St Kilda's veteran champion Stewart Loewe will retire at the end of the 2002 season. Loewe, 34, will officially announce his retirement at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Loewe has played eight games so far in 2002 taking his games tally to 312 and will end the year as St Kilda’s greatest games record holder. He passed the 300-game mark last season and produced a best-on-ground performance in his milestone match.
However, after playing his 300th game, he injured his knee in Round 11 and missed the remainder of 2001. He returned for the season opener in 2002, but missed four weeks between rounds five-eight with another knee injury.
Loewe co-captained St Kilda from 1996-98, won a best and fairest in 1990, was named All-Australian three times (1990-91-92) and led the Saints’ goalkicking on two occasions.
He was also a star performer at state-of-origin level for Victoria, playing 11 matches and booting 20 goals, along with winning the E.J.Whitten Medal in 1992.
Loewe made his debut way back in 1986 and has been one of the competition’s premier forwards for over a decade.
