Noticed Hammo's latest article takes a strong shot at Leigh again for noting that he thinks QLD will never be AFL heartland.

Really, what a childish response from Hammilton - there is no way he got any 'latest' inside word from the Lions or the AFL on something that Leigh Matthews has been saying for years.

Why would Leigh change his genuine opinion just to suit the AFL's preferred narrative??? I mean to me it seems pretty obvious. QLD is not going to be AFL heartland anytime soon and it is a good chance it never will be.

A long time ago I once believed in the fantasy that if only the QLD and NSW public could regularly see the great game that is Aussie Rules football, then they will convert to the greatest game on earth. It is abundantly clear now however that such a monumental process, if it ever is to take place, would need an extraordinary long time frame (like 100 years). Even then it is far more probable than not that existing norms / passions are so entrenched that it will never actually happen.

That doesn't mean that the AFL can't grow significantly in QLD and NSW, but lets not kid ourselves - it is going to be Rugby heartland going forward regardless of what the AFL might dream of.
