.

the difference between 4-2 and 3-3 can be far greater than it looks. And any less than that puts the season straight on the wrong foot.

I have faith but i'm not delusional. You can't lose chick, cousins and judd and be a better team.
we were always going to be a poorer team than 2007 but as i stated above i don't think we should be that far from where we were last year.

But these first two results have, obviousbly, not been great at all.

But a couple of wins on the trot and suddenly the Adelaide debacle will be forgotten. Don't even want to think of the alternative.

everyone reads the paper too much. actually i read the paper, but does anyone actually take is seriously?

I have been worried all week since last saturday also, not that we lost but that our forward line was horrible and despite Cox smashing in the hitouts we still got smashed. But i am reserving writting them off as a top 4-6 chance untill after we play sydney in 2 weeks. If we are 1-3 at that stage then my faith may begin to drop off.

I'm a realist, we have had the same weaknesses for some years, and been able to win games due to our expectional midfield. Winning games takes the pressure up and no doubt covers cracks which are exposed.

However now we don't have the same talent in the midfield, hence why we're loosing games and those weaknesses (Staker, Stenglein ect) are now being exposed.

We have three premiership cups, have missed the fianls only a couple of times and have had two brownlow medalists and two norm smith medalists, in a relatively short history, since 1987. The mob down the road don't have a lot to show since entering the comp. in 1995, a sobering thought perhaps before the Derby regardless of the result on Saturday. :D

make that 4....

Matera, Kempy, Judd and Embles :thumbsu:

Its the natural cycle under the AFL's equalisation policy. A few years at the top, a few years at the bottom.
With our young squad it may well be better for us to have a horrible season, finish 9-12th, but develop some players along the way and answer some questions about our structure, than to have maybe topped up in the preseason & had a mediocre tilt at the premiership in 2008.

I'd really hate if we got to the end of this season and still not have any clue as to our forward structure, who will play CHB, who is the future of our midfield, etc. It will just be a wasted year if that's what happens.

Harden up mate. Geelong were 1-3 early last year. It needs 8-10 games to see how she goes. 1-3 is just a challenge. To which we would respond.

its only round 3 there is still plenty of time in the season to get a top 4
position, having said that we will win today and be in a great position to challenge for the 8.

Were not top 4 by a long shot, after the Derby today it looks like there is only a few teams we may be able to beat but as the topic states....keep the faith and don't fall off the WCE we're rebuilding.

Not necessarily rebuilding - getting our structure right is probably more accurate.

If it takes a season - so be it. I can wait.

The encouraging thing in this season is the kids are showing something :thumbsu:

I am keeping the faith, but the loss hurts like hell.

Freo have no away ground disadvantage in Derbies. They played well, got it to their best forward and they won. That's fair enough.

We played with good effort. We will get more systematic. We have to find a new (better) way to move the ball, and to do this players need to pass to the right 'go to' link guys. only need 4 or 5.

(I think we have three/four: Hurn, Kerr and Ebert, maybe Le Cras. Dont know what's up with Braun, Nico or Staker). Plus two sensible small forwards = Mckinley and ???.

Let it come into flower.

It hurts like hell, yes. But really we have the potential there to go top 4 this season. We arent playing that bad, skills are letting us down.
Zackly. And the kinks and stick points will get a dose of the good oil: Confidence, soon enough. Might be a few more close losses in store yet though. Whereas last 2 years we had a lot a close wins...and played with self-belief.

As it gels, we will put together some winning streaks
