Laura Kane - Does Not Impress Me At All !!

My fear is that the AFL will become so authoritarian that it will sideline and blacklist journalist with opposing viewpoints, i.e. you have to agree with us or we're not listening to you. Very narcissistic and toxic.

Where have you been the last 20 years lol

It sure wasn't AFL accredited journos that broke the Essendon doping scandal despite Healy and no doubt a lot of others knowing about it

Absolute disaster

Get Gordon Ramsay to do the position, at least it would be more entertaining.
Or maybe get a better Kane to do the job.

I am strongly in favour of changing the draft points weighting etc (see attached document which I posted on Jan 8 this year) but if I was in the decision-making position that Kane is, I'd certainly have handled it way more professionally than she has.

I would have called a meeting of all club presidents in the recent off-season where I would have outlined the upcoming changes. Added to that, I would have outlined a timeline for the changes with most of them coming into practice in 2025 so that clubs were not disadvantaged based on making decisions under the current system.

Look, this isn't rocket science either, it's called being professional and most importantly, transparent.

Clubs will accept changes if they apply equally to everyone as well as addressing a bigger issue that no-one is content with.

How these buffoons got their jobs mystifies me, how they can stay in the job is totally mesmerising !!

I mean, more than usual.

Someone is going to suffer when they introduce. Unfortunately, it may be Blues, Lions and Tigers this time.

Play on.
Actually if done professionally with all clubs adequately advised with notice, a lot of that can be mitigated.

The disgrace is giving clubs a set of rules they make decisions on years in advance and then months out from where it is impactful still teasing some sort of idea to possibly change it.

No not play on, easy for you to say as it doesn't impact your club. In fact, you shouldn't even get to comment.

The points system doesn’t impact the Hawks moving forward for any academy or F/S kids?

John C Reilly Seriously GIF

Easy for you to say as you know what the rules will be going forward just like to rest of the comp. Bit hard to plan for next year when you already have made decisions 7 months ago and now get told those plans are out the window.

Do you honestly believe Richmond for example would have traded in 3rd round picks like we did if we knew the rules were changing? Laura Kane is a lying piece of crap.

I’m def not disagreeing with you that the implementation could have been handled better.

We don’t know the conversations that have happened behind closed doors, just the spin clubs are putting out to their mouth-for-hire, Tom Morris.

The way the AFL operate and from the commentary footage we all saw from the weekend, her body language was for all to see. i have no doubt in my mind what happened.

  • Last year in the lead up to the draft, it was flagged that Gold Coast will get some top quality kids for little
  • AFL does nothing
  • AFL draft happens, Gold Coast gets those kids for nothing, Eagles 2nd round gets pushed back to pick 30 as all the F/S & academy picks push back picks
  • Clubs in the draft plan for next year as that's what professional clubs should be doing, draft ends.
  • AFL have no future planning and never saw this coming, realising they ****ed up
  • AFL say they are really busy right now, so these things take time to implement
  • Nothing gets done for 7 months, they are too busy chasing their own tails over incompetent umpiring and head clashes
  • Rumours occur last week of possible changes this year
  • Laura Kane then sits in the commentary box and lies through her teeth about clubs knowing these changes were possible of happening in a few months time.
  • AFL wondering why so many clubs & supporters are so pissed off now that once again this organisation have decided to fast track a solution hoping to quick fix an issue.

Bunch of amateurs that get paid a truck load of money but have no foresight on any issue in the game right now.

Last years AFL draft was so utterly incompetent with the first pick in the second round drifted out from 19 to 30.

The Draft Point index so far out of whack that 3rd & 4th round picks which have virtually nil value with only 60 or so players drafted each are traded all over the place so a team can get a very highly rated player for well below market value. This has been going on for several years with no action

The Free Agency compensation where the new CBA money increase was not factored into the calculation leading to 3 players being overcompensated with 1st round draft picks

Her comment, the draft is complicated, not compromised.

She is in charge of both umpiring and on game activities as well as how the offseason works with trading, drafting.

IMO get a spreadsheet warrior/committee in to run all the trading drafting rules. 1-2 weeks before the trade period / draft season the competition committee releases the rules for the next 12 months. Hell they can release: confirmed rule changes or potential rule changes on a list and give to all clubs and the public.

1 week Prior to 2023 trade/draft period

Confirmed
A flattening of the points curve for academy/father son for 2024 draft. People have known about this for years

Potential
Picks after X are worth 0 points
Require a pick within 15 draft position slots to match a bid on a 2024 academy/FS prospect

They need people working on these mechanisms as their job, not just have a meeting every 2-3 months after you have gotten through an umpiring and rules crisis!

Just like Opening Round, just like everything else that the AFL does - on the fly. Amateur Hour

I asked Jon Ralph directly if all clubs knew of these changes before last year's draft and this was his reply

Now my question to Laura Kane is, how can you introduce a change if its not known that all clubs were told?

Also, which clubs were told? Was it West Coast and Freo who flogged us their picks?

Talk about amateur hour down at the AFL.

She continues to put herself out there and embarrass herself.

Seriously, “because the umpire didn’t say anything after the whistle the players were confused so it can’t be a 50m penalty”

Ludicrous. What else would that whistle have meant, and in any situation how would a whistle give the collingwood players any right to run in and tackle?

They are so scared of admitting fault that they are willing to twist almost anything to justify their bs. Even the fact that they admit umpire fault for something different, it’s manipulative, and gives a false sense of accountability

"You can see on the vision, Bailey Scott takes the mark, the umpire blows his whistle and one of two calls could be made. It could be play on immediately, or it could be stand, which would indicate the mark had been paid.“

That is the most laughable explanation I’ve ever heard. The stand call has never indicated that a mark has been paid, the whistle does. They will only say stand when a player has made the choice to either man the mark, or if the player hasn’t immediately started to back out of the 5m zone to force them to stand.

We’ve seen plenty of 50’s that have occurred before the stand call has been made anyways from players going over the mark. This is just patently wrong as an explanation

I wish this was true, but I really think the AFL couldn't care less.
