Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

I thought we discussed that Goddard would cost us any picks? I would cough up picks and at least as a free agent we know Goddard will offer us quality whereas Higgins would cost us pucks and players plus injuries :)

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

I'm not talking about picks, I'm talking about money. Goddard would cost us probably well over a million dollars a year to lure him away from Victoria with the big clubs all sure to be interested in him. He's not even close to being worth that, he's only had one truly elite year and he looked lazy and disinterested for much of last year.

Plus the money he'd cost would probably cost us the signature of a good young player somewhere down the track. Plus any quality he may provide will be well and truly dried up by the time we're anywhere near a premiership, unlike Higgins.

Paying $1,000,000 to lure Goddard over (don't kid yourself, that's what it'll take at the very least) would be taking one step forward and two steps back.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Porthos keeps suggesting picks.

Your assuming 1 mil he may be on 700 here for all we know and I think his size, versatility and skill could only be beneficial for us. He would be a star player in our average side.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

There is absolutely no way we would get Brendon Goddard to come to Port Adelaide ahead of Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon etc. for 700k. Absolutely no ****ing way. I'd bet 700k on it.

And who cares if he'd be a star player in an average side? What does that achieve? He'd be a retired player by the team we were a good side, and if the ridiculous amount of money we'd have to take out of the salary cap to get him forced a couple of good young players out of the side, then not only would he not be here when we're a good side again but he'd slow our rise to becoming a good side down. Not to mention that his form over the last couple of years doesn't really categorize him as a 'star player' anyway.

Sorry Rick, but getting Brendon Goddard to Port is a terrible idea. The bad outweighs the good by a long, long way.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

So why do we play Rodan Kane Dom & co?

We need better quality experienced players to sheppard the young boys, personally I think Higgins ain't that crash hot either. I'd like to see how those teams would fit him
In when Collingwood for example could afford 400k for Davis!

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Can we rookie some gun State league players that haven't been selected for various reasons. Not players that have already been delisted from other clubs but genuine young quality state league players that have not had a chance at AFL level.

So many other clubs pick up quality off the rookie list and we get leftovers like pfeiffer or speculative youngsters who haven't proven anything in a genuine adult competition. Lets get some mature bodies in and hope they can put pressure on for spots in the team. I mean look at Freo yesterday with Broughton, Duffield, Mzungu, Pearce, DeBoer and then Spurr coming through as well...

We had a chance to do that last year and stuffed that up too. Kyal Horsley was taken in the rookie draft by Gold Coast. He won the B&F with Subiaco and finished second in the Sandover Medal. We selected McCarthy in the pre-season draft before the rookie draft.

I don't think you could class Pfeiffer as a left over either as he was taken at Pick 3 early in the rookie draft. Other players to do well so far include Magner (Pick 42) and although they haven't played yet Couch (Pick 24), Dell'Olio (Pick 29), Crisp (pick 40), Gibson (Pick 63) would be walk up starts for Port based on their VFL/reserves performances.

Even trading Renouf for pick 33 was a waste considering Hawks got
Broc McCauley for pick 16 in the rookie draft. Even Richmond did well to get Maric from the Cows.

Freo have done well to draft those players listed. What's their recruitment team upto?

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

wouldn't let me quote >.<

Delist
Cassisi - please retire seriously
Kornes - great start to the year but right now is just a bigger version of last year
Phillips - why is he even on the list
Maybe drod - cant play a whole match only parts here or there can't accept it
Phiefer - might come good but don't think so

Persist
D stew - last year to show something
Redden - he's good and young keep playing him when he's fit
P stew - deserves a spot each week and try's hard
Broady - not a midfielder but worth a hff role

Trade
Westhoff - if he applied himself he could be great biggest if though and at what 25? Maybe worth a trade
Boak - needs support but will be a great player
Hartlett - he's 21 I think give him more of a chance and just keep him in the midfield
Pearce - think he's gone anyway if he has gone to gws good luck to him

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

I respect your opinions on boak...i don't think he will be good and if we trade him we could get over the odds

Same goes with hartlett i really think we can get over the odds I think 1 his body can't hold out to reach what we all hope he will or 2 he just not willing to to do the hard yards to become elite...his body language on field is atrocious and I wouldn't want that shit spreading through our already damaged footy club.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Because they don't cost a million plus a year?

Combined salary could match an offer for Goddard and his influence would be better than all 3 combined at the moment and again he's the type of player which will draw attention to us also. Something we need. Also I'm looking at Goddard as he's probably the best and achievable players in the RA or FA listing. I would be concerned with McLean because he's coming from a crap culture likes ours at the moment. St Kilda isn't great but it's better than ours.

Anyway this thread doesn't need an ongoing debate on the matter, I've made my opinion, you disagree. Many people disagree at the end of 08 when I said flick Chad and Shaun off also, with hindsight didn't seem a bad idea now even though we did flick Shaun and did well a year later. Just saying.

He's not achievable without gutting our salary cap to the point of putting our list back a couple of years, and he hasn't been much good since 2010. You're kidding yourself.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

I'm sure it'd never happen, but after watching the Saints game last night, watching Milera/Saad and Stanley, then comparing them to Phillips and DStew, I couldn't help but feel a little jealous. We need to trade one of DStew or Westy, surely they both carry some currency, given that they are tall players that aren't terrible.
Additionally Dom, Kane, DRod (as much as I like him in patches) and probs Salopek don't fit into our long term premiership plans, so trade them while they still have some damn value!

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

I'm not sure Blee has a two year contract, its not compulsory for us to give him one at his age. That minimum contract length only applies to entry-age draftees.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

I firmly believe that the lack of a reserves side is the clubs number one problem at the moment.

Our draftees are simply not given the chance to develop a rapport with each other outside of the cut throat world of AFL football and they are not able to practice in a game situation the game plan that the club spends all week drilling into them.

One of the reasons why Centrals have been so dominant is that Roy Laird's playbook is drilled into every side at every level. This may not equate into wins in the other grades but when a kid is promoted to league he already knows his role backwards.

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

How come reserves aren't a factor for the Crows at the moment? It's can't be that bad not having a reserves even though I can see the real benefits.

Also, I never realised we are under a salary cap pressure squeeze where a 700k salary is going to cost us a few players? How do the other big teams do it? Maybe our equalisation policy in the salary cap is the reason we are dominating the comp with all these star players, ohh wait!

Re: Drafting, Trading & Rookie Thread

Am i the only one the likes Irons?? And remember his play before he was injured?

Stupid question but is it just me or do some players play better stepping up to AFL level then they do in the SANFL? Like you cant always judge players on there SANFL form to bring them into the big time?
