Watching NZ v Perth NBL a week or so ago made me thinking of distances some clubs have to travel for a game of footy.

Whats the furthest clubs in your local comp. have to go ?

My local suburban comp has Wyndahmvale going to Gladstone Park which is app. 45 kms - not bad for a suburban comp but surely some of the country clubs travel more than 100km each way ?

Who goes the furtherest ?

I have to travel to Houghton its a fair hike, bout 80mins from my house, its pretty bad, along with parralowie and north pines there both about an hour from me!

In the Northern Riverina FL Cobar do some massive road trips, I think they crack 400 km one way on a few away games.

Check out the site of the Mid American AFL if you want to see some monster away fixtures - www.midfooty.com ..... They pretty much fly for all of them.

Longest distance in the current AFL South is New Norfolk to Lauderdale which would be 58kms vice-versa (Return trip 116kms)

In the old SFL when all 16 clubs played against each other in the same division, I think the furthest travel would have been New Norfolk to Geeveston (Home of Kermandie) which would have been 102kms between each ground. (Return trip 204kms)

Peanuts in travel terms really compared to the old TFL Statewide League where the distance between the Southernmost ground (Sandy Bay's Queenborough Oval) and Burnie's West Park Oval on the North-West coast was around 360km between each Stadium. (Return trip 720kms)

And they wondered why no one travelled to the Statewide games;)

Two seasons ago, when Rupertswood and Mt Lilydale were in the same division of the VAFA (which they will be again this year) - their roadtrip would have been fairly big by metro standards....

How far's Sunbury to the back of Lilydale?

Would it be as far as the hike from Peninsula to Willy CYMS?

St Johns OC (Dandenong) played Rupertswood and Werribee in D3 of the Amo's last year. Not quite Cerberus vs Brooklyn, but still a long way to travel to play football without being paid. In the country, Wonthaggi vs Maffra or Sale is a fair hike. Same league, Warrragul used to play Bairnsdale, bit rough if you were playing 3rds.

Used to travel from Newcastle to Muswellbrook and Singleton - that was a few hours.

In the Sydney second division I travelled from Manly to Wollongong and Penrith.

Yeah, Wonthaggi to Maffra would have to be at least 200km each way, if not a fair bit more.

I can't remember if Bairnsdale was still in the league when Wonthaggi joined. That would have been rough on the thirds.

A bit further than the distance between Mt Lilydale and Old Westbourne I think. I haven't played against Old Westbourne yet...when I do it will be the furthest I've ever driven without stopping.

When Yea were in the Kyabram League, the boys from Tallygaroopna (15kms north of Shepparton), went at least a 220k round trip to play Yea, even at Murch, it was a pain in the arse, but even now in the Picola League Tungamah to Deniliquin would be a fair hike, and the Central Goulburn's just as bad for Shepparton East when they have to play Thornton/Eildon, Alexandra etc.

But, Mansfield playing Echuca in the Goulburn Valley League would be around 160kms one way (380 round trip), and it's only 30k's less to go to Rochester.

But, when Parkside play Kinglake, in the DVFL, it's around 100ks round trip, which isn't bad but the road to get there is bloody ordinary in Winter.

When Panton Hill played Powelltown in the Yarra Valley Mountain District League, we would have travelled 80k's to get there, but when Kinglake were in the comp (1990-1995). add another 20-30k's to that.
