My roller hockey team this season has been dominant because we added some big guys to the mozzie squad, now we have the players to create size mismatches with everyone.

I came here for a Jackson update and now I want to know what the frick Roller Hockey is. All I can picture is various sized men elbowing and shoving each other like in the movie Whip It. 🔥😎

Is that not roller derby?

Would roller hockey, be hockey, but on roller skates/blades?

If we had a choice of spending our current first and a F1 on anyone in the comp, it would have to be between Naughton, Jackson and Bolton. You pick one player and if any of the other two become available you won't be able to trade for them which is why you have to pick the biggest list need. The club would always be asking players about returning home so we just have to understand that Jackson is probably the only one that wants to.
Jackson shouldn't be in the same paragraph as Naughton and Bolton

Salary and picks aside, he's just an average footballer in general

It really does need to come out of the mouth of a man for it to be taken seriously.

"It could lead to the unusual sight of Darcy (as a 203cm ruck) and Jackson (as a 199cm midfielder) standing alongside each other in a centre bounce."

Get ready to watch "Darcy taps to Jackson, who taps it back to Darcy, who taps it back to Jackson down the field, who taps it to Darcy, who taps to Jackson, who taps it do Darcy, who taps it to Jackson, who taps it to Serong in the goal sqaure, GOALLLLLLLL!"

Haha. Both of them in the center bounce would be in interesting sight indeed. Justin has shown he can get a lot out of his players and allow them to play to their strengths (Aish, Acres, Logue in different roles, NoD, etc). I can almost guarantee they have a solid plan for Jacko. This is not the Freo of old where we trade someone in and hope they're the savior (i.e. Hogan). JL will have thought 5 strategic steps ahead on this one.

I love how the consensus is 50/50 on this one.

The only time it was overwhelmingly positive was the Jesse Hogan trade and that turned out crap.

Good signs people.
I was anti the Hogan trade but am positive on this one - for the reasonable price of something likes 1st & future 2nd?

Age profile & character are perfect.

LJ in this draft would go 1 …..essentially giving up 13 & a pick for that …no brainer

I think Darcy is a bit of a victim of getting rated against his best year, he was still a good ruckman and still had some terrific games (30+ coaches votes). Yes, wasn’t the same as last year where he was clunking everything but there’s only two names on that list who had better years as actual rucks IMO.

I think that's the case for everyone.

Walters, Fyfe, etc. If Brayshaw isn't in single figure odds for the brownlow next year people will be slagging him off.

i'd love to know what player actually would be worth the first 3 picks in a draft. 2015 fyfe? early pav? rowell 4 weeks into 2020? judd circa 2004?

2002 Judd after that game where he kicked 5 against the reigning premier Lions is the closest to where a club would say this guy is worth the top 3 picks. I can't think of anyone else.

I wish there was some way of just freezing yourself until the middle of October so could just forget about the endless speculation.

The lack of respect for Walters and Fyfe on this board by a lot of people is a bit of a disgrace.

Was so good to see Sonny shut them up a couple of weeks ago, no way we win that game without him. I expect Fyfe to come back next year and when fit do the same.

Jackson is an impossible match up as a midfielder, especially if he is offensively minded. Opposition clubs will need to put someone like Dangerfield or Zorko on him and neither pay any attention to the other. Good old head to head.

Walters is on $750k a year and has played 5 good games in 3 years. Give me a break. Banfield has had a better season that Walters.

Fyfe is on $1.2m a year and lost his spot in the midfield to a guy Gold Coast paid us to have. Fyfe isn’t unfit he just refuses to defend.

Walters elim final alone makes it a better year than Banfield and imma need a source he’s on 750k, that’s fantastic if he is because that opens an obscene amount of capspace next contract

You will only lose agility once you reach Fyfe levels of yuuuugeness. Jackson can work on his core and general strength without it impacting his agility.

Yes, Jackson looks super nimble because he's doing things like this against men-mountains, and things will look different when he's up against all these actual midfielders (who he routinely catches in tackles) but who is going to stop him charging out of a stoppage? F*cking Luke Shuey?

