Led Zeppelin vs The Beatles

I There early stuff, as someone pointed out, was teeny booper shit played with 3 chrords and would be laughed at these days if it was put out by anyone else but the Beatles.

FYI The Beatles early work is far more complex then it would seem. Check out this link and have a read.

Here is an excerpt.

"Their noisy items are the ones that arouse teenagers' excitement. Glutinous crooning is generally out of fashion these days, and even a song about "Misery" sounds fundamentally quite cheerful; the slow, sad song about "That Boy", which figures prominently in Beatle programmes, is expressively unusual for its lugubrious music, but harmonically it is one of their most intriguing, with its chains of pan-diatonic clusters, and the sentiment is acceptable because voiced cleanly and crisply. But harmonic interest is typical of their quicker songs too, and one gets the impression that they think simultaneously of harmony and melody, so firmly are the major tonic sevenths and ninths built into their tunes, and the flat submediant key switches, so natural is the Aeolian cadence at the end of "Not a Second Time" (the chord progression which ends Mahler's "Song of the Earth")."

Beatles by a mile.

Led Zep are great but the Beatles were a class above everyone.

If Zeppelin made better music, doesn't that alone make them a better band, or do people just say Beatles because they're heard on the radio all the time and are generally more spoken about and discussed about because of there popular history (solo careers, murder, death and divorce)?

I'd rather listen to Zeppelin than the Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd and the Who any day.

I think iv'e only heard two Zepp songs on the radio, Black Dog and Rock & Roll. People say Stairway is overplayed and therfore overated, yet i can tell you that i have never heard it on the radio once.

Who says Zeppelin made better music? They have been better musicians individually, but they certainly didn't make better music.

The Beatles are generally more spoken about due to their better music. Simple.

As for not hearing Zep songs on the radio - come on. Stairway to Heavan would only classic rock stations play lists about 2 or 3 times a day.

The Beatles made far better music. From music hall to psychedelia to early techno to child like whimsy to hard rock they did it all.

As for Stairway to Heaven not being heard on the radio please. It's one of the most overplayed songs in history.

Zep had comparable members to the Beatles, the Page-Plant combo was just as good as the McCartney-Lennon combination, Plant had one of the most, brilliant unique voices i have ever heard and Jimmy Page is with out a doubt in the top 5 guitarists of all time. John Bonham, i believe, was the best drummer of all time by a mile, just mesmerizing. John Paul Jones, although not very well known, was amazingly multi talented and could pretty much play every instrument, and do a damn fine job on it.

Beatles made some terrific popular music, but 1 vs 1, they just don't compare.
Even without commercially driven success, Led Zeppelin still out sold The Stones and the Who all the way throughout the 70's.

They don't come with coooee of Lennon-McCartney as a writing team.

The Who are better than Led Zeppelin though.

At the moment I like listening to some of Zep better than anything - love basically all of the tracks on their first 3 albums but only bits and pieces after that.

Overall though, the Beatles I rate the best as they produced a greater volume of A1 material, and revolutionised pop music. Truly the Bradmans of pop as someone said above - a magical synergy.

Most say it because it's true. In one of the many Beatles vs Stones threads I remember someone saying that every Stones fan deep, deep down knows in his heart The Beatles are superior,it's a fact. If you prefer The Stones, fine.

Lennon/McCartney are the greatest songwriters of the 20th century and the writers in The Stones,Zep or whoever just can't compare.
I don't know about that.

The reason the Beatles edge out the Stones is because the effect they had on culture and society at the time. But when you look at the whole picture the Stones are in many other ways better. Over the whole course the Stones have had a far bigger infuence on music. And Jagger/Richards are not far off Lennon/Mcartney.

As many famous songs as Lennon Mcartney but more depth and fabric.

ACDC rip the beatles and LZ put together...Back in Black is an absolute classic although Mobey Dick and Immigration song are good 2 from LZ...but ACDC the best then Muse!

Not quite...
As for crossing barriers, so did Zepp,
D'yer Ma'ker = Reggae
Trampled Underfoot = Blues/ Pop

And there are many more that i can't quite pick off my head at the moment, including lots of acoustic stuff and things incorporated into other songs, eg. Misty Mountain Hop.

Led Zepp were criticized for never making a ballad, and their reply? The Rain Song. Listen to it, its amazing.

The Beatles are considered "greater" because they tried to appeal to everyone, including cheap targets such as teen-agers (Panic! anyone?), and more people can relate to them.

Really the only songs i can listen to by The Beatles, if i was about to change to a Zepp track, would be Lady Madonna and Hey Jude. Apart from that it's pretty much the same sh*t, or if not it is sh*t.

And so much for the Lennon-McCartney writing team -
" Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl and you let your Knickers down.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen, I am the walrus,
goo goo g'joob."

Lennon and McCartney were an awesome song writing team. The Beatles pop tunes are universally known and loved. I can slap a Beatles album on and have a drunken sing along with my mates - none of whom were born when Lennon was shot. However when I'm by myself I'd rather listen to Zeppelin. They are my favourite band and considered by everyone who counts, the greatest rock group ever.
The Beatles - pop. Zeppelin - rock.

Umm the Stones were great at ripping old blues tunes early on that's for sure. :thumbsu:

Do you even know the history behind that song?

John got a letter from a kid who was going to the school he (John) went to as a kid. The kid told John that at school they were being made to study Beatles songs to find the meaning. So John decided to write a song that seemed incredibly deep and meaningful, but in fact meant absolutely nothing. Upon finishing writing the song he put his pen down and said "There, let the f--kers work that one out".

Nope they are considered greater because they simply are. You can prefer Zep,or The Stones or any other but The Beatles are superior to them all.

Find a classical music buff, someone who knows his music and tell them Zeppelin are in the same league as Mozart ,Beethoven etc and they'll simply laugh. Mention The Beatles and you will get a serious debate. Musically speaking they are light years ahead of the simple blues based rock of Zeppelin and The Stones.

Neither band was that original it's just that The Beatles created music that crossed over more barriers and appealed to more people world wide like no other band had done before.

Huh?

When Revolver came out is was revolutionary.
When Sgt Peppers came out it was revolutionary.
The White Album? Abbey Road?

Need I keep going?

No not dreaming.

The Who has easily has a catalogue of music that matches and surpasses Led Z.

Defining songs, albums and concepts has them comfortably sitting as one of the best and most talented bands ever to play.

Better than the Stones too.

I like The Who and all, but they didn't rock as hard as Led Zep (no matter how many guitars PT smashed), who put out 9 very solid albums and a few masterpieces in a very short amount of time. The Who had good rock songs like "won't get fooled again", but then plenty of beatle's inspired puff pop like "my generation". I'm not one for analyzing rock music, I judge by my ear and the feeling I get when I listen to a band. Bonham, Plant, Page and JPJ were the consumate performers of their generation. You could not improve the music they made in any way. It just sounds right. They are the highest selling rock band of all time for good reason. They made damn good albums to listen to.
