Scandal Liam Jurrah back in jail (again)

It's interesting that the Parliamentary Voice issue is being discussed now, the premise is that the Aboriginal experience is "exceptional" so deserves an exceptional solution or response. From that point of view, treating Aboriginal and non- Aboriginal folk differently is justified. Not that anyone in this thread has suggested doing the same wrt Jurrah, but if they were to do so it would not necessarily be a radical position in today's environment.
No. We have laws and we have a society, you dont get to work outside of those boundaries and claim cultural differences. Where does that end? What we have works for 98% of the country

That's actually not true.

During sentencing for every criminal conviction numerous factors are taken into account. Things such as Age, gender, health, prior record, prospect of rehabilitation, danger to the community, mitigating factors such as cultural and socio-economic history, substance abuse, need to care for dependants, support network, who they know, who has put in a good word.

The four main purposes in delivering a sentence are: as a punishment, a deterrent to others, safety of the community and rehabilitation.

The reason people look at different solutions for the indigenous community is that the current system is clearly not working. Throwing everyone in gaol, in general, does not rehabilitate them and most likely makes them a bigger risk to the community when they are released. It does not seem to be acting as a deterrent to others, and is just causing the criminal cycle to snowball.

I think what just about everyone wants is less crime, poverty and welfare. So many people get way too hung up on the punishment, without actually thinking about the end goal.
Would you rather have thousands of offenders coming out of gaol back on the streets with a bad attitude, or look at programs to rehabilitate and educate to try and stop the next generation from heading down the same path?

This is also something that needs to be looked at for all Australians. The current system of incarceration does not rehabilitate, prisons are just there for punishment, and send criminals back out much worse than they went in.

No to what? The Parliamentary voice may well become a thing. In which case, it will be part of the system, not outside it.

You think everyone gets judged the same? Have a read of the judge's decision from Eddie Mcguire's mate Joffe who admitted sexually assaulted a child. The judge basically let him off because he had a tough childhood and people said he is a good bloke.

That's right, you can sexually assault a child and walk free if you are mates with people in high places. But you go off about everyone else aside from indigenous Australians getting judged by the same rules.......

2 break and enter machete attacks, drink driving (blew 0.27), 4 counts of aggravated assault, high speed police chase, aggravated assault threatening with a tyre iron & knife.

Find it bewildering how defensive people seem to be getting over him in here.

Mate, if white people didn’t invade there would be no police to chase him, machetes to slash people with, and tire irons. Duh!

Pointless race-baiting. Obviously not intelligent enough to have a reasonable discussion.

What you’re experiencing is a reductio ad absurdem - my sarcastic response is the logical conclusion to those that blame everyone else for aboriginal’s disproportionate contributions to domestic violence (including incest, child beides and violence against women), alcohol and drug abuse, and crime. Much of the above can be boiled down to something like; you’re white, with a white upbringing and history, and so you don’t understand. If you find it ridiculous, that is because it is. Go back into the conversation and you will see those that are sympathetic and defend Jurrah (often out of both sides of their mouth „oh I’m not defending him but…“) mentioned colour first.

Jurrah‘s life will not be turned around by blaming everyone else first—including random people throughout hundreds of years of history.

PS I am not white, and this is irrelevant when judging an actual scumbag.

And you would be the first to ask for an autograph of him little man

From reading this thread you would be the one asking for his autograph. Unlike you, i don't have any time for people that attack women with machetes. How many times is it that he's attacked women now ? Jurrah is where he belongs
