Crazy Sydney got rid of a coach that got the team to 2 of the past 3 grand finals, but Ken Hinkley survives 12 seasons with 0 grand final appearances as coach. Maybe Longmire should have tanked the team, looks better apparently missing grand finals, lol.

John resigned.

Didn’t realise Horse is staying on in some other capacity. That probably says they had more advanced internal discussions about the succession plan when the WCE job came up and Horse might have thought cleaner to just do it now and can be a bit of a backseat mentor for Cox in his first year. Good option I think. Swans always do these things well.

Just wish we did grandfinals well

For the stat tragics, would this be the first time in history that a coach that has won the minor premiership quits the same year?

Mick Malthouse's last year at Collingwood saw him lose a grand final after finishing on top. However, he didn't 'quit', it was his last year in charge as a succession plan generated by Eddie McGuire

Where from this opinion? Gutfeel?

no shit it's an opinion......... ergo i said "i think".........

do you think i am Tom Harley or something?

The legend of Ken Hinkley grows each day LoL

It's very complex legacy he leaves behind. You cannot fluke making 5 grand finals, just ask Ken Hinkley. But the most recent GF loss put a dark cloud over his career that could be excused up until then.

2012 was an epic win but the stats say they lose that one 8/10 times.

2014 was probably the best team Sydney has put out under Horse and the most hyped i've been for a grand final but they didn't show up at all and got embarrassed by a Hawks team that went in as heavy underdogs.

2016 they got a pass in the eyes of most due to perceived umpiring issues. I don't have an opinion on that but I feel the Dogs were the better side on the day, but Sydney hung around long enough that a win was within reach.

2022 they get a pass because the narrative was whoever turned up that day was getting smacked by Geelong. I look at 2008 as a prime example of how grand finals can produce any result on the day, but nonetheless they still get a pass for this.

2024 is the one that changed the narrative around Horse and Sydney and gave them no more excuses to lean on. They had an amazing win against GWS, comfortably handled Port and had health and momentum leading into the GF. Sydney fans will be the first to tell you their key position stocks were pretty weak and that may be true, but you don't make grand finals without a strong team on the park. Also factor in playing an interstate side who had played 2 very tough games in a row so the Vicbias excuse was also out the window. This one hurt them and broke them more then any other, and you could tell by the players post game interviews where they were genuinely lost for answers on what they could have done differently.

It will be interesting to hear him do an interview and speak on why he thinks Sydney were unable to show up for these games, because he seemed genuinely lost this time around and maybe that was a factor in his decision to move on.

I was of the view he should have moved on a few years ago but Sydney were just too talented and he was out of the Victorian spotlight that the issues they faced didn't get much attention. I think his legacy is one that will age better as the years go by, and making 5 grand finals will be seen as more of an achievement because the raw pain the fans felt on the day will slowly become just a memory.

The Swans were a consistent finals team under him, winning the flag of course in 2012.

The John Longmire era at the Swans will be defined by those four grand final defeats though. Three of which were lost in a dismal manner.

Yet Ken Hinkley cant make a grand final.

Ken Hinkley has more lives than a cat lol
