Precedent has been set by the daniher contract. Make it known we’ll match anything that doesn’t get us tier 1 compo and let the buyer do some creative accounting. Give him 3 years at 850 then add 2 years at 500 a year or two after he signs. The afl has left it open to be rorted

he s our best player and in the top 2 intercept defenders in the league ....any contract for him would get tier 1 compo

ideally he ll stay and most likely will despite some random dribble in here

Our forward line functioned so much better with Jack Gunstons leadership. If his body allows it i would give him another 2 year contract.

I see him as our most important senior around the club. Foward line functions better, professional, a hard trainer, high footy iq and finals / premiership experince. Should of been captain back when Stratts was appointed.

Let's face it player managers know how to make clubs pay more than they should. Backing himself to have a huge year and ask for more money .......why are people surprised? Taranto another not signing....it's business. Blues and saints have made it easy for player managers to shop their player around and create a frenzy that clubs are coming for them. Hearing Pickering talk about his players ...everyone has huge talent and will be a stat. Player managers are the ruination of the sport we all loved and watch from previous day's. Ben king is not worth 1.5 a year...gimme a break. It has got to a point now that dealing in recycled players is dangerous. They have all inflated prices that don't warrant the price tag. I,de rather go find some gems in s/a leagues and W/a leagues and NT. Saad, McGovern, hannebury, Zac Jones, Hoskin Elliot, Shiels...all on big money but they haven't lived up to the hype. We went hard on Shiel what a huge sigh of relief we haven't got that C grader on our books. Go find and develop your own talent. Pay sis what he wants....we need to keep this group together .

Stephenson perfect example dropped after Rd 1. .....Hill another. Huge contract. Watching from outside they don't love the game they love the laughs and mate ship and have found 2 clubs silky enough to believe the story they are ready to take the next level. As I said so many of these players running around on huge dollars. I want a blank canvas that's hungry for a game. Excited to be playing. Dan Rioli......perfect example huge talent ...but when he wants to play hard yes...but happy to run out and rack the cheapies up.

They are a good club. Regardless of the AFL bias, they are very competent at making good selections. I know they get a leg up but they exploit it very well.

Like how they went to the US to learn about the draft to work how to use the new rules to there advantage before the AFL closed the loop hole on matching father son picks etc.

But we want to be in heavy rebuild mode next two years.

Do you foresee us trying to trade players out like Mitchell, Breust etc again this year to try to get top 10,20 picks. Or do you think Mitchell we now keep them for experience. And do we want to keep Sicily or will they let him see what is around so we can get another top draft pick.

We got pick 19 for Buddy for the largest contract in the history of the game. The AFL is not giving us pick 3 for Sicily.

Most likely would be a pick at the end of the first round.

I would keep him, make the contract heavily front ended (Yr 1 = $1m, Yr 2 = $900k, Yr 3 = $800k, Yr 4 = $700k and Yr 5 = $600k) so 5 year $4m deal. Expect we will not have Shiels, Hartigan or McEvoy to pay for next year, so we should have cap space. I would also not have a problem trading out someone like JOM to keep Sis.

That’s because we won the flag so it was a pick after our first which was 18 if we finished bottom 5 then would be a pick in the bottom 5 after our first pick or 6 if we finished 5th.

Pretty sure it’s paid after your first round pick if the salary is big enough.

Think of it this way. When the Suns came into the comp and they were allowed to sign players from other teams and the AFL was going to compensate clubs based on another one of their formulas. The Cats were originally looking at a start of second round pick for losing Ablett (which is about the same as an end of first round pick) Cats contemplate compensation for Ablett but as we know and accept that would have been a manifestly anomalous result for a player of his calibre. And so the compensation ended up being 2x first rounders for him. Arguably still unders, but a hell of a lot better than a start of second round pick. And that compensation occurred after the Cats had just won their third flag in five years.

Pick 1 alone for Buddy wouldn't have been enough, but I accept that would never happen. Even just having had it be moved up to mid-first round would have allowed us to draft Patrick Cripps.

And no, it hasn't been tested. Pick 3 for Tom Lynch was totally adequate. The compensation doesn't need to be the market value of the player, but it should at the very least be within the post code of the ball park of the market value of the player.

Anyway, imo they should do away with restricted free agency, compensation picks, and minimum salary cap spends. Award lifetime unrestricted free agency for every player after 7 years. The compensation is the freed up cap space. No minimum salary cap then allows weaker clubs to create the cap room to make plays for multiple talented free agents to shoot up the ladder. This also incentivises clubs to really look after the wellbeing of their players to encourage them to stay rather than forcing them to through a restrictive player movement system.

If he had Gone to GWS like every one thought we may have we probably would have got the same as Geelong did as it was a start up club.

Is that including Long and do you see Butler playing on ball or more the Breust role in the future.
Yes, Yes and no. He’s a different player to Breust, so he’ll get more time up the field, but he’ll also get a good look at the forward line.

I don't think the money will be the deciding factor. At 27 (28 before Round 1 next year) this will most likely be Sicily's last contract. If he's after a Cup, getting him to buy into Sam's vision will be the hurdle we need to navigate. Logically we're 3+ seasons away from competing towards the top end again, at which point James will be beyond 30 and potentially coming to the end. If he wants success now, and really no one could blame him for that - now is the time to go.

If we're to look at the list overall, his role is one I'm reasonably happy with our stocks so getting another top 10 selection from compensation wouldn't be awful for the club. But yeah, I feel like money might not be the negotiation stand off, personally.

I can’t agree with the bolded.
We messed up a lot of early picks between 2002-2007, but still put together a flag winning side by 2008.

We’ve arguably got more young talent on the list in 2022 than we had in 2005, it’s just that we’ve got it in completely different areas of the ground.
As long as we nail the early picks when we get them we’re going to be able add more than enough top end talent over the next 2-3 years to build a premiership capable side, but also being able to find it elsewhere is just a bonus.

Still think we are missing the Buddy,Roughy in this rebuild if you look at the 2021 draft including the midseason/Rookie where we got

Newcombe,Ward,Butler,MacDonald,Long

As I feel Lewis,Jeka,Kosi are stop gaps.

We need that 197 plus key forward that some clubs have these days with the King brothers,Darcy etc

Is there any key forwards in this years top kids or are they just midfielders.

Lemmey a KPF that's a shot for pick one. He's 199cm and very mobile would pair well with Lewis (198cm)

See what we can get if we finish bottom 5 could be two picks in the bottom 5 with FA compo.
Agree. I think the best strategy is to wait it out till later in the year if possible. James shows great form and we are bottom 3, it might be a mutual decision to explore the market. Or, alternatively, if we are ok with the terms, we sign him up then. We lose nothing by waiting and I don't think sic does either. If he plays like he did in rd1 for the whole year and shows he can lock down KPFs then his value will only increase.

No but we need that kind of fwd that is hard to match up on as not many have Key backs that are 197 plus
I'm not sure that 'get another Buddy' is any sort of bankable plan...

To all of the people talking about a top 5 pick for Sicily. Can I please remind you that we WON last week! We are currently looking good against Port, in Adelaide.
Sorry to spoil your daydream but do not go spending picks 2 and 3 just yet.
