My theory:

Fans of the non-reigning premiers are so bitter about supporting garbage teams that as soon as they see blood of any team (but preferably the successful ones) they go for the kill. They do this either as a means of justification for having their team's name dragged through the mud in the past (Essendon), deflecting attention from their team's current bad name or poor circumstances (Essendon, Brisbane, North), or as a means of nipping in the bud whatever might come their way (Essendon/everyone else).

That's why opposition supports act like jerks to us...all the time

It was blown out of proportion because of the Hodge incident a few minutes prior.

Was a bit much, but they have been banging on about "if you elect to bump and hit the head" stuff. People saying "should have tried being shorter" need to realise it's the same as high tackles, you have to adjust.

That being said, Lewis' one could have been avoidable. I think there was a split second decision where he should have at least feigned dropping his arm. Even if he had gone with the shoulder, or given him a rib tickler, it would have been a better option.

We know now that it did by the way the boys played on the weekend. The suspensions were just the fallout from that awakening because life is not perfect