He'll only have to do it every now and then for fear of it happening to swing the magnets our way.

JLo seems to be the perfect coach for someone of Jackson's potentially unique skill set.....sounds like a coach with clear plans and individual player strategies...not wishy washy like Bevo at the WBD.

I think being back in WA, and in a settled environment, JLo will nurture the best out the kid....with a few more preseasons under his belt, Jackson will hopefully repay any large outlay financially by Freo in spades. The kid appears level headed, has a good family network, who will guide him in making sensible off field choices and of sound character....something the likes of Hogan and McCarthy at times lacked.

He better at 900k and Freo coughing up consecutive first rounders.

By the way McCarthy didn't lack a good family network as I played footy with his father at Melville albeit I was younger than him he was and is a good father.

What's with you and your constant negativity towards Banfield. 18 goals on limited game time not good. People here getting excited finding a forward that can kick a goal a game 😂

I agree and even if it is our first pick this year and next, by that maths, its still well worth it isn't it? I'd swap our first this year and next for this years #1 (I'd do that even for any of 2 to 5 as well) and think most would.

The idea of someone like LJ in the middle is not new either. Harvey tried it with Zac Clarke trying to capitalise on his athleticism in the early MH days. I liked the idea then and do now too. There's also the Richo on the wings period at Richmond . It worked well with Richo, it didn't work with Zac but I doubt it was due to it being a bad idea, it was more like a lack of toughness and ball finding nous from Zac which Jackson seems to have more lots of both.

And yes, Zac is a vastly different animal to Jackson so I am not comparing them, just saying the idea is not a unique one.

The main query I have with the notion of him or any similarly athletic big guy in the guts is that even the most athletic big guy won't match it with the most athletic small guy with the ball on the deck. Apologies to the poster who mentioned it earlier who I can't find now but the centre of gravity thing is real. LJ may get to the ball first or at the same time as a little clearance gun at a stoppage and then its the little guys body pushing against the arms of LJ just because of the physical dimensions of each. The body mass will shift the arms every time. This doesn't mean it won't work by any means but that will have to be something to consider. The potential negative impacts in that instance would likely be softened by having the smaller Serong's and the like around him or, even better, an Aish like tag on the clearance gun interfering with their movements and freeing up LJ a bit on those occasions. The biggest issues would come against an Oliver, Neale, Libba or pre-treatment Cunnington type but the reality is even guys their size get beaten by them so trying a different approach is well worth it. Its only likely to be really exposed at centre bounces when the numbers are lower around the stoppage. The worst case scenario in this case is him bolting in off a wing.

The obvious bonus is the quick dump kick out of a stoppage in our defensive or attacking zone and we have Jackson holding shape on the wing/centre against his mid oppo and obviously in this situation its no contest at all.

I'm keen to see how it goes...at the right price.

I'm not the one making outrageous claims like Banfield had a better year than Walters. He wasnt excited about Banfield, he's just trying to put the boot into Walters. it's his thing about our club legends

Snuff isn't alone that opinion. I will say the 18 goals you quote is a soft stat. He had one good game against Brissie where he got almost 25% of those in 1 half plus a brace against North in a game we wasted some potential (and in form at that stage) Sturt development and picked the plodder instead. He got another 4 throughout the year from taking the advantage from other peoples free kicks - he also missed 2 where he did that and missed when the free was in a very good spot. He became selfish as his place in the team bounced in and out and his defensive work - notionally what he's there for - is below average by any measure and the eye test.

No matter how good a bloke he is, I'm astonished we gave him 2 years. There's no other team coming after Banfield so year by year would've been fine for a guy who's handy depth that should be pushed down the rung on our list each year. Its highly possible in the last year of that deal he's not top 35 on our list anymore. I'm sure he's cheap so its not a big deal at all. He's not in my top 30 on the list now but I know that's seen as a harsh view around these parts and this isn't the thread for that chat anyway.
