Laura Kane - Does Not Impress Me At All !!

I don't pretend to know what the inner workings are at the AFL but since Kane has taken charge of the umpiring, mro and rules I've never been more confused and frankly enraged watching games. Shit decisions heavily influencing games and she comes out and signs off on it like she's passing wind. Every time she speaks I just hear political spin, Dillon and her haven't had a good start imo.

What are the prerequisite qualifications and experience for her job? The most senior administration job in footy. Surely you've had decades of experience in the afl with strong established relationships.

It all feels very reactive and chaotic at the moment like she wants to make a big dramatic stand.

Seems like she got no idea about clubs stock piling for future father/sons and NGA players for the past few years and has decided to jump all in without club consultation.
But also , typically being a noobie to her position, wants to leave her stamp otherwise will be seen as a bit wimpy in her role . She needs to go and do some research if she wants to survive in the big league

She’s out of her depth.
It started when she fronted the media weekly on contentious umpiring decisions. Absolutely no need for someone at her level to be involved in the minutiae, but obviously felt it would give her good media presence early.

Changing the draft points system mid year is just reactionary and amateur. While it’s ultimately a good thing, not giving clubs notice to plan for accumulating picks to grab their players is unprofessional. It reeks of making a decision without communicating to stakeholders nor thinking of the practical ramifications.

They need to look outside the AFL system when putting people into senior operations roles. Her lack of practical experience outside of AFL is worrying.

Oh my god, carton stockpiled 4th rd picks! What tragedy, 4th round picks!

If anything this highlighted ridiculousness of collecting late picks to bid for higher quality players.

All self interest. I am ok with discounts being applied but not the gaming that goes on to split for all shitty picks. It was always going to end.

I am also ok with clubs having fs while others don’t. That’s just bad luck. Not like fs’s are free although people like to act out like they are.

Based on history, doing exactly what the CEO tells you. This is also the same for the AFL Commission and the Club Presidents, who lost all their power when Vlad ran the AFL and financially took over a third of the clubs and ensured the other Presidents and the Commissioners had access to the boys club where everyone who behaved made millions for themselves.

There is no oversight and the CEO does whatever the CEO wants.

This is what happens when you have people who are lawyers or who haven't played AFL in the highest level running a sports code. Absolute clown-show.

Every thing that Laura and/or Andrew says is complete and utter garbage. The game is in a very bad shape.

IF Brendan Gale was in charge the game would be in a much better place now.

It’s not bad luck. It’s playing to the rules of the system.

And yes, the franchise clubs and Carlton will be fine.

But that’s not the point. An organisation that turns over a billion dollars a year has someone in charge of their product operations who has little idea how to communicate to those at club level.

Changing the rules are fine, as long as the stakeholders are given the chance to adapt to them and it is communicated in proper course.

This just reeks of unprofessionalism. I can see exactly how this happened. When GC got 4 players last year that should have been first rounders for chump change the AFL reacted and this is the result of it. They have obviously made a call without telling the clubs- this is why they have spoken out to journos.

My fear is that the AFL will become so authoritarian that it will sideline and blacklist journalist with opposing viewpoints, i.e. you have to agree with us or we're not listening to you. Very narcissistic and toxic.

This is the latest example of the league’s amateur approach to governance. We have to go back…oh just a few weeks, to the change in interpretation of HTB mid-season, to see the last example.

The competitive balance review is sorely needed and it’s been going on for a long time, yet they still mucked up the execution. It’s just bizarre how poorly the league manages these things. Give clubs at least one off-season before implementing the changes.

With all that said, let’s hope these changes make the system simpler and fairer. Paying fair price for tied draft prospects is fundamental. If they get that right, I can forgive the poor execution, even if clubs won’t.

Pure deflection and pure deliberate ignorance by Kane here in her interview with Wheatley about Tracs injury.
Argues 21.5 minutes of him back out there in pure pain and looking literally grey is just a matter of “minutes and seconds”

Yeah this was a particularly pathetic politicians response from her. "Don't trust your eyes, ears and basic common sense, trust what we say! Don't worry about the real outcome (spleen surgery), we have a process and that process worked."

I don't know why, just had a flashback.

For Gough's Sake, Laura!

The AFL's goal is to have the sport played by males and females in equal numbers by 2030.

They're going to need a lot more girls and women taking up umpiring in order to accommodate such an increase in participation. Wouldn't really be fair to put that responsibility solely on the guys, would it.

And btw having visible examples of female umpires will help drive that much needed increase.
What a difference a bit of context makes. If she (Kane) articulated it (diversity comment) like this, the thread would be half it's size.

I mean all the clubs could just come together and outright reject the ideas put forth.

Time the clubs took back some power from the AFL cronies.
Issue is clubs like St Kilda complaining about inequality to mask their ineptitude won't support that. They want to be the victims here to try and get access to more top end talent
