Hi Folks,

If going for just the league win, is my understanding correct in that you dont have to have a full team picked until round 3?

i.e. you could pick your team rafter round 2 when you know which players are going to go up in value the most, and by waiting till the round 3 teams are announced you know which rookies are going to be the best of the cash cows etc? also covers you a bit in terms of any long term injuries sustained in the first couple of rounds.

Sure it is not going to guarantee you win the league, but is will be an advantage.

Is there anything to stop you from doing this? do the points earned in the first couple of rounds count for anything or does the system boot out all incomplete teams at the round 1 lockout?

thoughts?

definitly a stratergy, in my league with mates we must have our teams locked for round 1 to be eleigable for the cash prize.
And no i dont think there is anything from stopping you doing that.

Leagues with vacant spots will be auto filled after rd 1 lockout i believe....and fairly sure if u enter a league but do not fill ur team u will be removed after rd 1 lockout

I think there's no difference between league and points. You need your locks in up front and then mid tier that you will want to trade up during the season from rookies etc,.

I go by this adage. A $94K can get up to $250K quite quickly. Trade him for another rookie and you make around $150K. So a trade is worth $150K.

Let's say you fancy Ablett but think his price will drop, okay don't buy him up front. Maybe you buy him in week 6 for $70K less. Well, to me, you wasted a $150K value trade to save $70K.

At the bottom of the Supercoach Leagues page, it says:

Your team MUST contain a COMPLETE squad of 30 players at the round 1 lockout. All incomplete teams will be REMOVED and permanently REPLACED in this league with other entries, to form a league of 16 complete teams.

So that cheap 'strategy' of waiting till round 3 won't work any more.

Cheap and stupid it wont work as you will be kicked out of your league at round 1 lockout for not filling your team.

Instead look at the fact that there are a lot of good looking Mid rookies so maybe instead of starting 1-2 like most people going for overall you start 3+ and stack your Def/Fwd with Keepers where the rookie depth isnt so strong. This allows you to trade for the best Mids of the year as well. You might lose some early games but you will come home very strong provided you trade right.

This sounds like a pretty good plan. In the end, winning your league is probably what it's all about if you're not a SC guru going for the $50,000.

I'm planning on playing 2 <$200,000 players on each line (excluding the emergencies) early in the season, to ensure I have plenty of cash when it counts

I was having this conversation today with a guy from work!

He put up the situation of what if you join up late ( i.e after Round 1 ) and then all teams are available to view, what is stopping someone from copying the team of the 1k winner of round 1???? This gives you a great team that has scored massive points in Rd 1 and allthough you are starting with a 1 week deficit you are a fair chance to be up there again in the coming weeks!! I was unable to answer it but it got me thinking!!!

Leagues excluded of course as you will not be able to enter any as you joined in late.

Two major flaws:
1) Looking at the winner last year, he had a good team but he also did perfect (well, close enough to) trades to pick up Hurn, ROK and Didak just before they exploded. That's a huge part of the game.
2) Even if your mate did everything else perfect, chances are he won't win because ~2000-2400 points is a huge gap to make up. That could take anywhere between 6-10 weeks to make up, assuming he's scoring 200 points more than the entire competition.

So in summary, bad idea. Can't win leagues, won't win overall.

Hmm...they may have changed the rules, but last year my mate snuck what he called a "cheat" team into our SC league at the last minute. He reserved his spot in the league by selecting a 29 man squad, which scored zero for the first three rounds, but then went on to win the league quite comfortably, after springing into action right before the first price rise.

There was also someone else in the league who never finished selecting her team. She scored zero each week for the whole year, but she never got kicked out of the league. It was just a big percentage booster when you played her.

Like I said, if they have changed the rules then everything's different, but last year this strategy would not have got you kicked out of the league. I'm not sure how satisfying the win would be though.

I wouldn't recommend it if it were possible. One of my mates did it in a league I was in with all my mates last year, and he copped it every time he won a game. The words 'cheap' and 'tainted' were bandied around all too often.;)

As per what 75% of the thread has been stating, they have changed the rules. Last year no longer applies.

Retain some trades until the finals. You need at least 6 going int the final series.

Never make a trade unless it is directly going to cause you to win the next game.

You don't have to win every week. Just finishing top 8 is enough provided you have the team you want and plenty of trades left come rd 1 of the finals.

Peak at the right time. No point being Collingwood and having the best team in July. It won't win you the league/comp... :D Your best team should be after your last game.

Only trade a keeper if it's a season ending injury/suspension/jail term.

ALWAYS pick Ablett as your Captain. Worse case scenario your opponent will do the same.

this is the exact strategy i used last year, works a treat. only problem is i lost the first 7 games. came home with a wet sail smashing every other team in my league scoring 2500+ in last 6 games. didnt make finals.you need a little luck and balance in ur side.
