Ling set to retire

Great career! Thought he was gone after last year but was good this year.

Who is now the ugliest footballer in the league?

Angus Graham. Jesus Christ.

EDIT: Picture doesn't really do it justice - he has one of those rubbish noses and a permanent derp look on his face.

If true, a few elite onballers will be breathing a sigh of relief. One of the best shut down players ever...

First Rawlings, then Ling retires. There'd be a few small forwards and onballers getting around absolutely loving the idea of playing 2012 without two of the best shut-down players in the game.

I'm happy he retired on top. Once you think about retiring you should retire. I'm guessing that elite football is so demanding, both physically and mentally, that if you're not 100% committed to the next season you'll let yourself down.

Massive respect for Ling. He was a pudgy, average full-forward who probably wouldn't get drafted today but he's a testament to how hard work and dedication beats natural skill every time.

Also love the fact that he stuck with the high number he was lumped with when he was crap. Too many players too keen to drop down into the "good numbers" after a half decent season.

I know you're biased but please dont mention Rawlings and Ling in the same breath.

Still more attractive than the all time ugliest league footballer.

Unfortunately we got desperate with our drafting in the mid eighties and gave Gary Lyon's brother a go.

Champion.

Written off plenty of times ... always played fair and hard ... wonderful leader ... great ambassador for the Cats.

I reckon he'll make a fantastic commentator too - very astute and won't take himself too seriously.

[sarcasm]

Word has reached me that Freo players were doing somersaults upon hearing this news.

It means that the stomachs of Freo players are now safe from Cameron Ling cheapshots (did it twice in 3 years against Freo).

[/sarcasm]

On a serious note, 3 premierships in 5 years is a fantastic way to finish a career and he'll be remembered as one of the great shut down players of the current era

Typical Freo supporter

Typical Freo supporter

The serious part of my post reflects my views more than the sarcastic parts.

Typical Geelong supporter for not understanding that

I thought Ling may have had another year left in him, but always best to go out as a captain of a Premiership winning side and not be injured.

Perfect timing by the Ginger Ninja. Will go down as a Geelong great. One of the toughest footballers you will ever see. Lingy would have to lose a leg, maybe two before he didn't come back on the field.

just confirmed in his press conference that he is now retired. great career one of the more underrated players in the comp because of his role as a tagger

Really thought he'd go around another year trying his hand up forward like he started. Still, can't begrudge him for going out on top. Class act, great player and leader. Well done Lingy :thumbsu:

in a different year he could have. But suspect Scott would prefer to see the likes of Vardy, Menzel, Duncan up forward

Pretty good time to retire. Flog the current Brownlow medalist, kick a nice goal and go out with a premiership.

Respect to the bloke, won't be sad to see him go though as it'll mean I won't have to put up with one of Hodge or Mitchell going invisible every time we play the Cats :)

Second all of that.

Every time Hawthorn plays Geelong, that ginger-nutted f*cker destroys whoever they put him on. And not only that, tends to rack up some handy possessions while he's at it. I've always thought he was the single biggest problem for us, even with all the midfield talent Geelong has.

Not to mention hard - that was brilliant on Saturday - splattered his nose all over the place on the back of Swan's nonce, and then carried on like nothing had happened. Far out.

Perfect way to retire.

Same as the 08 GF, got his knee/hip smashed and probably would've been subbed out if that was a rule back then. Instead comes back on and continues not allowing Mitchell to get a touch.
