Led Zeppelin vs The Beatles

Why?

I keep reading how many albums Led Z sold with some people saying they even sold more than The Beatles.

But it's not Led Z that has the massive group of fantical fans still around the world today it's the Beatles.

I go to alot of record fairs still and i'm able to still find Led Z pretty regularly and not at that high a price, which i can't say about Beatles albums because the demand is far, far greater.

So for me that suggests the interest for the Beatles has subsided far less over time than it has for Zep.

Meaning people have moved on from Zep, but less so the Beatles.

Tickets were made available via a lottery system through Ahmettribute.com, costing £125 / $250. The website exceeded its bandwidth allowance and crashed almost immediately following the announcement, with the promoter predicting that the gig will cause the "largest demand for one show in history", due to the ticket request site receiving one billion page impressions, with one million people registering for fewer than 20,000 available tickets.

Yep, everyone has moved on from Zep....

Thats just some anecdotal evidence from your searches around record fairs. There could be any number of reasons for that. For example the Beatles are more hyped up by the media fondly, much the same way Elvis is.-They appeal to mainstream more than LZ would. It doesn't make them any better or worse,or any more timeless.

I can play the anecdotal game too....

When I got round to my mates house for a drink when it comes time to pull out a few golden oldies,LZ is ususally the one of the first they reach for.I can't remember the last time I heard a beatles song at any party, bbq, get together.

It doesn't mean jack.

People like what they like. This 'phase' stuff is just crap.

I bet when you want to play few oldies you go for a Specials , Madness,Clash or a Buzzcocks before you go to a Beatles. And I bet those albums are even harder to find at record fairs.

Does that mean the Clash are more timeless than the Beatles?

Erhm i'd bet you $1000 if they core of the Beatles were alive and said they were going to reform you'd get 100 times the amount of interest for tickets than what they received for Led Z.

And if a million people registered you can't say that there aren't people registering more than once.

It could be some dodgy ****er registering 10000 times to get tickets to scalp em.

Led Zeppelin without a doubt ..
yeah the beatles had lots of success, but Led Zeppelin's songs such as stairway to heaven, whole lotta love, since ive been loving you - gives me shivers all the time.
Let it be - is the only song by the beatles that i can keep listening to

For those people who think Plant's voice gives you a headache, Hahaha . Plant's voice spread around the world with shivers down peoples spines.
The Duo with Plant and Page is almost unbeatable

Today in JB I saw a cd of Beatles tunes made into childrens lullabies - thought that was cute...... but then saw there was another of Zep tunes! Stairway, Dazed & Confused..... there are a few different artists, Nirvana etc.

:)

Sure The Beatles are hyped up by the media, and for a god reason, they are the world most famous and successful band.

And I don't debate people who say they enjoy listening to Zeppelin more than the Beatles because that's something I respect.

I debate the point when people say Plant/Page were a better or even equal writing team to Lennon/McCartney.

As for those bands you mentioned they are actually pretty easy to find and not expensive at fairs especially Madness and The Specials because they sold ok when they were around but these days their followings are pretty small compared to what they once were.

And I do love the Clash but i'd never try and say any of their albums were in the class of The Beatles or Led Zeppelin as a complete package of a band.

I just find the whole "how dare anyone question Led Z as a group" reactions a bit boring now.

Whole Lotta Love, great cover version Led Z did but not really their song to take all the credit for :)

Maybe you didn't know that though as you seem to be indicating there its an original.

The Beatles by a country mile.

The reason was not only were they prolific and covered a wide style of music, but overall they progressed from one album to the next.

Even the album considered their weakest "Beatles For Sale" has some classic songs.

You can count bad Beatles songs on one hand and on the whole they are Harrison songs.

Led Zeppelin may have been OK, but I would place Stones and The Who ahead of them. Hell, I would palce The Hollies above them.

Good to see no on rates the muzak style of the Bee Gees.

Oh look out they will have the knives out for you now ;)

Alan Clarke and Graham Nash were a terrific vocal combo though while together.

ye but look at Guns N Roses doing Bob Dyalns version of Knocking on Heaven's door. they dont take credit for it but when you hear them play it live, it's all about the music and how well they play it.

The point is G'n'R would credit Dylan with writing the song on the cd while Zep were prone to use other's songs without doing that. I'm with you that the main thing is the music tho.

Ok.

Until the next episode of 'were Led Zepplin the greatest band ever?'-I bid you adeu.

:D

Id lean towards the Beatles just. Don't enjoy them as much as led zep but gotta appreciate what they've done.

Here's another one. Yeah I like Led Zeppelin more ...... but i'll say the Beatles. You see it is ingrained in you that you have to say the Beatles are the greastest band ever even though you personally don't believe it.

Not really. Personally I like The Fratellis more than Zeppelin, does that make them a better band? Probably not.

What is there not to love about the Beatles?

For those with a subtle and more refined taste in music, then it is easy to appreciate their brilliance.

Those who think Loud and Fast = Good, then they probably won't get the Beatles.

Thats my take

I'm not saying the Beatles aren't great, just saying that it borders on the sacrilegious to say otherwise. A couple examples have been on this thread. Yeah I like listening to Led Zeppelin way more, but I'll say the Beatles. Why is this - answer because you have always been told they are the greatest even though personally you do not believe it to be true.

It is not about personal opinion. Fact is they are the greatest band ever. Full Stop. It has got nothing to do with being told that they are - all one needs to do is do some research on the subject and then one can see that they are the greatest and most influential band of all time.

They are not my favourite band but I acknowledge their greatness. I guess those who weren't around (including myself) in the Beatles era don't really appreciate how mind blowingly brillant they really were. Yes there may have been better musicians technically or been one or two songs that other bands did before the Beatles, but no one changed the course of rock 'n' roll, as a group, as much as the Beatles. They will forever be recognised for this.

Led Zeppelin 1: contained only '1' song that could be called original.

Just to put things into a bit of perspective.

Ah yes the other old chesnut.Your nothing if not predictable mate.

Adieu!

Well this link explores it a bit in detail through a cold case type scenario.

Probably a bit harsh on some songs but it does raise some valid points, and it's not done by Howard Stern it's conducted by a guy called Denny Somach.

Here's also the same guy talking about Stairway to Heaven and how they have borrowed the start off a song called 'Taurus' by Spirit and used it on Stairway.

And i can deffinately hear a similarity in the guitar part.

Which for me takes a bit of a shine of that song knowing that gorgeous start wasn't even a Page creation.

It's not about questioning whether they were a great band, they were.

It's about debating the people who put them up on a pedestal as being some kind of super creative geniuses of rock.
