Out of interest KM - would you asses O'Rourke as worth a pick 3/4 selection?

How would you rate him against Viney?

O'Rouke for me is more of a 5-8 type selection. I'd have difficulty selecting him while Whitfield/Toumpas/Viney/Wines/Grundy are still available but still worth considering for Melbourne.

Viney/O'Rouke are different players. O'Rouke is probably slightly quicker/more skilled but I'd take Viney first for his inside ball winning ability and rare attack on the footy.

Hey Knightmare,

I have a question that has been bugging me. This picture was 12 months ago, but Toby Greene still looks like this.
GREENE-Toby-246B.jpg

Is it possible that due to his 12 year old looks that players are scared to tackle him because they think he is a child and that is why he gets so much possession?

Ok not serious. I'm an essendon supporter, tell me how Joe Daniher has been going since the U18 championships, I haven't heard anything, surely he must be playing some games somewhere?

Daniher is training with the Essendon, is being home schooled to fit in with his training.

He'll play if he's fit next year.

Knightmare love your work as always mate great write up.How do you see the tigers draft options going.Should be a top 10 pick and 2 second rd picks.I think the top 10 pick is best player at that pick and the net 2 picks our needs.

Toby strikes a pretty intimidating presence out on the field. Just goes harder than the next guy and if he keeps doing that few will go near the kid.

Since the u18 champs Joe has been playing for the Calder Cannons and has continued his strong form. Was well held last week by Tanner Smith (North Ballarat Rebels - probably the better shutdown defender in this draft) but otherwise he has continued to show plenty and demonstrate how much of a contested marking force he is in the front half.

The one area needing work still is his set shot kicking for goal. He can kick some rippers from more difficult positions and has great penetration on his kick but is still missing too many set shots he should be converting but there is still plenty of time to clean this up and many who have had set shot goalkicking difficulties as juniors have radically turned things around so I wouldn't be too concerned.

I see things pretty similar. I'd expect best available in the first round. One of Kennedy or Garlett should be available with Plowman probably the other option well worth considering.

In the second round I'd expect probably one KPP, one mid. As mids Jason Pongracic and Rory Atkins would probably appeal if available. As talls Tanner Smith and Marco Paparone are two who could be available, or if looking for an immediate KPP Tom Lee could as a mature ager be an option even if early-mid 2nd round is probably a fraction early.

KM, any thoughts on the other 2 father son eligible bombers? Williams (son of daisy) and Fields (son of Neville).
I think essendon are pretty keen on williams as he has played for bendigo as the 23rd man, not so sure on fields, although he seems like a good rookie selection

Poor Tom. You had him being drafted inside the top 20 just a week ago.

At least he wasn't as unlucky as old Ashley Hansen, he is nowhere to be seen anymore. :p

Essendon have a lot of father son kids this year. Jydon Neagle is another.

Williams has shown some through the midfield and down back for Eastern Ranges. Looks like a late/rookie option and I expect Essendon will probably take him.

Fields is playing up in QLD. He is a tall athletic back flanker. Is those few years older but has been playing some good footy. Might get considered as a rookie.

There is no greater drop than going dropping from pick 96 overall to not being among the top 97 selections..
There won't be that many selections on draft day and I only discussed Hansen as a situational rookie type selection and I still think he can be this (the implication being he likely won't get re-drafted but for a 2 year rental type is no worse than Orren Stephenson).

Thoughts on Myke Cook? Not one I've seen more than a game of. Apparently Richmond are keen.

Saw him play last week v Collingwood VFL in the online VFL broadcast. One of the better VFL prospects.
High production outside mid. Has some pace. Tackling ability good. Can finish around goal. Like Ed Curnow and now Tom Lee it looks like it feels like Cook is another guy Adelaide might have let go a little too early.

just out of interest, where would you have jack martin in your power rankings? and what would say gold coast have to give up for him? surely pick 2 on its own is too much for an underage and somewhat flakey/flashy player.

Does this show different matches to the ABC TV one?

I'd have Martin at around 5 overall in my power rankings (note: Jaeger O'Meara is among those top 5).

Jack Martin will likely command a selection around pick 4 overall or equivalent.

If Gold Coast want Martin the options are either pick 2 for Martin with GWS trading some other assets in return to be decided or otherwise Gold Coast can package some players looking to move South (say Caddy and Toy if they were open to a move to GWS).

My feeling is probably Melbourne with pick 4 will end up landing Martin with some of those later 1st round selections likely trades for more mature players.

On the VFL website last Sunday there was a broadcast of another live match (different to the 1:00 Saturday broadcast) - just as a trial. As I understand it there will be another match live on the website this Sunday also. Worth a look if a VFL fan or the game is of interest.

I was hoping O'Rourke would still be there at our pick approx 12. He is having a good year and it is now looking more unlikely by the day. Maybe an Atley slide could happen again:D

Knight, for your 2013 rankings, where do you rate Lloyd Perris? Just got selected for the Tier 2 AIS squad after winning the Ling Medal last year.

The talk is Sydney will take him next year through the NSW/ACT program and can use that final national draft selection on him being in the Sydney program.

Unsure if Perris has played this year but my understanding is that he is injured - knee? Maybe some of the other NSW watchers know more but having not played in the u18 champs I haven't seen him live this year but he will be one I'll be watching closely next year.

I'd like to see more of him before I put him in my top 30 but I suspect he will be right in there this time next year assuming healthy. One to get excited about for Sydney.

Had a Knee Reconstruction end of last year.

What about in relation to the academy programs being subjected to a bidding system (a la F/S picks)? Could you see the Swans having to use their first rounder on him, or can they still let him pass through til the end?

Perris was signed under the defunct Scholarship program, so if the Swans want him and he agrees, he can bypass the draft and be added directly to the list.

Has played 13 Senior games this year for St George in the Sydney Premier Division and named in the "Bests" 6 times. Hope we see him play as a Reserves toppy next year!

Surely the basis of trading is to improve your list by either filling a specific need, or by getting something for less than its value.

I guess what I struggle with is that if a players "value" is pick 4, what is the actual benefit in trading pick 4 for him? GCS trading pick 2 for the Mini Draft selection seems like a nice little gift to GWS, unless they specifically want Martin and see him filling a need they don't have any cover for.

As RTTF identified as a member of the NSW/ACT program he can just be added with the final draft selection to the Sydney list.

Hey KM, when's the next likely update going to be? Just interested to see what you are going to do now that there has been a bit of movement with the ladder.

I updated my predicted ladder order a week or two ago but with some of the upsets happening this weekend I'll probably just wait until finals unless I find more time to add some more profiles.

Even though I have Martin down at 5 in my power rankings you have to consider who I have in front of him. Whitfield who will go no.1 overall. O'Meara who is already on an AFL list. Then Daniher and Viney who will go F/S with Daniher coming into the draft later so a case could be made that Martin if in this years draft could be the no.2 overall selection which doesn't make that trade of pick 4 trade look so bad.
Additionally for say Melbourne Martin would be a very good fit. Melbourne are lacking pace and spread through the midfield and Martin could add plenty in this regard so for mine he ticks both boxes.

You have to weigh up whether you want to wait that full year. But I don't mind taking a Martin or Hogan a year early. I'd much rather have a player developing on an AFL list than in the u18s. Just being around senior AFL footballers and getting to train, prepair and learn the game in this environment is a massive edge to have over the others coming through the u18s.

KM, thoughts on who might big on Joe Daniher?
I realize that its a long shot but the worse we get, the further we slide and the less clubs they are beneath us. What's the exposed form re bidding? , the only similar case I can think of is Cordy, and even then he only went second round
