Loewe to retire.

St Kilda's veteran champion Stewart Loewe will retire at the end of the 2002 season. Loewe, 34, will officially announce his retirement at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Loewe has played eight games so far in 2002 taking his games tally to 312 and will end the year as St Kilda’s greatest games record holder. He passed the 300-game mark last season and produced a best-on-ground performance in his milestone match.

However, after playing his 300th game, he injured his knee in Round 11 and missed the remainder of 2001. He returned for the season opener in 2002, but missed four weeks between rounds five-eight with another knee injury.

Loewe co-captained St Kilda from 1996-98, won a best and fairest in 1990, was named All-Australian three times (1990-91-92) and led the Saints’ goalkicking on two occasions.

He was also a star performer at state-of-origin level for Victoria, playing 11 matches and booting 20 goals, along with winning the E.J.Whitten Medal in 1992.

Loewe made his debut way back in 1986 and has been one of the competition’s premier forwards for over a decade.

He's had a fantastic career. Been one of the best players in the last 15 years. Good luck for life after football Buckets!

my greatest memory of Stewie Loewe is in games at Moorabbin and Waverley, running up towards the wing, and taking marks reaching over the top of players. Did it on a consistent basis.

One thing that people forget about him is he once kicked 90 goals in a season, 44 in the first 7 rounds. Who knows how many he could have kicked in his career if he did not share the forward line with Plugger for 10 years.

I thought this was common knowledge, but I suppose it is good to make it official.
Only 10 more milestone games for the Saints this year, as every game Loewe plays he breaks the club record for the most number of games. It is also a cost saving for the cheer squad who can resuse the "Congratulations Buckets - Club Record for the Saints" run through for the next ten weeks.

Stewie Loewe has been a great player for the Saints and has been loyal throughout. Could have gone to Freo in their early years (like Harvs) but showed why our club motto is Fortius Quo Fidelious - Strength through Loyalty.
And to AFLTN - pfffft:rolleyes:

Loewe - one of the greats of the 90s. However he has been labouring the last couple of weeks. Has chosen the right time to go out of the game as he still offers the Saints a positive contest for the ball.

Well done, good career.

good decision stewie,

all the best and enjoy the rest of your life.

hey plugger you could of taken a leaf outta this guys book, retire with dignity,

He was an absolute champion. My favourite non Bulldog, non groovy player of recent years. A good time to go to, you could see on Friday he just hasn't got it anymore, dropped marks he would never have dropped in the past.
I remember him taking 19 marks against us at Waverly in 1998 while Grant took 16 and the Saints just got up. Unbelievable mark

well done stewie on a great career.

a player that maximised every ounce of his talent to become a great center half forward. is arguably the best contested mark in the history of the game.

is not out of place when the names carey, brereton and kernahan are mentioned as the great chf's of the 90's.

Your on drugs Falchoon he should retire too:) :D :p

If he retires I'll start taking the drugs, he's played 7 games this year and been the Saints best in 3. I guarantee he'll get 10+ votes in the brownlow. Have a look at the Tigers midfield and try to find one player having a better season than Harves, you certainly won't find 3. Therefore Harves would be most welcome in the Tiges midfield. ( But then again so would KB at present)
