Having left the draft with no specialist KPDs whilst leaving Clancy Dennis and even Gabriel Stumpf on the shelf, the club must have a plan for the key defensive posts. If so, what is it?

-Gov is still in the top 5 KPDs in the competition but could retire at the end of 2025 or when the last of his 24 ribs is finally broken

-Edwards has shown an ability to intercept but is slow, accelerates poorly and hasn’t stayed on the park

-Bazzo has had an awful run of injuries and personal challenges and is yet to show anything at AFL level

-Jamieson whilst athletic has a body that keeps letting him down and again hasn’t done anything at AFL level to suggest a contract extension is on the cards

-Archer Reid and Shanahan are very promising KPFs which are hard to find and it would be a shame to switch them into defence with so much forward potential

-Sandy Brock is no guarantee to be offered a contract during the SSP and at best looks a depth player

I hope and pretty sure we have all out eggs in C Curtin basket.

I dont have faith. In saying that we don't have a plan for anything.

We don't have a ruck in development
We dont have mids in development besides from Harley and crook Hew

We should hopefully get a hint once the players start to train in their lines.

I fully expect(hope) at least 1 of our KPFs to train in the backline at least a little bit in 2025. Archer Reid or Allen the more likely candidates imo.

Between Maric, Bazzo and any potential KPF swapping roles we probably have the 2nd/intercepting KPD sorted, its really just the full back/200cm KPD type we need more depth in imo.

I think the Hawks F1 is most certainly reserved for Cody based on his projection and he’s a smart pick but who plays in the defensive spine whilst he develops?

Maric's training with the backs and outside of his draft season, played in the backline through juniors.

Also is 1cm shorter than Gov, is an elite kick and reads the play very well.

Hopefully he's heir-apparent for Gov, Edwards actually can stay on the park and Bazzo comes on.

Surprisingly, Jamieson actually looked quite good back there early in the season so if he can stay on the park, that's another option.

Our plan it to accept that we are in a rebuilding phase, our understudies are inexperienced as a result of having two elite KPDs for many years, and we're going to just need to throw game time at some young kids.

We have plenty of KP size talent that can be swung through defence, we just need to experiment, develop, and give it time. If we get a few bags kicked on us, big deal.

Who was our last 200cm KPD?
Barrass??
the full back/200cm KPD type
I dont mean the guy has to be 200cm, but they have to be able to play on 200cm forwards. I was talking about a role we need filled.

None of our KPDs other than Edwards or Gov are really big enough.
I dont count Jamo as an actual option yet, havent seen enough

TB can't play on big forwards. He managed to get bags kick on him by spuds like Cox and Ratagulea which got us knocked out of 2019 and 2020 finals. I would trust Gov 1 on 1 more than him (TB is an elite interceptor though).

Midfield pressure is the key to defence. The next is having elite readers of the play who can impact the contest. Our defence will improve as our overall pressure improves.

But to answer the question, we have plenty of talls. A Reid and Barnett will likely get some exposure. Hopefully Edwards gets a run at it and both Waterman and Allen are handy enough if we need them.

McIntosh, Jacovich, McGovern and Barrass all spent a load of time playing CHF before moving down back.

I cannot see Jamieson being on the list much longer as his body cannot cope

Allen may well find his knees are better when playing CHB

Maric is looking a gem

Archer looks like he goes in and out of the game as a forward and hence why a few of us think he might be better served down back

Barnett - ruck looks less likely so I’d like to see him as the 200 cm full back

We have plenty of tall options. We can relax

TB can play lockdown but can get goals kicked on him too by trying to play his own way by intercept and allow his man plenty of space. Gov has the same issue but doesn’t play anywhere enough on the guns where he has been exposed badly. Buddy’s done it a few times to Gov.

Personally I think Zach Reid should be a huge watch. 202cm, will be 23 at the end of next year and with his little brother on our list there is an obvious attraction for both club and player. His most recent pectoral injury was just unlucky so if he’s past his back and hamstring issues I see no reason we shouldn’t reach out to his management. If he can’t get on the park and is delisted he’s a player I’d be ok offering a short contract to weighing up risk and reward.

People are getting too fixated on whether a player played forward or back in their junior years. Talent managers emphasise to KP players the importance of being able to adapt to both roles. Just because someone played as a key forward in underage footy doesn’t mean they’re less capable as a key defender or lacking in the necessary skills compared to those who played key defence. We have plenty of KPPs in our squad; we just need to invest the time and effort to develop them.

Maybe the plan is not to overly rely on big KPDs but more mobile defenders who can run off their opponent which will be dependent on pressure further up the ground

Like how Richmond played

Rance (195cm) wasn’t tall and Grimes (193cm) who anchored the defence after Rance did his knee was shorter. And Balta is 194cm

At Melbourne, May (193cm) and Lever (195cm) aren’t tall either

McQualter is on record as saying he’s bringing in a lot of what he’s learned at those two clubs so perhaps he’s looking at a more swarming intercept style defence not unlike our own Weagles web

Suspect we’ll get a better idea post Christmas when the players start training defensive setups which hasn’t been done as yet. Hopefully we get a look at Barnett and Maric as defenders then. And Edwards provided his foot injury responds to rest

Strong chance that Sandy Brock is officially added to the list by then as well - only a hunch but I think he gets the nod ahead of Burgiel

Are you sure that Gov has only 24 ribs?

Brock is the right age in the right position, I just haven’t seen enough of him to comment other than to say it’s good he’s a left footer. I’d like to monitor Zach Reid, draft Cody and chase Dan the year after with a view to him playing KPD or midfield. If we do get Chad and the above our best 22 looks very competitive with a nicely balanced age profile.

Who is this though, that is the question.

Harry Edwards and Jaimison.

Or Archer Reid.

Maric at 196cm is training in defense.

Ginbey and Bo are 190cm plus half backs with pace to intercept.

Hough is taller than both.

We get the manic pressure right up the ground then defending becomes a new ball game.
