Lachie Hunter - Alleged bloody idiot

Lachies version of events was never going to stand up to any sort of scrutiny. Im glad that he has accepted full responsibility for the stupidity of his actions on the night.

As for Gowers, I suspect his punishment is predicated on the fact that he initially denied Lachie was in his house when the police arrived.

Smith should never have been fined and its good to hear that the fine has been dropped.

Time to move on.

Incredibly soft and embarrassing by the club. Should of gotten 20 games. There is no excuse for drink driving. Disgusted by the club on being soft on Hunter.

20 games???

- Vice captaincy gone

- 4 match suspension

- Club imposed fine

That’s a huge punishment.

On top of the respect he’s lost from the club, players, fans and media etc.

He’s copped his whack.

No it’s soft. We as a society are incredibly soft on drink driving. It kills and is incredibly selfish. HE COULD OF KILLED SOMEONE. Do people understand that? HE COULD OF TAKEN A LIFE OF AN INNOCENT PERSON. Enough is enough.

Agree he's copped his right whack for doing a dumb thing (or several).

I did feel for him on the Club video tho.

I also liked that the Club said he had access to assistance that he didn't take advantage of.

I'm more annoyed at Gowers now - I think he's lost my trust, but I guess Lachie dragged him into it, so.....

Anyway, onward & upward & let's see if Lachie can redeem himself on & off the field in future.

So we slap him with a 100 game ban and solve society’s problems?

He will receive the same treatment from police as you or I would. He also gets disciplined by his employer and shamed in the media.

He’s made a terrible mistake. One I’m afraid lots of people have made. The punishment by the club is about right.

You’re point is valid...but I think your rage is misdirected.

Your more annoyed by Gowers than the person who could of killed someone? That is insanity.

No it doesn’t solve a society problem but it makes a statement. Peter Gordon should stand front and centre and say “we as a club think society have been too soft on drink driving but here at the Western Bulldogs are taking a stand. We also call on other clubs to take a stand with us to help curb this problem that kills people.” We need a powerful person or group to take a stand.

So Lachie Hunters gets punished for the whole of society’s ills?

Could be that he never contacted the club, as they have been instructed to do.

What did Gowers do that breached the code of conduct?

Disappointed in his choice to drink alcohol? Thats a shit statement by Bains.

The fines and suspension to Hunter are about right
At the first hint of trouble call the club for advice. It's drummed into each and every player. Providing frothys to a clearly agitated Hunter was not the smartest move.

Sorry but this is absolute bollox. We’re a sporting club not a political party. It’s completely inappropriate for us to be leading the charge on societal problems like this. I understand your message but talk to your local MP if you feel that strongly about it.

Where did you read that the fine has been dropped.

I'm ok with all of the sanctions handed down to Hunter. The only thing I would have added was that he had to pay Smith's fine.

I'd hope for the sake of player relationships, he's already volunteered to do so. If I were Bailey, I'd be filthy at having that fine. Especially since given he's on the initial preset 2 year contract, it's a pretty significant amount of money for him

Should have been stripped naked and placed in the stocks in Fed Square. Get a grip.

Should have, not should of

Perhaps you've been personally touched by a road death, mate. I have too - not immediate family but close enough to understand the terrible impact it has. It was a young person full of talent and promise as well. So I have a sense of where you're coming from.

The problem is we as a society send mixed messages about alcohol use and DUI. We'll be getting serious about it when governments start saying you must have ZERO alcohol in your system before you're allowed behind a steering wheel. As it is we are operating on a risk-managed basis where some alcohol consumption is OK and it's fairly long odds against getting caught if you're over. I can't see it changing any time soon. The current regime is already saving hundreds of lives from alcohol related road deaths but obviously not every life. I remember the time 50 years ago when Victoria had 1034 road deaths in one year ... "Declare War on 1034" was a massive campaign. Alcohol had been a big part of that. Last year the Victorian toll was down to 353 so we've come a fair way.

My point is that Hunter has erred but neither he nor the club should be carrying the can for a systemic problem. As it is he'll be wearing a huge cost, much more than most who are charged with drink driving.

Hunter wouldn't have actually been drinking at Gowers house. That was just a made up excuse to explain why he was over the limit when he got the breathe test.

You do realise the football club is not a court of law and he will face criminal charges in addition to any punishment the club imposes?
