A genius plan that killed a potential dynasty.

Thanks Eddie
The forgotten thing about that is in 08/09 Malthouse had some health issues and they didn't think he could be full time coach much longer because of it. The fact that the transition blew up in their face before it even began really set the club back massively unfortunately.

It's very complex legacy he leaves behind. You cannot fluke making 5 grand finals, just ask Ken Hinkley. But the most recent GF loss put a dark cloud over his career that could be excused up until then.

2012 was an epic win but the stats say they lose that one 8/10 times.

2014 was probably the best team Sydney has put out under Horse and the most hyped i've been for a grand final but they didn't show up at all and got embarrassed by a Hawks team that went in as heavy underdogs.

2016 they got a pass in the eyes of most due to perceived umpiring issues. I don't have an opinion on that but I feel the Dogs were the better side on the day, but Sydney hung around long enough that a win was within reach.

2022 they get a pass because the narrative was whoever turned up that day was getting smacked by Geelong. I look at 2008 as a prime example of how grand finals can produce any result on the day, but nonetheless they still get a pass for this.

2024 is the one that changed the narrative around Horse and Sydney and gave them no more excuses to lean on. They had an amazing win against GWS, comfortably handled Port and had health and momentum leading into the GF. Sydney fans will be the first to tell you their key position stocks were pretty weak and that may be true, but you don't make grand finals without a strong team on the park. Also factor in playing an interstate side who had played 2 very tough games in a row so the Vicbias excuse was also out the window. This one hurt them and broke them more then any other, and you could tell by the players post game interviews where they were genuinely lost for answers on what they could have done differently.

It will be interesting to hear him do an interview and speak on why he thinks Sydney were unable to show up for these games, because he seemed genuinely lost this time around and maybe that was a factor in his decision to move on.

I was of the view he should have moved on a few years ago but Sydney were just too talented and he was out of the Victorian spotlight that the issues they faced didn't get much attention. I think his legacy is one that will age better as the years go by, and making 5 grand finals will be seen as more of an achievement because the raw pain the fans felt on the day will slowly become just a memory.
Getting a pass for losing grand finals.

That there is the mentality why those grand finals were lost.

Genuine question as I know it would need to be a lot but how successful would Dean Cox need to be as coach for by the end of his coaching career he is more remembered as a Swans legend than a West Coast legend?

won't get near it you'd have to be winning 2-3 Premierships, even then as a player he's probably more WCE.

Not to be a dick but Coxxy needs to get in shape fr, his girth and stature he’s probably at risk for heart disease

He doesn't look in bad shape to me

Good analysis mate.

Hope he wasn't axed or pushed out either actively or passively through a ridiculous handover plan. if so, then its a good call by him to avoid a Malthouse situation. If he believes he doesn't have it left in him, then this is also an awesome call by him.

Were it not for historic umpiring in 2016, he effectively won 2 out of 5 premierships, which is about par. Could have been a little better, could be much, much worse. And because he did it over such a long period of time, you can't argue that he has failed or fluked it.

The people on here crying 'If yOU aRent'T FirST uR LaSt!1" are (hopefully) teens with a bit of maturing and life experience to go through.

I have no love for the swans, but he did well and I hope he does well at either a new club, or out to stud.

Just get the feeling Chris Scott is going to rival Kevin Sheedy's 27 year run as coach of Essendon.

Don’t want to diss on club champion Luke Parker who wore his heart on his sleeve for years with us and one of my favourite players but I’m taking Horses side before Luke’s over a potential falling out, without knowing the full details. Sounds to me like Parker had a sook coz he couldn’t make the team for a few games after coming off injury and a dumbass suspension. Extremely poor attitude from a supposed “professional”. Why the **** would you get into the team what because your name is Luke Parker? You do realise the team was absolutely flying and undefeated in like 10+ games before you were given a game. Turn it up Parker I’m on Horses side. Horse, we will never find a better coach than you. Absolutely one of the best coaches to ever grace the game. People will talk about his Grand Final record to rebuttal this he was the ultimate players manager and professional.

He'll never not be a WC legend. 290 games, multiple accolades etc. Even if he decided to coach here and failed he would still be a club legend.

As far as coaching goes the most recent comparison is either Bomber Thompson, Adam Simpson or Simon Goodwin. I think of Chris Scott more as Geelong coach than Brisbane player but I would not have thought he was a Brisbane legend. Voss on the other hand could coach Carlton to a 3 peat and I would still think of him as Brisbane captain.
