Re: Shawne Merriman may miss season :(

I have a feeling he may have played last week for contractual (read $$$) reasons.

Thats an interesting observation, its totally believable but very disturbing at the same time. If he'd suffered a career ending injury to his already injured knee in the first game it would have been tragic....

Re: San Diego Chargers Thread

What a crock of shit that decision was, lost the game for the Bolts. I know that Cutler shouldnt have been able to complete the 2 point conversion but seriously, San Diego would have gone close to icing the game had the right call been made.

On a positive note, Rivers looked really good and still shits all over Eli.

Cromartie needs to lose the ego and stop believing his own hype, LT's injury is a concern, with Turner gone and Hester M.I.A., it looks as if that could be our downfall.

But hope isnt lost, still won the division last year after having a poor start

Re: San Diego Chargers Thread

Heckuva job, Ed! Sorry...

The difference this year is that the Broncos now have an O. It's going to be a classic race for the title. Think you will win the return game.

Re: San Diego Chargers Thread

just wasnt the chargers day.........anything that could go wrong did. the chambers fumble that wasnt and the only reason it wasnt overturned was because the review equipment couldnt function......then there's cutler's fumble where the ref ended the play too soon.

and then cromartie was torn a new one by Marshall. a dirty day for him.

shanahan has to be given some credit somewhat...........for his sportsmanship? i guess that can be argued. go the PAT and give the Chargers a chance to win it in OT on foreign ground? or go for 2 where the stakes were higher? it was bold nonetheless. 99 times out of 100, a HC would go into OT.

this div isnt as difficult as the NFC EAST....bolts should pick up 4 easy wins. but the D just aint the same without the pressure Merriman exerts.

Meddling Owners

Got this from another site...

Funny how no one is commenting on how poorly run the Chargers are even though they have an owner who is just as bad as Al Davis. Winning does that...

Just a few years ago Eli Manning refused to go to San Diego because of their owners and GM. Less then a year after they were able to turn it around and start winning (even though they are still without a Super bowl) and have been the best team in the AFC West from 2004-2007. They turned around with a few good drafts and hiring a decent coach. Before anyone tries to give AJ Smith too much credit look at the facts.

-Smith let Brees walk away without any compensation and he is better then the QB they have now
-He replaced Marty with Norv, nuff said
-He has the meddling Spanos who are just like AL minus the Super Bowl rings and success
-Smith signed David Boston for 7 years $53 million which was a worse deal in 2003 then Walker's deal this year
-He hired Cottrell who was a personal favorite of his going back to the days in Buffalo and was recently fired because he was so bad.

Also see*

He went on to tell me that Alex Spanos is the cause of most of the problems for the franchise(big surprise huh?). He said that Spanos would always interfere with every little thing. He said he was that way from the start, pointing out the way the negotiations went with Junior Seau after he was drafted. He said the Spanoses always held a grudge against Junior from the way those negotiations went, because they felt Junior should have accepted less money than he was slotted for to play in his hometown. That had a lot to do with them treating Junior the way they did when they let him go. He said they always have to do their thngs their way, to drag things out in negotiations, just to make their point regardless of whether or not it hurts the team. He also described Spanos as not caring about the people that worked for them and hardly knew anybody's name that worked in the offices. He said this is the kind of stuff that gets around the league, and this is what the deal with Eli Manning was about.

He said the NFL would like two owners to sell their team, Spanos and the owner(s) of the Niners.

So based upon how the Chargers were able to have some success the last few years when they are not much different in how they are run shows that we can turn it around despite the doomsday attitude that has invaded the Raiders' fan base.

The thing about all this to me is what I always say....we only hear about what the media has an agenda to point out. The media can so easily demonize or exaggerate certain owners/players/coaches/gms while seemingly protecting others, or those others just dont sell papers or provide a huge stream of user comment and site hits that other owners/players/coaches/gms do.

Re: Meddling Owners

Trying a different angle in the never ending quest to defend incompetence gg?

Bottom line, teams that suck will always get kicked in the press but how much depends on how many care and the personalities involved. LT got his fair share of kicking after last year's playoffs. If you're of national interest, and you do something questionable on camera, it will be a national story regardless. Just ask Reggis Bush. Most people in NO don't get kicked in the national press. Bush, and now Shockey, have a national profile so everything they do gets national coverage, others on the team can do the same and it's not even reported outside NO.

Al gets a lot of press because of who he is, but also because of what he does. He can hardly complain for bad press after some of his recent hirings and firings and his quotes like the press conference he gave.

No doubt.Like the whole TEN team at 10-0, no buzz at all compared to last year. I even heard Mercury Morris raving about the titans , how their team is like theirs in 72, after slamming the patriots every step of the way. He was obviously jealous of the fan fare in hindsight.

But on the issue of the chargers, they have to be one of the biggest under performers in the NFL of late. They most def had their chances, but it seems to be getting harder for them and maybe that SB window is all but gone.LT only has so long and that defense aint the same without that 1 guy. I dont know where they are going to be next year but they would prob still be competitive in the West

this is a good point. this is more what i was trying to say than defending al davis per se. there are a lot of stories going around in the nfl if the media wanted to report on them more or make a hoopla about (like the titans).

Re: Meddling Owners

good comment too from where i got that post from...

yeah Ralph Wilson is also one of the worst of meddling (it was he who started Johnson over Flutie in the 1999 Wildcard game) it never works think you would learn from guys like Clint Merchison (the old cowboys owner in the seventies and eighties) who just sat on the sidelines and let Landry and Tex Schram run the team.

My dad is a cowboy fan and i keep telling him cause of Jerry Jones meddling ways the cowboys will be just as bad as us in aabout 10 to 15 years (when Jones hits his mid seventies)

Re: Meddling Owners

Unfortunately, almost 100% of people who know anything about the current days NFL would see that thread title and think, 'Al Davis'.
Schneider came across my mind :) :p

Re: Meddling Owners

See, i didnt know that the NFL has a very low opinion on the Yorks and Spanos. I always thought Bidwell would be up there in their eyes of owners who must go. This is what i meant, how the media can keep all that under wraps and beat up on someone else (whomever is not important), meanwhile the general NFL public just thinks the Chargers are well run and things are rosy there. I know the shit is gonna hit the Charger fan sometime soon tho. There are a lot of internal problems there brewing.

Meanwhile only a diehard Niner fan would be aware of the problems inside the Niner franchise. But i never knew the NFL was so desperate to get rid of them and Spanos. Yorks makes sense tho when i remember back to an article written about their incompetent management in trying to organize a new stadium deal.

Re: Meddling Owners

Great read, gg.
The cracks are really starting to appear now with the Chargers. Rivers is fairly inconsistent, O-Line is underperforming so LT isn't dominating. No Merrimen is killing their D. Can't wait for next thursday when we really take it to them.

It'll be better than doing Fook Mi and Fook Yu...doing the Broncos and Chargers back to back.

Re: Meddling Owners

When you pay 10's of millions for a franchise to join an exclusive club, you're entitled to meddle, some just do it better than others and some have the best interest of the sport and community involved.

Ego is where the problem is
