Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

Probably should have won one more game out of Arizona, SF and Jacksonville but still, I'm happy to take 8-8 and the improvement we have shown. Campbell just needs to work on his relationship with the receivers and we may have something here. On another note Cable may be fired:

I only support this if it means we keep Hue Jackson either as OC or hire him as head coach. Otherwise surely Cable has done enough to get us on the right path. Guess it depends on how much was him and how much was Jackson.

Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

I think we SHOULD have definitely beaten...

Arizona, SF, Jacksonville, Miami, and Houston.

All those games we were leading at the half, or were in position to win the game, but faltered.

2010 was a major letdown for me. People can look at 8-8 like "wow we did well compared to the 5-11 type seasons we've been suffering for 7 years", but this team was talented and capable to go 11-5 or better and have a division title.

Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

Agree with most of that Double G.

The Jaguar and Texas games in particular.

You have been waiting longer and gone through the pre-Russell day's. Those of us without that baggage:) have a little more patience.

Really happy with the pressure on QB's from the Raider defense for the most part of the season. Also hope Jason Campbell stay's the starter as he works well with the attack.

First time since 76 a clean division sweep, very positive really.

Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

Cable no longer coach, hope Davis has Hue Jackson lined up. Players gave Cable their support and it seemed most fans too. Tough gig this NFL coaching.

This article is spot on...

Raiders players say they like Tom Cable. If so, they should have played for him at critical junctures of the season, which would have saved his job.

There were times when it seemed the Raiders were on the verge of a breakthrough. The first came when they entered their bye week on a real high, three straight wins: a 59-14 extravaganza against Denver, a 33-3 whipping of Seattle and, most important, a 23-20 win at home against the division-leading Kansas City Chiefs.

But after the bye, they went to Pittsburgh and laid an egg, a 33-3 loss to the Steelers. Well, OK, the Steelers are one of the top-tier teams in the league and playing at home. But the next Sunday, at home against a Miami team that finished 7-9, the Raiders lost again, this time 33-17, and it wasn’t that close. They had the ball for only slightly more than 18 minutes.

If they were trying to save Cable’s job, they weren’t doing a very good job of it. Then, they rebounded with a 28-13 win over the Chargers in San Diego, probably their best game of the year.

But once again, they blew their playoff chances by losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars, a .500 team, on the road in a game they led late. That effectively ended their playoff chances.

The fact that they finished strong against the Chiefs in Kansas City is meaningless. The Chiefs had nothing to play for, having clinched the division title.

Nonetheless, the Raiders thumped their chests as if they had really accomplished something. They bragged about their 6-0 record against AFC West rivals, which, of course, meant that they were 2-8 against teams outside the division. Maybe they don’t understand that they have to play well against nondivision teams, too.

They finished at 8-8, which was an accomplishment only because the team has been so wretched since 2002, setting an NFL record with seven straight seasons of double-digit losses.

This improvement came almost entirely because of good organizational decisions, both on players and the hiring of Hue Jackson.

It’s always difficult to tell which decisions are strictly Al Davis’ and which are made by others in the organization, but the trade for quarterback Jason Campbell and the hiring of Jackson were strictly Davis’ moves.
Campbell isn’t a great quarterback, but he’s a competent one, which JaMarcus Russell was not.

Jackson’s play-calling was a big improvement over Cable’s in the previous year, with an imagination that often fooled other teams.

Their draft provided considerable help. The first two picks, linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive lineman Lamarr Houston, were solid from the start. Jared Veldheer, a big man from a small school, was a very pleasant surprise, filling the vital left offensive tackle position. He should be a good one for a long time.

It took Jacoby Ford some time to break into the lineup, but when he did, he was a huge factor, with his kickoff returns and receiving. He has the speed of Darius Heyward-Bey, with the pass-catching ability that DHB lacks.

Cable contributed nothing to any of this. If Davis decides to end his head coaching career, as has been widely speculated, the Raiders will be better off.

Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

Jackson will be offered the HC position, word was that 49ers were serious in actually offering him the HC role instead of just using him as the Rooney Rule.

So it was either a smokescreen and we got happy feet and pulled the trigger way too early, or it was a semi logical understandable move by the organisation (haha doubt it), they loved the improvement that the team showed under Cable especially the 6-0 in the division, but the feeling was that we should of been in the playoffs and the QB carousel early in the season hurt us.

Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

Hue Jackson may not be HC.

John Herrera said yesterday when announcing that the Raiders had granted the Niners permission to interview Jackson...."we're happy for him".

Dunno, there's rumor it could be Harbaugh in Oakland. Or maybe Gruden. It could be Jackson. We'll just have to wait and see. There's gonna be a lot of rumor/reports. Best to just wait for the actual word.

Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

Seems Harbaugh and Jackson are gonna be the HC of Niners and Raiders, whichever which way that goes. Harbaugh at Niners, Jackson at Raiders. Or Jackson at Niners, Harbaugh at Raiders.

But it would be a good safe bet to say Harbaugh-Niners, Jackson-Raiders.

I believe this is quite apt.

Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

I had a very real and detailed dream last night.
The Raiders were in the playoffs next season.
We were playing the Ravens, Jason Campbell was the QB.
We were down 7-0 early. Went 3 and out. Then recovered the punt. Then there was a bunch of 1st downs into their redzone and goalline. Finally we score.
The dream ended at half-time with us up something like 23-20, but looking good. Then there was some big incident, not sure what, seemed like a security threat or something, the game delayed for a long time before the game would resume. Then i woke up.

Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

I like the way Mr.Davis chews people up, spits them out and they become cleaner :thumbsu:

Re: Oakland Raiders: "The Black Hole"

No mention of this line in the press release?

“The fire in Hue will set a flame that will burn for a long time in the hearts and minds of the Raider football team and the Raider Nation.” - Al Davis
Sounds more like somthing some communist dictator would say than a pro football team :p
