Re: Meddling Owners

When you pay 10's of millions for a franchise to join an exclusive club, you're entitled to meddle, some just do it better than others and some have the best interest of the sport and community involved.

Ego is where the problem is

You make a good point that I agree with. If you own something, you have every right as an owner to meddle or run it how you want, differently or similar to other owners/franchises/companies.

It might not be a good way to do something, it might work for some teams and not others, etc etc....but some owners cannot be questioned about their passion, love, or treatment of staff. While others can. We as fans just follow teams and cant really do anything about things we're not happy with. But the hypocrisy is how in our own lives we own things, meddle in them, govern how things we own are to be managed or treated, etc etc, yet often stand there and berate NFL team owners for the same thing.

Re: Meddling Owners

The thing about all this to me is what I always say....we only hear about what the media has an agenda to point out. The media can so easily demonize or exaggerate certain owners/players/coaches/gms while seemingly protecting others, or those others just dont sell papers or provide a huge stream of user comment and site hits that other owners/players/coaches/gms do.

You would be correct there but the media is selective in pretty much everything that goes to print so we're only gonna hear what they want us to anyway.

I think people just enjoy giving it to Al and the Raiders because he's an easy target and he looks kinda like the Cryptkeeper from Tales From The Crypt. They know the general public will eat that shit up and it will be "sexier" than running a story on an equally boneheaded owner with a much lower public profile.

That's fair enough (in a humorous way: giving it to al, the cryptkeeper), until you start getting masses of people who just accept everything (or a lot) the media says as truth. That's a sign of and ailment of our times tho.

Don't tell the Cleveland community that. circa '96-'99 ;)

Re: LT on the Trading Block?

Some of the stuff in that article is rather cringe-worthy. Putting LT up on some sort of pedestal like he's a saint or something

Football is a business...anyone is trade-able no matter what they've done in the past. And quite frankly, I lost a lot of respect for LT over the last couple of years watching him throw hissy fits at his QB who, like him or not, has proven to be a great leader for that team. Played the AFC championship with a torn ACL while LT pouted on the sidelines.

I'll probably get trashed for what I wrote there but screw it. I'm not the only one who holds that opinion of LT, it's just that a lot of people are too scared to come out and admit it because he's been built up as the saint I mentioned earlier.

For his sake I'd like to see if he can silence the doubters. Maybe all he needs is an injury free season or maybe he is breaking down. Running backs have a rather short shelf life in the NFL as they take a constant beating and maybe all the years of pounding the rock are now catching up with LT.

Re: LT on the Trading Block?

just found this link about the Chargers apprentley putting LT on the Trading Block:confused:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jim_trotter/01/14/tomlinson/index.html

That's a very good business move by the Chargers. Think about it, the next few years is where they still have a REAL SHOT of making a run for the Supabah and LT has perhaps '1-2 years' to offer so while the 'value for him is still on the brink' , better to get a trade happening. RB's don't have a long career span and LT is one of the fortunate one's who has proven to be a stayer but why keep an aging veteran who really isn't the future of the Chargers on the roster when the more likelihood the next drafted RB will be the one.

Chargers LB Merriman Arrested

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4450962

Diego Chargers star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested Sunday and accused of choking and restraining his girlfriend, reality TV star Tila Tequila, as she tried to leave his suburban home.

Tequila, 27, signed a citizen's arrest warrant, charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Gary Steadman said.

Deputies responded about 3:45 a.m. to Merriman's house in Poway, north of San Diego, after a woman called to say she was choked by the player and thrown to the ground when she tried to leave, Sheriff's Department spokesman Jan Caldwell said at a news conference.

Re: Chargers LB Merriman arrested

This could be devastating for the Ninjas in Cutthroat

Re: Chargers LB Merriman arrested

Current suggestion of events from Merriman's side...

Merriman had to forcefully stop her leaving, as she was intoxicated and he didn't want her to drive.

Deputy later also said that she was intoxicated and had no severe injuries, was easily able to talk and had no obvious injuries.

There were a lot of people at his house, so should get enough witnesses.

Report: Nguyen was intoxicated, not seriously hurt
Posted by Mike Florio on September 6, 2009 5:05 PM ET
Information continues to surface regarding the arrest of Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman for allegedly committing battery and false imprisonment against Tila Tequila Nguyen, and we'll be posting new stuff of interest as it emerges.

This latest updates comes courtesy of the San Diego Union-Tribune, which reports that the injuries allegedly suffered by Nguyen were not serious, according to San Diego Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell.

"She was not seriously hurt," Caldwell said of Nguyen. "She was able to talk. She was able to walk. She was mobile. She did not have any serious injuries that our deputies saw."

Caldwell also said that Nguyen appeared to be intoxicated when the authorities arrived at the scene.

Also, several people were at Merriman's home at the time of the incident, and they have been questioned. Presumably, one of more of them witnessed whatever happened between Merriman and Nguyen.

Re: Chargers LB Merriman arrested

Sounds very similar to the Greg Inglis arrest for attempting to stop his Mrs from cutting herself.

So true Nappies.

Media beat up just to spice up a 'nothing really happened' story.. and what is strange is that Adelaide Crows recall Nathan 'woman basher' Bock after one week while in Melbourne, it's a criminal conspiracy. 2-3 week in the media spotlight until proven innocent. They're going abit troppo here with a mad monday prop & Fevola.. obviously the NFL season kick-off is far from the 'sporting capital of the world' ( greatest Melb myth ) from the minds of alleged 'sports' writers.

Merriman hasn't been suspended by NFL has he??

Re: Chargers LB Merriman arrested

Merriman hasn't been suspended by NFL has he??

He's listed as Probable on ESPN and it says the following:

"Merriman said that almost a dozen witnesses can back him up on his side of the sorry and added that Tequila isn't his girlfriend, as has been reported. Either way, while this has to be a distraction for him, so far no charges have been filed and Merriman will play in Monday's season opener"

Re: Chargers LB Merriman arrested

Would that stop him playing? He has plenty of money to settle out of court.

Yeah, just saying he is not totally off the hook yet. And different players deal with the pressure from lawsuits to various effect. Still, it is much better than a few in the slammer, that is for sure.

Chargers still trying unsuccessfully to trade Merriman.

Also, discussed on Ibabuzz...

The paper reported that the Chargers had three failed attempts at unloading Merriman last month.

The snag reportedly resulted from the Chargers insisting upon a first-round draft pick in exchange for the five-year veteran. The New Orleans Saints reportedly were one of the teams interested in acquiring Merriman.

Merriman still hasn’t signed the first- and third-round tender of $3.27 million that the Chargers offered him as a restricted free agent. The Union-Tribune said the Chargers still are working on moving Merriman.
