Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Am i the only one the likes Irons?? And remember his play before he was injured?

Stupid question but is it just me or do some players play better stepping up to AFL level then they do in the SANFL? Like you cant always judge players on there SANFL form to bring them into the big time?

Lobbe was playing reserves before he came in and stepped up so if a player believes enough in themselves they can step up!

You're not. I think he showed enough last year to be re-rookied at least. A skinny midget like him was always going to take a few years to adjust to playing against men, but he certainly has the talent to play AFL if developed properly.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

I saw he had a couple of good games on the back of a good preseason, and that he massively faded like Wade Thompson.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

How come reserves aren't a factor for the Crows at the moment?
Dangerfield and Sloane spent next to no time in the SANFL. Walker was a ready made player when he was 18.

Rutten, Tippett, Thompson, Johncock, Jacobs, Rielly, Van Berlo pick themselves each week. So there's a spine of players who perform and are never spending time in the SANFL.

Much different to our set-up at the moment, with players not performing and guys like Salopek being sent to the SANFL black hole and somehow ending up in the reserves reserves and not really learning anything, just becoming a wasted spot on the list.

Anyone who comes into their side is just a bit player. McKernan, Petrenko, Shaw, Smith, etc. None of them really demand a spot in the starting line-up more than a D.Stew or Broadbent do.

When Thompson and Rutten slow down, or key players lose form, or Tippett leaves, they might have the same trouble finding a replacement from the guys they have playing SANFL.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

I really like Irons, but youve gotta show something more than a few kicks in the SANFL reserves.

The difference as mentioned in a different thread with the other side is that they seem to pick a heap of players every year who at the very least perform very very well at SANFL level. Mckernan, Shaw, Laird, Mcintyre, Talia, Lyons, Otten, Martin, Jaensch, Riley, Lynch, Jenkins. These guys are in the best players every bloody week.

Our guys seem to play one great week then hardly get a kick for a few weeks - Sal, Hitchcock, Phillips, Ebert etc

i reckon it is. probably stands out less because when guys like smith are coming in they are playing next to rutten johncock reilly doughty etc. still some old heads amongst that young group. for all the massive fapfest that has gone on for years over players who i saw as doing sfa when it was the same old heads really pulling the weight, this year is the first time ive actually seen young kids step up for the crows.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

adelaide still have a decent core of older players. we lost all ours very close together unfortunately

we lost 11 of our premiership 22 + 2 of the best players in the afl (primus/francou) with-in 2-3 years of that premiership. how the hell we never bottomed out is quite frankly now astonishing. it seems like we prolonged the inevitable and now when we bring kids into the team we dont have those same seasoned heads anymore.

not having a reserves team, then flinging these kids out there after they have been running around according to mark mickans take on football to stand next to guys like judd and luke hodge doesnt work too well unless you have a great team-mate standing next to them.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

As for trade targets...

Levi Greenwood - 4 qtr runner, hurts people. don't know anything else about

Dennis Armfield - 4 qtr runner, accountable, breaks lines

Hayden Jolly - can this guy actually play?

Butler... maybe. He is not the type of player we need but Surjan might be handy in the middle.

Brett Peake - not srs

Trade bait:

Pearce, Salopek, D.Stew

Might get a late pick for guys like Ebert and Rodan if anyone wants them.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Jolly could be interesting but hes just as lazy as any of our mids apparently. Thats why he doesnt get games.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Butler would be a good replacement for Logan?
Maybe, but Tom Logan isn't a best 22 player anyway. We are just waiting for Pittard to come back.

They have to make cuts this year? We might get him cheap ...

Add Tapscott to the list too.

Are these guys trade bait because we have similar guys on the list or because the coaching staff can't manage them. It seems like most of our past trades have ended up top ten players for their new club. The 3 you mention should probably be palying for us every week.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

None of those 3 have significant, if any, trade value at all.

greenwood would be a decent upgrade on several guys in the backend of our midfield and a good get.

is also not going to be a top 1 2 or 3 midfielder like we need.

hence giving up anything that could be used to get the top 1 2 or 3 midfielder we need for greenwood would be a mistake.

jolly is a strong strong candidate to be delisted by gc this year. is a good size and was a very good prospect so i dont know what happened. would hope port look at him with caution. i would rather take on a young 20 yr old who has question marks over his attitude or commitment ( if they are his issues?) than an average talent, slow, mid 20's delistee like we have been doing every year for ages now. rockliff was a rookie pick for bris because clubs were concerned about similar things ( and i think was considered more a hff than a midfielder as well).

Stevens was and Dew was when it counted, but we didn't trade either of them away.

Eagleton would have gone close for the dogs and Harley for the Cats, but we've never been superburned I don't reckon. We absolutely pissed in the Eagleton trade and Harley was behind too many players during our good years.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Josh Carr?
Nick Stevens?
Stuart Dew?
Shaun Burgoyne?

Seriously, dont think any of the four were even in the Top 10 at their clubs.

the way he worded it i took it as he was implying players that we traded that then became top ten players at a club. certainly didnt in its context come across as being about players that were stars at our club going on to do well at another.

thinking about it i dont really see any players that have been average for us and gone on to be excellent for another club after leaving us. im talking about players we actually played not traded away having not yet found a place in our team for them ala harley. best i can think of is guerra, and even then im not sure his form is that much better than when he played for us, just now he is playing in his prime in a good team.

Boak, Ebert, Hartlett, First rounder, Jacobs, Wingard, Gray... a lot of talent there and also a lot of fragile bodies.

Porthos pointed it out earlier that we need a guy who can do the team stuff as much as we need a midfield star. A guy to help Boak out and soften up the opposition. It was clear v Adelaide we lacked that player.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Um, yes congratulations philythy, you just proved the point I made in my post?

Cant think of a single one that has gone on to great things after a trade.

Very much agree, although Phillip's performance justified shit in SANFL = shit in AFL.

Honestly I can't say much about Ah Chee's for of late but I'd love to see him just thrown into the deep end and see how he goes. He would be one that I could potentially see take the opportunity and run, run, run....
