Losing your love/passion for the game

Difficult for me, as I dislike the AFL commission with all the changes from rules to MRP and then all the media stuff like the Essendon story, the over umpiring of the game and then commentary interviewing with umpires during the game, commentators almost deciding outcome of incidents and their over the top "oh he is in trouble, but our mate he will be okay" and stupid technology which should work, but isnt............but at the same time enjoying the greatest era of the Cats.

Is anyone else like me and just about done ? These last 6 months have really made me question why I follow the sport and if half the things you hear are true we follow a corrupt sport (I'm not only including the REDnBLACK in that statement) that we only thought existed overseas. If clubs are to pigheaded to admit guilt when caught I just don't see the point anymore.
You would appear to be biased as (a) your avatar lists no club that you support, and (b) your BF name suggests you were a Fitzroy supporter.

I am an avid and obsessed Cats supporter, and love football at the moment.

My main problem is that it is just a business now.

I used to love watching most of the games because each club had it's own culture and players had personalities.

Now there are just too many plastic clubs, the players are so bland and media trained, the commentary is terrible.

The media hype up star players and in particular indigenous star players way too much.

There is too big a gap between the top clubs and the bottom.

The game is too soft now, there aren't big hits in big games.

It'll only get worse when GC and GWS start dominating.

It would take a lot for me to lose passion for the Hawks.
But not football as I use to search for everything I could regarding football but now I prefer to live in my own ignorant bubble world as it is bliss.

The game has gone from something players did for fun, enjoyment or an escape from work.
To a job / career that is played at a workplace which needs OHS.

With the ever growing media coverage that always seems to looks for the scandal or next controversy, it gives the game the look of a sport that is played by spoiled selfish brats that are controlled by corrupt schemers.

I've lot a lot of passion, more so because of the AFL and not just the saints performances.

I've followed the NBA for 8 years, pretty seriously for 6 (league pass), the AFL is just a ramble in comparisons. From suspensions, to rule changes to umpires, the AFL just leaves me frustrated and angry.

As I get older all I realise the AFL is all about making money, at the expense of everything else.

Im the same but with the EPL holding more interest with me

Not sure if I'm losing my passion for the game (this is a good time to be a tiger supporter). But I'm definitely over the ASADA stuff and think the game as a product/spectacle, isn't as good as it used to be.

You know what i miss? The packed tram going to and from the game, no matter where it was. Going to the MCG and walking all away around the Southern Stand without some arseh*le asking me for a ticket or pass! I miss getting on a tram from Flemington to the city then catching a train and going out to Glen Waverley then catching a packed bus to AFL Park (crazy isn't it?) I miss the smell of the hot dog stand firing up at about half time in the reserves, i miss the reserves! I didn't care how long it took me to get to a game, i didn't really care if i ate a cold pie and paid an exorbitant price for it. I loved this game.
I went every week when we had an ordinary team and I did care when we got thumped over at Princes Park or Windy Hill, went home and grizzled to my mother that i will never follow the handbaggers again, pretty much nothing has changed, i still grizzle like a child when they lose today! Somehow though, this year has eaten away at my passion for it. I will always grizzle about losing because i hate it so much!
I lost girlfriends because of football, "it's either me or the football" well, happy to say the football won out and i'm right handed! I'm thinking of abstaining from everything next year!

First finals appearance in 12 years and to be honest, I couldn't care less. Sure, I'll watch every week and cheer for the Yellow and Black, but the fact that no one is actually concerned about Finals, even though it's less then a month away is a worry. Everyone is watching what happens to one particular club. This year has been shot and the damage has been done. I'll still watch Richmond play week in and out, but my interest in the sport has diminished significantly.

Now this is a significant post, if a Richmond supporter feels this way then the AFL are right to pursue Essendon on a charge of bring the game into disrepute. How many more people out there feel the same way? I'm drained of it all, nobody talks about the footy anymore and that is not good for the game.
The AFL are in the middle of the biggest crisis this game has ever known.

In fact - why live at all? Greed and corruption have been around forever. Maybe it's better now that you're wise to it - you can experience a greater range of emotion.

Essendon have done what no other team could achieve, damn near ruin a game in a Country. The Drug cheating in the NFL back in the 90's put that game back a decade before it recovered and I think Hird has done the same thing here the bastard.

You can blame Essendon for being drug cheats and bringing the game into disrepute (whatever that means) but not for bringing down the game. The seeds of the downfall of the sport were sewn long ago, and it's mainly due to the incessant changes to the rules which have made umpiring a farce every single week.

The Home and away season is a joke, over-regulated, over-officiated - far too long. The Drug scandal has diverted attention away from an otherwise horrible season - really, Hartlett getting two weeks on the weekend is why I'm falling out of love with the sport. Luckily, when finals comes along the umps seem to put the whistle away, the MRP takes their finger off the trigger and we can watch what is actually great about the sport. Remember last years GF? Great spectacle, well-umpired, perfect advertisement for the sport IMO.

Its not just that Geelong have been regular finalists in recent seasons, I'll always maintain an interest when it comes to finals but the regular season itself is worth hibernating through.

One of the biggest mistakes of the AFL administration was turning the VFA and now WAFL and SANFL into essentially reserve competitions.

Aussie rules needs legitimate 2nd tier competitions to watch. The VFL can be good to watch still, but the whole thing just feels like watching the 2nds, it's just not a real competition anymore. And I imagine the same things has been happening with the SANFL and WAFL.

Yes, that is the fear of SANFL "die-hards" who are still lamenting last week's decision to allow the two AFL clubs to field reserves teams. Wrong for so many reasons.

I can't see the AFL administration being concerned by this though, it saves them having to set up a genuine ressies comp, and it diminishes the relevance of the various state leagues, which are in essence competition for the AFL. The AFL has a tendency to look after the AFL, not the game of Australian Rules Footy.

I love genuine footy talk and analysis. It's addictive. I have always loved the pre game talk listening to the likes of Rex Hunt and Stan Alves right up until todays Brereton, Mooney, Schwarz etc. But, not so sure the game lives up to the talk anymore. More often than not I just listen to the radio calls rather than watch the games.(except Swans games). If I want to watch a game that sounded exciting I can watch it later in the week via the internet.
